This shape, with its broad shoulder and tapering foot is so attractive and would be a great asset to any serious collection! The Snuff bottle has a nice carved green jade or jadeite lid. And carved ox bone spoon. The Snuff Bottle has a few small original kiln imperfections to the base and shows some light wear throughout. But overall for its age the Snuff Bottle is in fine original condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The Snuff Bottle displays nicely measuring 2 inches wide, by 1 inch thick, and 2 ¼ inches tall not including the lid. Up for auction is this large Chinese vase that has been drilled to be a lamp. It has a Jiaqing mark on the bottom but I believe this piece is from the Republic Period. It is a large vase. Standing just over 13 inches in height. The opening is approximately 2 1/4 inches in diameter, the bottom is 4 7/8 inches in diameter and the weight is 4 pound 13.6 ounces. It is in excellent condition. With a surface chip to the large birds tail, a few small glaze skips which occurred during production and a tiny stress fracture to the bottom rim that also occurred during production(see closeup photos) It is a beautiful piece with lots of color. The Vase shows some very light wear throughout the gilding and enamel consummate with its age and has one small chip to the upper rim as you can see. ANTIQUE CHINESE GILT FAMILLE ROSE IMPERIAL 100 BAT VASE - GUANGXU MARK & PERIOD
We are very proud to offer a Guangxu Period 100 Bat Vase. The design of 100 bats amongst clouds was particularly popular during the Guangxu Reign. And as such can be found on vases and other vessels of varying forms. Most often, this design is painted in the famille rose color palette. Very rarely do we see the design painted in varying shades of coral as we do with this vase. The chosen decoration of bats points us towards a possible meaning of this vase. The Chinese word for"bat" is"fu" which happens to be a homophone for"prosperity and good fortune" The pattern can be interpreted as an auspicious wish of"vast happiness piled up to the sky" This vase comes to us from the collection of a prominent New England collector who acquired it from Marvin Sadik Fine Arts in the 1960s. Marvin Sadik eventually ... morebecame the curator of the National Portrait Gallery and hobnobbed with the likes of Martin Luther Ling and Lady Johnson. Similar vases have sold at major auction houses such as Christie's for upwards of $43.000 and are surely only going to become more valuable as genuine Chinese antiques become harder to buy. The vase measures 39 cm tall. The vase is in very good condition with wear to the enamel and gilding. This wear appears genuine is consistent with examples that have sold at Christie's. There is a single minor repaired chip to the upper part of the vase(shown in the photos) This chip is only on the exterior surface and is very shallow. The cups have a beautiful array of famille rose enamel colors throughout. The cups are superbly and thinly potted of pure white highly translucent porcelain. The cups have neatly hand written Guangxu six-character marks to the bases. The cups shows some light wear mainly to the upper gold gilt rim. But are overall in very fine original condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The Cups display beautifully measuring 2 5/8 inches tall, by 3 3/8 inches wide. There was originally three cups from this fine estate collection. I offered the single cup a few weeks ago and am now offering the last pair. It was a popular theme of the Qing and Ming Dynasties, and was intended as a wish for many descendants. The theme actually originated during the Zhou Dynasty when King Wen had 99 sons and adopted 1 more to make it 100. The exterior is brightly painted with a continuous. Animated depiction of young boys engaged in play, honoring one boy dressed as a first class scholar. Many of the boys are holding auspicious symbols such as peaches, fish, and bats.
