The style is what we refer to as“beehive pitcher” as it does resemble a pitcher as much as an oil lamp, and the resemblance to a beehive is all too apparent. It seems that in the ancient world this oil lamp had a hairline crack. We never noticed it until we cleaned it, but if you look closely you can see what looks like a hairline cracked which has been filled in a repaired in an almost miraculous meticulousness which could only be attributed to fantastically talented miniature craftsmen. It seems what happened was that over the course of fifteen or sixteen centuries. The fine sand(almost talcum power fine sand) this was buried in slowly filled the hairline crack. You can see that the“fill” material is several shades lighter than the body of the lamp. Then as perhaps the ground occasionally became damp from rain, this talcum

I am o ffering in this auction a Byzantine oil lamp( which I acquired 15 years ago from a gallery which has been in business for many years and is still doing business in anci ent a rtifacts. They still offer lamps like this one. Which they are currently offering for a price more than double my asking price. There is considerable debate on several online sites. Taking both sides of the issue, some saying they've had pieces re-evaluated by experts who have verified authenticity and others who say experts have concluded that this gallery is definitely selling fakes. Some say their bronze pieces are more credible. Which is what this piece is. So I do not know. I bought it originally simply because I collect oil lamps and thought this one was neat and have enjoyed burning it but need now to downsize in retirement. The style of the oil lamp and the trademark beneath indicate that the lamp originally came to Syria as trade goods from what is present day Lebanon, part of Roman Syria’s Province of Phoenice. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays a very ornate sun burst pattern which was extremely popular in ancient Rome. Many bronze pendants are recovered done in a similar style, a stylized sunburst with orbs at the end of each ray. The rather intricate sunburst encircles the fill hole. There is a raised handle at the rear. The design present on the top, as can be seen, is even after the passage of almost 2,000 years, still quite sharp and distinct. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such an exceptionally well-preserved state. Oil was filled into the center hole. And a wick placed into the front hole and then set ablaze. You can see that there is a fair amount of soot residue around the wick hole, obviously this little lamp lit the interior of an ancient Roman household quite frequently. These two pieces are of authentic Byzantine origin. 8th- 10th centuries A.D. Both are cast bronze, including a long spouted guttos having a circular pattern on upper rim, one lug and thumb rest missing from rim. Deep green encrusted patina. Together with a spouted bowl type lamp, having a lug with a piercing suspension hanger. Deep black patina on second piece. This decorative bronze lamp filler has been worked into the form of a reclining animal, perhaps a turtle. The feet poking out from the corners, the head reduced to a mere suggestion, the shell rising to form the receptacle for the oil. An endearing piece.
