Superb Pair Chinese Blue& White Miniature Vases Guangxu Reign mark? This is a superb pair of Chinese blue and white lidded pots. Each vase is decorated with 2 panels showing flowers and insects. Although undoubtly a pair. Each of the 4 panels are fractionally different due to being hand painted. The panels are separated by a cell pattern, please see photographs. They are approximately 2.75 inches(7cm) tall. The bases carry a 6 character mark which is undoubtedly Qing Dynasty but I am not sure which Emporer. My best guess is Guangxu and if I am correct. IT'S MY ANNUAL NEW YEAR'S CLEAN-OUT-THE-ATTIC SALE! PLEASE EXCUSE CAMERA GLARE. I'm trying to clear things out before the attic falls in from the weight of all my"finds. This is a pretty piece. HISTORY of the mark: Kangxi reign mark(Chinese emperor between 1662-1722) Kangxi decided that with the hundreds of thousands of ceramics being made with his name on them. And likely hundreds being broken each day, it was not good luck to have his name on them, so he forbade the placing of his name on them. Thus his mark is relatively rare, but has been reproduced in the 19th& 20th centuries, and that's probably when this piece was produced. At some point it has been modified into a lamp base, probably quite a while ago. It's roughly 9 inches tall. The base bottom is about 3.25 inches in diameter. The diameter of the vase ... moreopening is just under 1.75 inches. Looks wonderful standing alone- or use as a vase or make a unique lamp! No chips, cracks or crazing. There is only the small round hole for the electric cord to come thru if you want to make a lamp, plus the smooth indented place on the bottom where the cord can come out and the vase/lamp will sit flat- the typical thing on most lamps. Here is a beautiful Chinese Famille Verte vase measuring 9& 3/4 inches high. I’m not sure if this vase is a period Kangxi vase or from the 1800s. In any case it is absolutely antique dating over 100 years old. It is entirely hand painted with a very delicate touch and good hand with overglaze enamels depicting birds and butterflies with several reserves. It has a Kangxi mark on the base in hand painted enameled black. She obtained her regent status upon the death of her husband, the Xianfeng Emperor, in 1861 and through Palace intrigue maintained it when her son died in 1873 and her grandson, the Guangxu Emperor ascended the Throne. The history of China from the last half of the 19th C through to the end of the Qing Dynasty traces her many actions and decisions which led to the end of Imperial China. A person who loved the arts. It is reputed, although not definitively shown, that Cixi designed a number of patterns of porcelain that were then manufactured at the Imperial kilns at Jingdezhen and ostensibly at a number of private kilns that could produce excellent wares.
