AND OTHER THAN IT'S AGE WHAT REMAINS IS IN PRETTY NICE CONDITION. I SEE THE NAME SIR HENRY POTTINGER. I'M NOT SURE IF HE WAS THE MAP DESIGNER OR IT WAS HIS MAP. And there is the expected evidence of age, which may include toning especially at the page edges, foxing, handling marks, slight waviness of the paper and a degree of fragility. Most maps and engravings from this period were bound into books, rather than issued separately. That is the case with this series, and the plates were carefully bound in, using a method that minimises damage to folded plates/ maps. This is an 1871 engraved map of Ireland. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. This map is starting to split at the center seam. The sheet measures approx 44cm x 62cm with a horizontal centrefold as issued. Condition is good. Printed on heavy paper. The map image remains clean and bright. some light browning. A few small marks and light brown spots, but minor. The margins are grubbier with some light browning and some light handling grubbiness; one short tear in top margin and short split left end of centrefold, neither impacting the printed area. 1710 Homann (Petty & Visscher) Map IRELAND Superb Vignettes, Minutely Detailed!
Hiberniae Regnum 56.5 cm x 48 cm copperplate engraving. 60 cm x 51 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Nuremberg, circa 1710 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the classic map of Ireland published by the renowned Johann Baptist Homann(1663-1724) This first state of the plate was issued prior to Homann's appointment as Royal Geographer in 1715. A somewhat ironic title as although he was unsurpassed as a master engraver Homann was not really a true cartographer and his maps were typically close copies of earlier maps which he reworked with a distinctively bold engraving style, vivid hand colour, along with flamboyant cartouches and vignettes as is the case here. This elegantly composed map is a case in point- the cartography is a close copy of Nicolas Visscher's 1689 map which in turn was based on a map of Ireland by none ... moreother than(1623-1687) as part of a survey commissioned by Oliver Cromwell in the 1650s. As a very early imprint from the plate(later printings added Homann's publishing privilege and Imperial appointment to the title cartouche) this is a strong and dark impression that will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The large title cartouche presents"The harp that once through Tara's halls/ the soul of music shed" with assorted putti while Pan plays his flute at upper left. Note Homann's acknowledgement of both Petty and Visscher as sources in the title. A courtesy the German often neglected to include on his derivative maps. The two female figures are probably personifications of. aka Brigit) the pagan goddess and the other as: A secondary cartouche presents a mileage scale and legend with the Royal Arms with lion and unicorn. A farmer is shown at right with fisherman opposite- note skate. This. The North Sheet covers from the North coast of Donegal, down to just beyond Dublin. A later edition with the sea area left plain rather than the heavily patterned earlier version. Latin text verso. A crisp. Dark impression enhanced with original or early hand colouring. Some light toning overall and an isolated spot of browning can be seen on the original centre fold. Paint oxidisation has caused some cracking in one location(just left of Belfast) reinforced verso with archival tape and is barely visible from the face of the map. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married into the cartographically prominent Hondius family. Following his marriage he moved to Amsterdam where he worked as a book publisher. It was not until 1616 that Jansson produced his first maps, most of which were heavily influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time, Jansson's name also begins to appear on Hondius reissues of notable Mercator/Hondius atlases. Jansson's last major work was his issue of the 1646 full edition of Jansson's English Country Maps. Following Jansson's death in 1664 the company was taken over by Jansson's brother-in-law Waesberg. A series of smaller county maps were published in 1701 and later. No extensive survey was carried out as such but the previous Saxton& Kip(or Hole) maps were updated by whatever information could be found. Morden also produced a variety of other cartographic works including globes, geographical playing cards and large scale maps, notably of London.
