From estate sale ~ a 10 yard bolt of Irish linen. Still with original label and binding ribbon, plus parts of the original binding paper. It is a medium weight fabric. And very soft to the touch. This has been exposed to something. Either smoke or just dirt. It is hard to tell, although there is an extremely faint odor of“fireplace” when I bury my nose into the bolt and smell deeply. The markings are limited to the exterior. And the bolt appears never to have been unfolded, the inside is like new. The central design has numerous images with scenes of courting couples, ladies, men, shepherdesses and sheep. At the bottom of the tablecloth is the name Watteau woven into the cloth. When I research the name Watteau I found that he was an artist painter. As this tablecloth is filled with elaborate costumed ladies and gentlemen and is set outdoors with a charming fence and animal setting. It is an old jug in the Sunderland lustre tradition- where mineral salts are added to the kiln during firing to create the wonderful pink lustrous hue to the borders of the decoration. It dates to 1828 and is inscribed Hannah Ellingworth- suggesting that it was a gift to her from a loved one. The jug is particularly interesting for its wonderfully unusual and vivid transfer decoration. This decoration features the"Orangemen" of Irish Politics who formed as an order in 1792. The jug is a prophetic piece urging for"brotherly love" It also speaks of the"Protestant Ascendancy of Holiness to the Lord" and rather paradoxically of"enemies" It is a most fascinating piece. 19th Century Irish Crochet Lace Collar& Cuffs A lovely set from the 1800s. The ground of the collar is densely worked. With many"raised roses" along with three other main motifs. It's in perfect condition. The cuffs have the addition of a lattice-type stitch. One cuff has a hole at the edge– see picture#3. The collar's diameter straight across is 11" and the depth of the lace is 4" The cuffs are 10.5" long and a little over 3" wide. In the 1840s in Kilcullen(County Kildare) Ireland, Mrs Roberts, the wife of the local Church of Ireland minister, taught‘five poor women’ to crochet and they, of their own ingenuity’ interpreted her pieces of old lace. Crocheting over cord, either to form a motif or to highlight parts of a flat shape, has remained the single most distinctive characteristic of Irish Crochet, ... moreand is the Kilcullen makers’ main contribution to the style. BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE cut glass decanter and stopper- LOOKS Irish- nicely cut band!!
This decanter could be even older than 1850. But I really can't date it accurately, except to say it's very old I'm guessing 1920's AT LEAST. It's beautiful cut crystal and has an intricately cut band going around the upper central portion where your hand grabs it to pour. Then large cut ovals above and below this band. It's topped off with a dazzling HUGE cut glass knob topped stopper. The decanter without the stopper measures 8 1/4" high, and the stopper measures just shy of 4" long. CONDITION: A relatively small nick in the upper lip of the decanter, numerous fleabites and nicks on the base of the stopper, some very light clouding on some sections of the interior, can totally still see through the glass, some colored liquid in it and I believe it would disappear. I felt all the way around the diamond cut ... moreband about three times and felt nothing, and I see nothing on that. The flat base has numerous light scratches commiserate with age and use. The stopper has 3 or 4 small bubbles in the glass, and there are a few in the glass of the decanter as well. I see no signature or maker's mark. This is a great addition to the cocktail table, cart or tray, with some kind of amber colored liquid in it would be ideal. It's a very solid, masculine piece. And again, age wise I'm guessing, I think my pictures came out kind of washed out I don't know yet how much detail you can see against the pink wall.
