Antique 1920s BUTTOCKS BASKET TOLE PAINTED Vintage MARKET Farm EGG GATHERING
SIZE: approx 12" long. 8 1/2" wide, 10 1/4" high. Authentically OLD. WICKER? Buttocks-style Basket, with remains of Old TOLE PAINTING along all sides. I have had and seen others with similar painting. But I don't know if they were actually sold this way, or it was a fad of the era. Black. Green, Red and White paint, you can just BARELY make out that they were flowers. This one has original Double BENTWOOD Handles. Which are some kind of thick Reed, I believe. There are also a few ORIGINAL and OLD small IRON nails securing the 2 handles together, and they are DARKENED with age around the nail heads. CONDITION: Overall. Good. Structurally sound, MUCH age& use wear. I see 3 areas of noticeable GAP, where some wicker broke, but I ESTIMATE there are about 15-20 SMALL areas of either breakage, or very hard-to-notice breakage, ... moreall around. NO REALLY Big areas that would impair the basket's integrity. PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE PICTURES, zoom in, too, to see for yourself. Not in mint condition, of course, this is probably from the 1920s or early 30's, but is really is nice, and a Great Americana Primitive, to use or display. Primitive Antique Painted Buttocks Basket, Egg/Gathering Basket
Up for auction is an antique buttocks basket made fro either oak or hickory splints. The basket at one point was painted black and floral designs were added to both the body of the basket and the handle. The basket measures 15 inches wide. 13 inches deep and nearly 12 inches high to the top of the handle. Condition is fair, there are several breaks in the basket, especially on the bottom and on one side the wraps attaching the handle to the basket. I believe the handle to be either oak or hickory. The basket is 14.25 in. long. And 9.5 in. wide. It is 8 inches to the top of the handle.

Gorgeous split oak buttocks gathering basket with bent oak wood frame and handle. Bent wood handle has a 5" drop and continues around the base of the basket for reinforcing. Can you see(last image) the small. Handwritten letters on the bend wood, under the woven bent wood? This basket is signed, but I can't really tell what it says. The red trim paint is a bit worn and it looks like the sides were originally painted green. But only a slight bit of green remains on the sides. For sale: A Antique Miniature Small Buttocks Basket 1 3/4" Tall by 2" Wide Ohio found. I bought this basket in Morrow County close to where I live. The house was a very old turn of the century brick. This and another listing on ebay were found with tools. That is why they probably have light damage. This one stands about 1 3/4 inches tall by about 2 inches wide. It is hard to see but on two places you can see old string or thread like from when it was made to help hold it together. I guess. Primitive Antique Small Buttocks Basket Gathering 8.5" Old Patina Sturdy Weave
Primitive Antique Buttocks Basket with Wonderful Aged Patina This is an antique buttocks basket. That could have been used for gathering eggs. It has an aged patina, and also has some damage on the top edge. See photo. The oak strip that forms the handle goes all around the bottom of the basket. It actually overlaps and is nailed together on the side. There are 14 splints that curve around the sides and bottom. They look like they were hand cut. The bottom splints are about 1/2" wide at the widest part and taper to about 1/8" on the ends. There is a lot of detailed weaving in the basket. The curves and the craftsmanship make it beautiful and interesting. It is about 8 1/2" long. 7 3/4" wide and about 7 1/2" high to the top of the handle. The top of the basket nearly forms a true circle with a 7" diameter. 26 RIB SPLINT BUTTOCKS WOVEN BASKET WITH 8" X 9" OPENING
Estate find! 26 rib splint buttocks? woven gathering basket. I know nothing about baskets so I am unfamiliar with the type of wood that it is made of or where it was made. The handle knots are somewhat different than any I can find. However. This is a very sturdy, well made weave with no cracks or breaks. It has a coating of some sort over the outside, somewhat like a varnish. See pics. Slightly over one inch wide handle as well as the band around rim. End of band is away from the wrap but still in the weave. It may have been made that way. Again, see pics. Opening is approx. 8"x 9" and it is approx. 6" deep. The basket is in overall good condition. However there is some minor damage which can be seen in the last four photos. On one side top edge of the basket there are a few loose and or broken reeds which can be seen in the photo. Also on woven eyelets on of the end of each handle there is damage which can be seen in the photos. It took a very skilled person to hand weave this well crafted sturdy basket. The reeds have a natural blonde patina. The handle is twisted tree limbs which go all the way around and are woven into the basket. Please see photo's. Hard to find a good willow basket thats not native american. It most likely Pa Amish(Lancaster County) due to form and area where purchased. Very rare basket and form rarely seen outside of Pa, it a serious basket for the old-time collector who has it all. It measures 9" by 10" and stands 5 1/2" tall and 8 1/2" to top of handle. Very good condition considering its about 100 years old. Only flaw I see is a couple of rough spots as shown in photo#8. Bottom is dusty do not clean with water. Small nails reinforcing handle with two hand tied knots(one bottom one on side of handle) It very finely woven with 16 ribs& 15 per side 31 ribs total. Thats a lot of ribs for any basket but especially a Pa basket. I was told by one of the top middle atlantic basket and folk art collectors the hand tied knots where indicators of a moravian made basket( he owns 2,300 baskets) This item was purchased from the Bethelhem Leigh County Pa area, it's moravian influenced with skilled tight weaving and hand tied knots.
