Pieter van der(Petrus Kaerius) Pieter van den Keere was one of a number of refugees who fled from religious persecution in the Low Countries between the years 1570 and 1590. He moved to London in 1584 with his sister who married Jodocus Hondius. Also a refugee there, and through Hondius he undoubtedly learned his skills as an engraver and cartographer. In the course of a long working life he engraved a large number of individual maps for prominent cartographers of the day but he also produced an Atlas of the Netherlands(1617-22) and county maps of the British Isles which have become known as Miniature Speeds, a misnomer which calls for some explanation. In about 1599 he engraved plates for 44 maps of the English and Welsh counties. The regions of Scotland and the Irish provinces. The English maps were based on Saxton, the Scottish on Ortelius and the Irish on the famous map by Boazio. These maps were not published at once in book form but there is evidence which suggests a date of issue(in Amsterdam) between 1605 and 1610 although at least one authority believes they existed only in proof form until 1617 when Willem Blaeu issued them with a Latin edition of Camden's Britannia. It's in the shape of an owl and still has its original amber glass eyes. The top has a space holding a small brass thimble. About an American child's size 1(11 mm in diameter) The condition is excellent. In round with no holes, repairs or other damage. The thimble fits perfectly so the owl must have been intended for a child. Aside from a fine surface crack on the front. The bog oak is also in excellent condition with no chips or loss and the owl measures 2" high. Very Pretty& Unusual Victorian Diamond Shamrock Brooch… This is a super little brooch set with some very bright sparkly white diamonds in silver and one of those pieces that looks so much better in real life as the pictures absolutely do not do the item justice(if you disagree I will pay your return postage! The brooch comprises of four silver Shamrocks representing Trinity. Each of the three leaves is set with an old rose cut diamond a jour or open backed to let the light shine through for maximum sparkle. There are 12 Diamonds in total. And with each around 2mm they total approx 1.50 Carat. The back is set with a 15ct gold pin and c clasp. There are no marks on the brooch but it tests as silver and 15ct. It is in excellent condition and there are no holes or frays. There is one unusual thing-you can see in photo 5 there are 4 tan colored squares. They are the only 4 on the whole quilt. I think it was done on purpose. I found a couple rust stains on the backer but they don't go through to the quilt top. The work in this quilt is very high quality and the colors are beautiful.
