A fine antique map from The Times Survey Atlas of the World BRITISH ISLES VEGETATION& CLIMATE Provenance The Times Survey Atlas and Gazetteer of the World by J.G. Bartholomew Published London: The Times Printing House. 1922. All the maps we are selling come from the same original 1922 atlas. Cartographer J.G. Bartholomew. Cartographer to the King. Size/ Format 22.5" x 17.5" 57.6 cm x 44.8 cm) One fold in the centre. The margins are clean and range form 0.5" to 0.8" 1-2 cm) on all sides. These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Which means they can easily be removed as a single sheet with a fold in the centre. Condition Very good. The colors are bright and fresh. The maps themselves. And the margins, are very clean. There are no tears, stains, discolorations or soiling whatsoever. The atlas from which these ... moremaps were removed did NOT spend its life at a public library. It was part of a private collection and was treated very well. Remarks The publication of the Times Survey Atlas in 1922 was the culmination of six years of painstaking work and. With the combination of political and the physical colour range from dark green to dark brown to indicate elevation, it marked the beginning of the age of'modern cartography. It surpassed any atlas before it in terms of scope(112 double-page folio map) and accuracy. Many of the maps published in this atlas were used in other atlases in many countries as recently as the 1970s. These maps will look great framed and hung individually or, on a large wall, in groups. 1739 Buffier Map- Carte de la Grande Bretagne Claude Buffier introduced his fine little geography book. Geographie Universelle' in 1715, embellished with an attractive set of world maps. It sold well and after a number of editions the maps were changed. This attractive map of the British Isles comes from a 1739 edition of'Geographie Universelle' The map notes the counties. The Irish Provinces, the major towns and cities, and the map has a title cartouche. The map measures 5.5" by 7" with several folds(as issued) Has later outline hand colouring, and is in good condition except a strip of paper has been added to the lower left margin where that margin was very narrow, and there is some light ink smudging on the left edge of the map. I believe this map was published in a volume by Cassell& Co. The image itself measures approx 10.5cm x 14.5cm on a sheet approx 13.5cm x 17.5cm. Nicely hand coloured. Text above. Below and on verso. Very sharp and fresh image. Evenly toned within the mounting box based on previous framing. Horizontal crease bottom right. Large Original Map proposed Panama Canal Route Caledonia Bay - Rio Sabana 1904
Up for sale is a spectacular Large Original Map of the proposed Panama Canal Route Caledonia Bay- Rio Sabana. It was made as one of the proposed Panama Canal Routes published circa 1904 as part of The Report of The Isthmian Canal Commission Report. This is plate number 5 from that report. It is a beautiful color lithograph that measures approximately 35 x 45 inches. This particular map shows the possible route from Caledonia Bay to Rio Sabana through Columbia. A great original map of historical significance that would look very nice framed. The piece is in generally good condition with the biggest issue being the plan was folded(as published) and has remained folded for the past one hundred plus years. Therefore there are some small rips along the fold and the map is delicate. One needs to be very careful when opening it so as not to cause ... moremore rips along the creases. Pretty much I recommend opening it once and then getting it framed. There is light browning around the edges and a couple of creases at the edges but all in all this is a very nice piece outside of the rips along the fold which are fairly minor but certainly present in several places. This piece was part of a large set of plates published by the Canal Commission. This set includes beautiful maps of local areas. World wide trade routs, color views of parts of the Central American Coastline and diagrams show proposed routes of the canal or technical specifications. Most of the maps and diagrams were very large and all are very rare. They are lithographed by a couple companies and all of them printed by the Government Printing Office. Dates vary and the printing was either 1904 or 1906. Please see my other sales if interested in this material as there were 86 of these large prints and I have them up for sale.
