Stunning Antique (1800s) Irish Linen Damask Tablecloth - Greek Urns, etc
A few weeks ago. I bought an absolutely stunning collection of antique linens- mostly Irish or Scottish linen damask- at auction, here in the West of Scotland. They were discovered stored away in trunks. Contrary to my usual practice, I haven't laundered them. They are in such amazing original condition that I thought customers might like to see them just as they arrived, probably having been stored away for fifty years or more. It's virtually impossible to achieve this kind of finish unless you use a professional laundry! This one is quite small compared to the rest, but still a good useful size for a modern home- just off square at 70 by 74 inches. It is beautiful. Has been beautifully laundered and starched and the damask design is crisp and clear- garlands around the edges, another garlands in the centre, with intricate ferns, ... moreflower bells and elegant Greek urns. Just lovely. You may be interested to learn that some of the linens belonged to one Eliza Ellice whose grandfather Thomas Stewart(the joys of internet searching! owned a cotton dyeing and printing'manufactory' in Glasgow. Old Irish Glass. The Walter Harding Collection. Including old English& other pieces" By Walter Harding. Printed in Liverpool in 1925. DISCUSSION: An infamous collection within the world of Irish glass collectors–though more through guilt by association than actual defect. Harding had been one of the best customers of Elizabeth Graydon Stannus. Collector, glass dealer, glass factory owner, and author of a well-known book on antique Irish glass. Unfortunately, Stannus has also been called“ the greatest villain in the manipulation of the history of Irish Glass” McConnell. Magazine Antiques, Sept.2004) I suppose we all want to be"the greatest" something. But villain probably isn't at the top of most people's lists. In a talk in 1924 Stannus seems to have obliquely admitted that she had produced some fake Irish glass ... moreusing genuine old molds. And she was also thought to have“improved” some of her genuine old pieces with extra engraving and cutting. As if that was not enough to endear her to the hearts of collectors, she also admitted to melting down pieces of antique Irish colored glass and using the metal to produce new pieces that would have the"correct" antique color. Such stories inevitably have endings. And this one came in 1936 when the Harding Collection was auctioned by Sotheby’s for about 1/12th of what he had paid for it. The irony of that is that the Harding collection is not known to have had a many fakes, although in the auction, and in this earlier, private catalog, some of the date attributions are improbably early. Still, the collection was large and varied, and is presented elegantly, with most of the glass photographed against a black background. It is a beautiful heavy silver plated dish with scalloped sides and ribbed edges with leaf decoration in the corners. The handle is detachable and the cover can also be used as a serving dish. Rosebuds and foliage in satin stitch and seed stitch. Double row of ladderwork. It is 70" wide by 112" long. Freshly laundered and has no stains or marks and is ready for use. RARE Belleek Pitcher/Jug with second black Belleek mark. Which dates it between 1891 and 1926. Shamrock design around the bottom. This design is continued as you look into the pitcher and see a triple-rounded opening. A bit grimey inside, but no chips, cracks or other defects. Approximately 7.5 inches high at the highest point. Up for auction is this unique double sided porcelain sign that we picked up on a trip to Ireland. It is a very cool sign which says agent for Foyle's Library with the number 2D on it. It is still attached to it's original mounting bracket which adds to the appeal. Although one side of the porcelain is faded and the sign is a little beat up it definitely has a great patina to it.
