1755 Postlethwayte Three Panel Wall Map of South America
1755 Postlethwayte Three Panel Wall Map of South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: South America. Performed Under the Patronage of Louis Duke of Orleans First Prince of the Blood. Description: A curious and uncommon three panel 1755 wall map of South America by the English publisher M. Postlethwayte. A derivative of D'Anville's earlier map. Postlethwayte's map covers the entire continent from the Lesser Antilles and Panama to Cape Horn. Published in three separate panels, this map can be either joined as a single massive map as assembled, as above, in separate sections. D'Anville's map, and by extension this revision of that map by Bolton and Postlethwayte, represents a serious attempt to compile all of the accurate scientific knowledge of the South American continent available at the ... moretime. While cartographically very similar to D'Anville's map, Postlethwayte's work is a full re-engraving in which all text has been translated to English, a new cartouche of a rococo ethic incorporated, and Postlethwayte's own fascinating Anglo-centric commentary added. This primary cartographic development on this, the Postlethwayte variant of D'Anville's map is the incorporation of data associated with the expedition of Charles Marie de La Condamine- which being published in 1748 Postlethawyte postulates was not available to D'Anville. Our survey of this map beings with the coast which Spanish and Portuguese navigators had mapped with considerable accuracy as early as the late 16th century. This, like most early maps of the area, contrasts a detailed mapping of the coast with a speculative discussion of the interior, particularly Patagonia and the Amazon Basin. The map offers a fairly accurate discussion of both the east and west coasts with exceptional detail in the populated Andean regions of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador(Labeled Quito) and Peru. Cuzco, Lima, Quito, Valladolid, Arequipa, Trujillo and other important trading centers of the region a

1795 D'Anville Wall Map of South America
1795 D'Anville Wall Map of South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: A Map of South America containing Tierra-Firma. Guayana, New Granada, Amazonia, Brasil, Peru, Paraguay, Chaco, Tucuman, Chili and Patagonia from M. d'Anville with Several Imporvements and Additions, and The Newest Discoveries. Description: This is probably the most important large format wall map of South America produced in the 18th century. Largely based upon the earlier D'Anville map. This map has been enlarged and expanded by the English publishing house of Laurie and Whittle. Depicts the continent in full with an inset of the Falkland Islands. This map is unique in that it is a serious attempt to compile all of the accurate scientific knowledge of the South American continent available at the time. Offers a smorgasbord of ... morefactual, speculative, and historical detail. This extraordinary and highly decorative map bears up to almost endless perusal and volumes could be composed upon its content. The cartographer attempts to depict both known and unknown parts of the continent with actual data reported by both contemporary and historic travelers. In most cases it is extremely difficult to identify specific sources as much of the data is vague and uncertain. Offers a fairly accurate discussion of both the east and west coasts with exceptional detail in the populated Andean regions of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador(Labeled Quito) and Peru. Notes Cuzco, Lima, Quito, Valladolid, Arequipa, Trujillo and other important trading centers of the region. In Portuguese controlled Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, San Salvador and San Sebastian are noted. It is in the interior that this map becomes e
1814 Thomson Map of Northeastern South American: Venezuela, Guiana
1814 Thomson Map of Northeastern South American: Venezuela. Guiana WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Caraccas and Guiana. Description: This is John Thomson’s stunning. Highly detailed, and extremely interesting 1814 map of northeastern South America. Covers the modern day countries of Venezuela, British Guyana, French Guyana, Surinam and parts of Brazil. Thomson offers impressive detail throughout noting indigenous groups, missions, towns and cities, swamps, mountains, and river systems. Upper right hand quadrant features the title plate and two distance scales, one in British Miles and the other in Spanish Leagues. Cartographically speaking this is an often neglected part of the world- especially in the early 19th century. Though the coastlands had been well mapped early in the 16th century, the interior was rarely ... morepenetrated. The combination of mountainous terrain, daunting jungles, malaria, and unfriendly indigenous groups combine to make this area all but unexplorable- even today. Nonetheless, Thomson made a commendable attempt to piece together early conquistador accounts, explorer's journals, missionary records, and indigenous reports into a coherent mapping of the area. Probably the most interesting aspect of this map is Thomson’s treatment of the apocryphal Lake Parima, located dead center. Lake Parima was first identified by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 16th century- though he admittedly never saw the lake himself. Raleigh associated the lake with indigenous legends of Manoa and the supposed site of El Dorado. Many early maps actually show El Dorado" on the shores of Lake Parima, though Thomson curiously does not. However, his rendition of Lake Parima is vastly larger than most previous examples from the late 18th century- even those by other English cartographers such as Laurie and Whittle. The reality of Lake Parima and the Manoa is based upon Raleigh's misinterpretation of local trade networks. The Manoas were a river trading tribe based in the Amazon. Each year du

I received one negative feedback score from a buyer that purchased a dress without properly looking at the size listed. I posted a UK size 8 and she thought she purchased a US size 8. The buyer opened case against me but eBay ruled in my favour. This listing is for a handcrafted map of Africa from 1590 A.D made by a Kenyan artist. I am unsure what the material is.Great gift for christmas forthe office or even home decor. Please check out all my auctions for more great buys.
1782 Janvier Map of Africa
1782 Janvier Map of Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: L'Afrique divisee en ses Principaux Etats. Description: A fine example of Jean Janvier's 1782 map of Africa. Janvier's map covers the entire continent of Africa as well as the island of Madagascar and adjacent parts of Europe. Arabia, and Persia. Like most 18th century maps of Africa, the present example is rife with speculation regarding the largely unexplored interior. What little was known of Africa, however, Janvier incorporates here in an impressive compilation of the most up to date reports from colonial, missionary, and exploratory entradas into the interior of the continent. Thus well mapped parts of the continent are limited to the Mediterranean Coast, Morocco, the Senegambia, the Congo, South Africa, the Kingdom of Monomatapa, Abyssinia, ... moreand Egypt. Morocco, Egypt, and the southern Mediterranean Coast(Barbary) were well known to Europeans since antiquity and Janvier's accurate mapping of these regions reflects continual contact. Further south the colonial enclaves along the Niger River(Senegal and Gambia) the Congo River, and South Africa reflect considerable detail associated with European penetration by traders and missionaries. The land of Monomopota around the Zambezi River was explored early in the 16th century by the Portuguese in hopes that the legendary gold mines supposedly found there would counterbalance the wealth flowing into Spain from the New Word. Unfortunately these mines, often associated with the Biblical kingdom of Ophir, were mostly tapped out by the 15th century. Abyssinia(modern day Ethiopia) was mapped in detail by early Italian missionaries and of considerable interest to Europeans first, because it was(and is) predominantly Christian; second, because it was a powerful well-organized and unified kingdom; and third because the sources of the Blue Nile were to be found here. The remainder of the continent remained largely speculative though Janvier rarely lets his imagination get
1795 Vaugondy Map of Africa
1795 Vaugondy Map of Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Afrique divisee en ses principaux Empires et Royaumes. Description: An important an unusual c. 1795 folding pocket map of Africa by Robert de Vaugondy. Vaugondy frist issued this map in 1749 and it went through at least seven states with editions appearing as late as 1810. Issued on the cusp of Europe’s great wave of exploration into the interior of Africa. Vaugondy loosely based this map on the earlier work of De L’Isle and Sanson with updates to comply with the most recent cartographic information coming into Paris. The map offers impressive detail of the largely unexplored interior, featuring the names of various tribal groups and indigenous empires throughout, while at the same time, studiously avoiding presumption regarding the general geography ... moreof the interior. The well mapped coastline is consistent with earlier maps of the region, though the projection has been slightly corrected. The known lands, most explored by missionaries and early colonists, of Mediterranean Africa, Egypt, Abyssinia, Morocco, the Niger Delta, and South Africa and the Congo, are mapped according to convention with a few minor updates. The interior is largely blank of geographical features. Vaugondy abandons the tradition of filling the blanks with speculative mappings of the White Nile, the Niger, and the Mountains of the Moon. Rather he focuses on known missionary reports containing both first hand evidence of the interior and second hand information gleaned from the African indigeni. These include an embryonic mapping of Lake Malawi, with the note(in translation) that reads, It is claimed that his lake extends far to the north. Thus are Europeans beginning to understand the Rift Valley and anticipate some of the greater lakes soon to be discovered further north, including Nyasa and Victoria. To the right of the map proper a table offers a breakdown of the religious, people, islands, and cultures of Africa. As stated, this map went through

1836 Malte-Brun Map of Africa
1836 Malte-Brun Map of Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Afrique. Description: This is a fascinating example of Conrad Malte-Brun's 1836 map of Africa. The map covers the entire continent from the Mediterranean Sea to Cape Colony and from the Atlantic Ocean to Madagascar and the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean. An interesting map issued just as most of the Earth's non-Polar shores were finally explored. Inland though. Much remained unknown. The present map exhibits various speculations regarding the unexplored interior of Africa. The course of the White Nile shown here is speculative at a best, neither Mt. Kenya nor Mt. Kilimanjaro are shown, the apocryphal Mountains of the Moon stretch across the continent, and what may be some sort of Proto-Lake Victoria is identified here as Lac Ouiffua. ... moreAt the time this map was made, the slave trade, thriving since the 5th century was rapidly diminishing due to decreased demand for slaves in the New World, the British outlawing of slavery in 1808, and subsequent diplomatic efforts including treaties with over 50 African rulers outlawing the practice. Many African economies adapted by shifting to the export of mineral and agricultural resources, which led to the European scramble for territory, occupying most of the continent by the end of the 19th century. Europe's colonial interests in Africa haphazardly carved up the continent into unnatural territories, often forcing historic enemies into close proximity and leading to social problems that remain to this day. Various important rivers, islands, lakes, mountains, cities and other topographical details are noted with relief shown by hachures. The map is color coded according to countries and territories. This map was issued as plate no. 56 in Conrad Malte-Brun's 1837 Atlas Complet du Precis de la Geographie Universelle. Size: Printed area measures 13.5 inches high by 17 inches wide. Depicts what is today known as the Barbary Coast around 190 BC. The area contains the city of Carthage, leveled by Rome at the end of the Third Punic war. 1690 Coronelli Map of Ethiopia, Abyssinia, and the Source of the Blue Nile
1690 Coronelli Map of Ethiopia. Abyssinia, and the Source of the Blue Nile WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Abissinia. Doue sono le Fonti del Nilo descritta secondo le relationi de P.P. Mendez, Almeida, Pais, Lobo, e Lodulfo del P. M. Coronelli M.C. Cosmografo della Seren. Rep. di Ventia… Description: This is Coronelli's important 1690 map of Ethiopia(Abyssinia) showing the source of the Blue Nile. This map. Focusing on Lake Tana(Tzana Dembea) covers the Ethiopian highlands from Derbeta on the Red Sea south as far as the tribal kingdoms of Sugame, Bahargamo and Gumar, all of which are located in modern southern Ethiopia. Europeans, Coronelli included, had a great interest in this region not only because of common conjecture regarding the source of the Nile, but also as a potential site of the Kingdom of Prester ... moreJohn. Though often underappreciated by historians, this is a highly significant map in the development of African cartography and, from the early 18th century on, most cartographers followed its example with regard to this important region- one of the few parts of sub-Saharan Africa to be accurately represented on maps prior to the late 19th century. Coronelli claims that this is the first map to accurately depict the sources of the Nile and, at least as regards the Blue Nile, we see no reason to dispute his claim. The cartography here is based upon the travels of Portuguese Jesuits Manuel de Almeida, Affonso Mendez, Pedro Páez, and Jerónimo Lobo, who traveled throughout Abyssinia in the mid 16th century. Coronelli correctly recognizes the importance of Lake Tana(Tzana Dembea) as well as the curious turn in the river that actually causes the Blue Nile to start it course as a southerly flowing river. The actual fonts of the Nile itself appear to the southwest of Lake Tana. The Falls of the Blue Nile, now a popular tourist destination in Ethiopia, are noted just south of the Lake. In the upper right quadrant Coronelli contrasts his perspective on the region with the

In Gojam’s sunny realm, Pure welling out, he[the Nile] through the lucid lake Of fair Dambea rolls his infant stream. Thomson, James: The Seasons: Summer” 805–8 A stunning and surprisingly accurate 1719 Map of the Source of the Nile by Alain Manesson Mallet. Details what is today the Gojjam(Goyam on map) district of Ethiopia around Lake Tana( here Bed Lac or Dambea) Accurately describes the course of the Blue Nile as it flows southward from the southeastern corner of Lake Tana before hooking around to the west and flowing northwards toward its convergence with the White Nile and, ultimately, the Mediterranean. Names numerous villages and Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries ... morethroughout. Shows mountains in profile, however, as this is not a particularly mountainous region, we can assume that Mallet must have added these merely as decorative place holders. Mallet no doubt drew this map based on the accounts of early missionaries who were active in the area throughout the late 17th century. Prepared as figure XCVI for the 1719 edition of A. Mallet’s seminal Description de l' Univers which was, itself, the largest and most comprehensive work of its kind issued to date. Size: Printed area measures 7 inches high by 4.5 inches wide. 1750 Bossuet Map of Ancient Egypt WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Carte de L'Ancienne Egypte et des Pais d'alentour. Suivant cette Histoire. Description: This is a fascinating and beautifully engraved example of Jacques Benigne Bossuet's c. 1750 map of ancient Egypt. Centered on the Nile River Delta. The map covers Egypt and part of Arabia and the Red Sea. Several ancient towns and oases along the Nile are noted. Possibly this map's most interesting aspect is its presentation of the ancient Lake Moeris(le Lac Moeris) now just a small lake called Birket Qarun and the legendary'Labyrinth' near modern day Hawara. The lost Labyrinth was described by many classical authors including Herodotus, Strabo, Diodorus and Pliny. A sprawling megalithic complex designed by Imandes for the Pharoh Amenemhet ... moreIII, the Labrynth is believed to have contained thousands of rooms filled with hieroglyphs and ancient Egyptian sculptures. Herodotus wrote about it in the fifth century B.C. Furthermore, they resolved to leave a memorial of themselves in common, and in pursuance of this resolve they made a labyrinth, a little above Lake Moeris, and situated near what is called the City of the Crocodiles. I saw it myself and it is indeed a wonder past words; for if one were to collect together all of the buildings of the Greeks and their most striking works of architecture, they would all clearly be shown to have cost less labor and money than this labyrinth. Yet the temple at Ephesus and that in Samos are surely remarkable. The pyramids, too, were greater than words can tell, and each of them is the equivalent of many of the great works of the Greeks; but the labyrinth surpasses the pyramids also. It has 12 roofed courts, with doors facing one another, 6 to the north and 6 to the south and in a continuous line. There are double sets of chambers in it, some underground and some above, and their number is 3,000; there are 1,500 of each. We ourselves saw the aboveground chambers, for we went t

1790 James Bruce Map of Ethiopia and the Source of the Nile
1790 James Bruce Map of Ethiopia and the Source of the Nile WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: To My Worthy and Learned Friend the Honourable Daines Barrington This Plan of two Attempts to Arrive at the Source of the Nile is dedicated by his most Obliged and faithful Humble Servant James Bruce. Description: This is a fascinating. Significant, beautifully engraved, intricately detailed 1790 map of Ethiopia(Abyssinia) and the source of the Blue Nile by the Scottish adventurer James Bruce. Centered on Lake Tana(Tzana) this map covers from the Ethiopian capital at Gondar south as far as the Saccala District and the Geesh Abay(Geesh Springs) The map plots Bruce’s travels in search of the source of the Blue Nile starting from the Ethiopian capital of Gondar. Local guides led Bruce southwards around Lake Tana(Tzana) and ... moreeventually down the Abay River to Gish Abay, the source of the Blue Nile. Bruce claimed to have discovered the Gish Abay springs, but in a fact that he was well aware of, was merely retracing the steps of the Jesuit missionaries Pedro Paez and Jeronimo Lobo. Bruce then traveled northwards, following the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile in Nubia, before following an overland caravan route to Syene and thence back into Egypt and Europe. Bruce’s exploits were ridiculed in his day, but much of the information he collected worked its way into the cartographic corpus, appearing in later maps of the region by Cary, Thomson, Pinkerton, and others. Cartographically this map makes a number of advances and well as promotes a number of misconceptions associated with Bruce’s theories. The course of the Blue Nile as well as much of the Abyssinian interior is meticulously mapped and, by and large, accurate. Many claim that this map and Bruce’s explorations in Abyssinia also contain a subtext relating to his Masonic and Templar associations. Bruce’s ancestor, the Scottish King Robert the Bruce, harbored many of the Knights Templar during their prosecution in the 14th cent

John Lord Bishop of Carlisle This Map Shewing the Tract of Solomons Fleet in thir three Years Voyage from the Elantic Gulf to Ophir and Tarshish the Necessity of Empolying in it that space of time is Dedicated by his Most Obedient Servent James Bruce. Description: This is a fascinating. Significant, beautifully engraved, intricately detailed 1813 map of eastern Africa, covering from the Mediterranean to the Cape of Good Hope. The map serves to highlight Bruce's speculations, which follow those of Montesquieu, regarding the Biblical ports of Ophir and Tarshish, commonly known as the Lost Mines of King Solomon, from which King Solomon supposedly acquired the massive quantities of ... moregold required to construct the Temple of Jerusalem. Bruce, not illogically, places Ophir in the region of Sofala, near modern day Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Tarshish he sets further north along the Africa Coast near modern day Malindi, Kenya. This region of Sofala(Mozambique/ Zimbabwe) did indeed have rich gold and silver deposits in antiquity and in the 16th century was colonized by the Portuguese with the hope of establishing an African gold source to compete with the Spanish discoveries in the Americas. Alas for the Portuguese, by this time the mines of Zimbabwe had long since been depleted. Bruce bases his theories both on Biblical and related literature as well as on his own observations of Indian Ocean weather patterns, particularly the Monsoons. Many claim that this map and Bruce’s explorations in Abyssinia contain a subtext relating to his Masonic and Templar associations. Bruce’s ancestor, the Scottish King Robert the Bruce, harbored many of the Knights Templar during their prosecution in the 14th century. Some believe that Bruce inherited secret knowledge that sent him to Ethiopia in search of Templar artifacts including, among other things, the Ark of the Covenant. Bruc

The map features depth soundings at the mouth of the river as well as copiousnotes throughout illustrating indigenous villages, geological features, and the character of the River. Two depth profiles appear in the lower right quadrant. A large inset in the upper left quadrant details the coast of Africa from Cape Lopez to the mouth of the Congo- a region that has been incorrectly charted until the appearance of the present map. ... moreThis map was based on Tuckey's own sketch, surveyed by Lewis Fitzmaurice, engraved in London by John Walker, and published by John Murray. James Kingston Tuckey's important 1816 map of the Congo River(River Zaire) represents the first scientific attempt to map the interior of Central Africa and the Congo. The Tuckey expedition followed immediately upon the close of the Napoleonic Wars. This was not by chance. Soldiers and naval vessels, no longer needed for war, were reassigned to exploratory missions around the globe. At the same time, the arrival of the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century transformed the means and style of production. The Industrial Revolution had wide reaching global implications. For Africa this meant a reduced reliance on slaves, an institution that was becoming ever more unpopular on the continent, and an increased focus on raw materials. European powers were no longer content to trade slaves at coastal enclaves in West Africa; instead they began to view Africa in terms of territorial conquest, mineral resources, forestry, and animal products. To exploit the presumed wealth of Africa, European powers needed to better understand the C

1835 Hall Map of Egypt
1835 Hall Map of Egypt WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Egypt. Description: This is a beautiful map of Egypt from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It depicts Egypt. Centered on the Nile River from its delta on the Mediterranean south as far as the Desert of Chebba and the Port of Abyssinia and from El-Wah or Great Oases east as far as Naaman Islands. Egypt is here divided in to Mamluk provinces of Bahari(Lower Egypt) Vostani(Middle Egypt) and Said(Lower Egypt) Hall's map notes numerous cities and villages along the river as well as various ancient Egyptian ruins including the Pyramids of Giza and the'Sepulchers of the Kings of Thebes' Valley of the Dead) It also offers considerable detail regarding the Valley of the Lakes of Natron with is numerous important Egyptian Coptic ... moremonasteries. Various battles between the Ottoman and French forces under Napoleon are noted, including El Arish 1799, Ghizeh 1798, and Aboukir 1798, among others. Near Suez, Hall identifies the Ancient Canal which would soon give way to a more modern variant. Numerous caravan routes are mapped throughout and ancient place names are written in parentheses. Hall prepared that map in the declining days of the Ottoman Empire. After the conquest of Palestine by Muhammad Ali’s Egypt in 1832, British intervention returned control of Palestine to the Ottoman rulers in 1840. In Egypt, following the expulsion of the Napoleonic forces by the Ottoman Mamluk Turks, Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman viceroy of Egypt, established the Mamluk dynasty that would rule Egypt until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. Between 1820 and 1833, Ali annexed northern Sudan, Syria and parts of Arabia into the Mamluk Empire. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings,
1835 Hall Map of Northern Africa
1835 Hall Map of Northern Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Northern Africa. Description: This is a beautiful map of northern Africa from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It covers the Maghreb or Barbary Coast and the western Mediterranean Coast of Africa from Morocco to Tripoli. Including modern day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. The map focuses on Morocco and the Mediterranean regions of Fez, Algeria, Tunisia and Tripoli and the ancient Greek and later Roman, Byzantine colony of Barca. It also shows the inland oasis Kingdom of Fezzan. Though mostly desert, 19th century Fezzan had numerous oases and supported a relatively large population. This desert kingdom was a critical stopping point for trade caravans crossing the Sahara since antiquity. This important still active caravan ... moreroute, with its string of Oases, is mapped out in some detail. The Tuat, a vast desert region, marked with numerous oases is also noted. The desert area is largely unmapped, simply identified as'Blaid-el-Jerid, Country of Dates' The map offers various interesting annotations, such as'Point of assemblage for the caravans that are to proceed to Timbuctoo' at Tatta and'Station for the Timbuctoo and Mecca caravans' at Fighig. Parts of North Africa, at the time were under the influence of the rapidly declining Ottoman Empire. The region would go on to be colonized by France, United Kingdom, Spain and Italy during the next century. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ
