The map shows all of the state's counties; county seat towns; major cities and many small towns& villages; rivers& streams; and topographic detail. The map was produced by the“Rand, McNally& Co. Engr’s. Chicago” in 1879 and came out of an Encyclopedia or Atlas. It is not a reproduction of an old map but is the original printing made for that publication. The map itself measures about 10” by 8-1/8” on paper that is about 11-1/2” by 8-5/8” It is in very good condition for a 134 year old map, with the paper being tan in color at the top and edges, but the rest looks close to its original paper stock color. This old map would make a great addition to any Vintage/Antique American Map collection. This is a large 1879 Railroad Map of Washington. It measures 15 X 11 inches. Map was taken from the Rand McNally New Business Atlas which is very rare and highly sought after. This map is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. It may have a few minor handling flaws as to be expected in a map this age and large. Please see scan. The Rand McNally Business Atlas first printed in 1876. Was still in transition in 1881. Rand McNally was experimenting with different methods so that shipping clerks would find the railroads on the maps with speed and exactness. Weimar 1804 We are pleased to offer this very scarce example of a map of Africa compiled for the Weimar Geographische Institut by the german geologist and cartographer Johann Christoph Matthias Reinecke(1768-1818) for the grand"Reichsausgabe" Imperial Edition) of the superb Allgemeine Hand-Atlas published by the Institute in 1804. Surprisingly scarce and not recorded by Norwich. The map is notable for what it reveals about European knowledge of the continent in the early years of the 19th century as well as the lack thereof. Handsomely engraved and providing many fascinating notations, the map will make an important addition to any serious collection of Africa maps. The cartouche informs us that the map is based on"the latest ... moreastronomical observations" and is in fact the third revision to the plate: Turning to the map itself. We find the Lakes Region completely unknown with just a tentative outline of part of Lake Malawi. Someone has added a manuscript notation for a region inhabited by"Mujaco" described in contemporary accounts as a people who trade"with the people on the Upper Bahr el Abiad and on the confines of Darfur" Secondary notation for Ethiopia in German form- ETI OPI EN(T" and"I" virtually identical in German handwriting of the time) Timbuktu was still a place of great mystery to Europeans at the time as the expeditions of Alexander Gordon Laing(who did not survive the journey) and René Caillé(successfully) lay some two decades ahead. Also included is a copy of a 1933 newspaper article printed on parchment type paper& a Piri Reis Historical information certificate. This 1933 article was one of the first articles that actually explained the map to the public after it was professionally looked at. These certificates are meant to frame and display next to the map. In 1929. Historians found an amazing map ... moredrawn on a gazelle skin. Research showed that it was a genuine document drawn in 1513 by Piri Reis, a famous admiral of the Turkish fleet in the sixteenth century. The Turkish admiral admits in a series of notes on the map that he compiled and copied the data from a large number of source maps, some of which dated back to the 4th century BC or earlier. The Piri Reis map shows the western coast of Africa, the eastern coast of South America, and the northern coast of Antarctica. The northern coastline of Antarctica is perfectly detailed. The most puzzling however is not so much how Piri Reis managed to draw such an accurate map of the Antarctic region 300 years before it was discovered, but that the map shows the coastline under the ice. Geological evidence confirms that the latest date Queen Maud Land could have been charted in an ice-free state is 4000 BC. The question is: Who mapped the Queen Maud Land of Antarctic 4000 BC? To draw his map. Piri Reis used several different sources, collected here and there along his journeys.
