DESCRIPTION. From a private collection of early Chinese ceramics. A massive Song Dynasty(11th-13th century) Meiping of chicken drumstick shape. Beautifully covered in a subtle teadust glaze. It measures approximately 16.5"42cm high and is in very good condition considering its age. There is a shallow chip on the rim(picture 4) and a couple of shallow chips on the foot. On the main body are 2 small areas where the vase has kissed another in the kiln, both can be seen in pictures 5& 6. Picture 7 shows a comparable example on page 153 of"Song Ceramics" by Lu Yaw It weighs over 5kg when packed so will be expensive to post overseas. Possibly Southern Song Dynasty Mallet Shaped Vase Which Has Be en Cut Down This auction is for a pale celadon vase acquired by us from an art professor's estate collection which housed some fine Song and Y uan Dynasty Chinese ceramics. Unfortunately. A s you can see from the image of the rim. The vase appears to have been cut down, as the celadon glaze ends abruptly. Based upon the shape with sloping shoulder, it looks as though it may have been a mallet shaped"Kinuta, or horse's hoof style vase. It appears to be very old, possibly Southern Song Dynasty. Look at the images ... moreof the underside and foot rim closely. The glaze is a soft pale green with a hint of blue, and the vicinity of the chip suggests that the clay body may be quite light, reminiscent of Longquan celadon vessels. I am by no means an expert. And the vase is apparently incomplete, so it is being offered at a low start and you can judge for yourself what it may be. The vase stands 3 5/8 inches high and about 3 1/8 inches in diameter at the widest point. Ships at 2 pounds. Very carefully packed to minimize risk of damage during shipment. Longest part of top: 30.8 cm, widest part of top: 19.7 cm, longest part of base: 28 cm, widest part of base: 19 cm This porcelain pillow is in the shape of the'ju-i' symbol. High at the back and sloping down towards the front. The top of the pillow is slightly indented towards the center. It has a flat base on which a poem written by the QianLong Emperor in 1776 is inscribed. Both sides of the pillow have gourd-shaped holes, revealing a hollow inside and thick walls. The whole piece is covered in a thick ... moresky-blue glaze extending down to, but not quite reaching, the base, with glaze'tear-drops' near the bottom where the thick glaze has run during the firing process. In places where the glaze is thin on the corners and around the rim, the brown color of the ceramic body under the glaze can be seen. The surface of the glaze exhibits crackling, with purple-red spots appearing on the sky-blue glaze due to the addition of a copper-red glaze, adding a naturalistic aesthetic. There are also very clear examples of'palm eyes' often seen on Jun ware, which again reveal the color of the body under the glaze. This type of'ju-i' shaped pillow was already seen during the Sung dynasty(960-1279) with extant tri-color'san-tsai' pieces as well as white-glazed pieces incised with floral designs. The Qian long Emperor(r. 1736-1795) commented that this piece'appears to be from the Northern Song' but this is probably more from his liking of ancient things. In fact, when compared to examples dating from the Sung still extant today, this particular piece is simpler in design and decoration, and distinctly shows the corners of the pillow. Probably stemming from the Zhejiang province in the 13-15th century. Copied ever after and particularly popular in the early 20th century, then often in combination with brown unglazed molded or incised borders or applications. Ge makes together with Guan. Ding, Jun and Ru up the'Five Great Song ... moreWares' While each of these wares has its own distinctive characteristics the southern crackled wares of Guan and Ge have retained their mystery. While no unaminity of opinion have been reached it is generally thought that those wares with a single network of wide dark grey crackles are Guan. And those with a double crackle jinsi tiexian(gold thread and iron wire) Should be designated Ge. Ge literally means'big-brother' ware. Due to a legend telling of two brothers working in Longquan, one made the typical celadon style ceramics, while the elder made ge ware in his private kiln. Antique Chinese Song–Ming Dynasty Archaic Bronze Yi Pouring Vessel Vase. Description: Up for auction is a rare form of Bronze Yi. Modeled after Zhou and Shang Dynasty examples. The vessel is raised on a square base with a large bulbous body and a C-scroll chilong handle. The piece has two registers of geometric designs, with one prominently featuring the"star and whorl" pattern amongst an interlocking background of a greek key. The patina is a mottled black with areas of reddish brown and malachite. Rarely are Yi vessels found on a rectangular platform and not on legs. Given the shape and other features of the piece, it dates from the Song to Early Ming Dynasties. The Ru kiln site, which was discovered in 1950 by Chen Wanli, is located in Qingliangsi Village, Daying Township, 25 km west of the county seat of Baofeng County, Henan. Confirmation that this was indeed the remains of the Ru kiln came in 1987, during the first excavation of the site. In 2000, during the sixth excavation, the central porcelain-firing area was found. Ru porcelain is famed for the thinness and purity of its clay bodies, the fine workmanship in shaping, and the pure sky-blue color of its glaze. The latter was praised in the classic phrase, like the blue of the sky in a clearing amongst the clouds after rain. The glaze surface always featured very fine, complex crackelure that suggested fish scales or the fine cracks in ice. Moreover, an exquisite level of workmanship went into the vessels’ making. The glaze covered the whole surface, including the feet, and the support pins on which they were fired were as fine as sesame grains. Up for auction is a large estate collection of early Chinese ceramic examples. The lot has some interesting pieces that I believe would all day from the Ming dynasty period or possibly earlier. This amazing collection was so large I did not have time to list everything separately. Which is why I have loted these items up. The lot has some interesting examples including straw glaze, qingbai, and celadon glazed pieces. The larger celadon dish and celadon bowl do have old repairs. The other items in the lot show some wear and small imperfections but are overall in good condition with no cracks, or repairs. To give you an idea of the sizes the largest celadon dish measures 8 1/2 inches wide, and the straw-glazed handled jar measures 5 1/2 inches tall. This vase is a very interesting and highly unusual example. This vase has very strong provenance along with other examples from this collection also listed. The vase was accessioned(sold) by the Carnegie Museum of Fine Arts in Pittsburg to raise money for new construction projects. This vase was acquired by the museum in the year 1959 from the Important George H Taber Asian arts collection. The vase has George Taber’ s original collection inventory numbers in black. Along with the Museum inventory numbers in red. Mr.Taber is well noted as being a very knowledgeable high end collector of Asian arts in the earlier 1900’ s period. The vase is a fine and very interesting example done is a beautiful ding white glaze. This vase has very good provenance being purchased from Ralph Chait Galleries in New York around 60 years ago. Ralph Chait has been dealing in high-end Asian arts for upwards of 100 years and this gallery is considered one of the finest and most well respected galleries in the world. So you could not ask for better provenance. Ralph Chait dated this vase on the base label as being a Ming Dynasty example. In my opinion this dating is quite conservative and I believe there is a chance this vase could even date to the late Song to Yuan dynasty. The vase shows its age with some crazing to the glaze that could possibly be cleaned if one desired. Overall for its early age this vase is in very fine original condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. This vase has also been closely inspected under UV light, which reveals no damage or restorations of any kind throughout. Antique Chinese Song Dynasty Water Bottle Vase Iron splashed Brown Glaze
This auction is for an antique. Chinese Song Dynasty bottle or vase. It measures 6 1/2 inches tall. And just under 5 inches wide. The mouth measures at the lip to just over 2 inches. It is covered in a lovely brown glaze with areas of a lighter russet. And splashed here and there with a black iron glaze. This rare piece is perfect but for a tiny flea bite on the lip. And small glaze pop on the bulbous body originating in the kiln. Otherwise in perfect shape with no cracks. Repairs or other damage. Any questions. Or need for additional photos, please ask!
