Description: A very attractive c. 1750 example of John Thornton and Mount and Page's important nautical chart or maritime map of the eastern coast of North America from Cape Henry to the Mouth of the St. Lawrence. The map includes the coasts of Virginia. Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland as well as illustrating the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay in full. Shading indicates the various offshore shoals including the Nantucket Shoals, St. Georges Bank, the Shoals of Acadia, the Sable Island Shoals, and others. Depth soundings appear throughout, particularly on shoals and important harbors such as the Chesapeake Bay, New York, and Martha's Vineyard. Various rivers, cities, and towns are noted along the coast including Philadelphia, New York, Boston, among others. This important and popular chart was issued in various editions of The English Pilot and the Atlas Maritimus for almost 100 years; nonetheless, there are only two known states, of which this is the second. The overall height is 12.6" The diameters are, base, 4.6" cup top 5.2" and the handle width is 10.25" The weight is 1192 grams, 38.33 troy ounces. An impressive cup and cover of great age. The cover has a pineapple finial and sits atop the steeply sloping cover which runs down to a repousse band of acanthus leaves. Gorgeous"Farm Fresh" Quilt. MEASURED as 60" Wide x 82" long. A study in GEOMETRY. Simply two colors- pattern is Simple Irish Chain. Perhaps someone out there has a name or ID for this- was told by a quilter that this is the best way to identify it. Let me know! Quilt blocks are hand pieced and entirely hand joined using fine. Dressmaker stitches. Blue is a deep Wedgwood shade. And the white has mellowed to a rich cream shade over time. The Underside has some color from storage- likely in a wooden drawer or such. We also note an area of amber spots as shown in photos. Likely all will soak out with Oxy. This is just gorgeous over a lace or Eyelet Dust Ruffle. This was likely made by a clever seamstress. Perhaps a young lady for her Hope Chest or perhaps by a group as we count as many as 20 stitches per inch. Extremely Rare Housekeeper's Assistant or Modern Art of Cookery Made easy and familiar Selected from Glass and Briggs Cookery With many useful Additions and Alterations By a Professed Cook Dublin Printed by J. Martin. No. 59 Great-Georges Street, 1806. Acceptable condition 207 year old cookbook printed in Dublin. Ireland. The front cover has fully detached from the spineface and page block, but is present. Extremely thin, leather spineface is also present and attached but very loose, cracking, splitting and chipping. Reverse coverboard is still attached to the pageblock, though is fairly loose. Pageblock is still remarkably well bound with no pages detaching or detached. Pages are well intact with browning from age and are mostly quite clean with scattered foxing or minor soiling spots. Last page in the"Bill of Fare" section ... morehas a tear, some of the last pages have chipping at the lower lefthand corner which does not effect the text. Book is really amazingly intact and complete for its age. A home-made brown paper dustjacket was made for the book at one point, probably in the last 25 to 50 years, which seems to have done a great job of protecting it. Front of the book has a bit of notation dated 1829 from a former owner. Contents of the book by chapter are: Chap I Roasting, Boiling, etc. Chap II Made Dishes. Chap III To make a Number of Dishes fit for Supper, or Side-Dish, and little Corner-Dishes for a great table. Chap IV To dress Fish. Chap V Soups and Broths. Chap VI Puddings. Chap VII Pies. Chap VIII A number of Dishes for Lent, which may be made use of at any other Time. Chap IX Directions for Sick. Chap X For Captains of Ships. Chap XI Of Hogs Pudding, Sausages, etc. Chap XII To pot, and make Hams, etc. Chap XIII Of Pickling. A rare Victoria sterling silver souvenir spoon. It is hallmarked for London 1895 with the maker’s marks being CSFS for Saunders and Shepherd. It has been interestingly designed around an Irish theme having shamrocks at the base of the handle and most interestingly an Irish shillelagh fighter forming its terminal. He is holding a club in his arm and has taken a blow as he is wearing an eye patch over his left eye. It is in super condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measures 75 1/2" x 75 1/2" Triple Irish chain in turkey red and tan. It is densely hand quilted at 7 stitches per inch. With gridwork 2" apart Hand pieced and hand bound with a red Filled with a thin cotton batting. Backed in a blue aqua fabric ~ possibly newer than the top Not perfect. But displays nicely. There are two pea size age spots, a pea size light blue spot, two pin holes on the corners from hanging, a rice size thinning corner on another corner, two light gray smudges, and one easy repair. A gentleman I met that was originally from England previously had a career in demolition. On one of his jobs in the UK he was paid to destroy a badge and button mint. In the clean up stage before the deconstruction he found this die in the building. These dies worked with a press to stamp badges to be used by a variety of organizations. This is very large and heavy measuring about 12 3/8" tall and 6 1/2" diameter. Finely beveled handle and body. With cut flat geometric panels across the whole body. There are two initials engraved on front also. Cut flat and polished base and pontil. A very fine piece of glasswork. This is about 200 years old and I believe Anglo-Irish. Very heavy. Descripti on: Late 1800's blue and white Irish chain quilt. This is a thin summer weight quilt. The stitching is done in a double grid. It is hand stitched at 8 SPI and measures 81 X 67. Nice quilt. Great colors& pattern. Condition: There are a few areas of light spots/staining as shown. The binding has wear& there is an area on the edge that has some wear through to the fabric(pictured) There are some teeny holes on the reverse side. But they are very insignificant and tiny. It is of a boat shape with panelled corners and is very decorative with flowers and leaves engraved to the sides and down the front of the wide lip. It has a slightly splayed appplied top rim which has an embossed shell and banner leaf shape in each corner with a border pattern of what I can best describe of elongated beads meeting the decorative corners. To one side there are some small and very fancy engaved entwined initials. Which are hardly noticed with the floral pattern, but I am afraid that I cannot confirm how many or what they are as they ... moreare very fancy. It has a wide outward curved lip and a very decorative handle. It stands on 4 claw feet and and is made from a good guage of silver with clear hallmarks, except the makers mark which is not visible Assay Office: DUBLIN Date: 1822 Makers Marks: None visible Dimensions: 7 inches long from handle to lip. 3.5 inches wide and 5 inches tall to the top of the handle. It weighs 186g Condition: Overall it is in very good condtion. Particularly considering it is 191 years old, but it does have little impression in the base caused by a foot, and also an impresession on the inside where the handle joins the body. To the base there are also some little pin prick size dings but these are very minor. antique wooden flute Prowse Nicholson's Improved Irish Olwell shop
Up for auction is a Thomas Prowse Nicholson's Improved flute from around 1840. Of cocus wood and silver keys and rings(the tubing in the head and barrel is made of tinned brass, as is usually the case) The is the flute design developed by Charles Nicholson that had such a huge impact on the development of the flute in the 19th century. And of the creation of the modern Boehm flute. Stamped on the body of the flute is Nicholson's Improved Thomas Prowse, Hanby St and the serial number 4000. Numerous earlier flutes by Thomas Prowse exist from his days as the foreman at Clementi's. As well as flutes with his own name on them from the 1830's. I find it interesting that at this later stage, he started angling the#3 and#6 holes, down toward the foot, which doesn't quite show up in these pictures) to try to make these notes flatter, ... moreas is sometimes down with recorders and bassoons. I think this shows that at this time there was more attention being paid to the tuning of the flute. Previously, it was required of the player to have a very flexible embouchure, and to"tune" the instrument as he played, whereas at this time, with people like Theobald Boehm re-engineering the whole idea of flute tuning. This flute shows that attempts were being made with the standard 8 key flute, to bring it more in accord with"modern" ideas. It's around this period that equal temperment finally takes over the design of instruments. Offering a wonderful antique quilt that has been hand pieced and hand quilted. It is in the Irish chain pattern with wreath quilting in the solid white blocks. It measures 67 1/2 by 72 inches with no holes or tears. This was probably a larger quilt at one time which has been rebound along the edges with white machine sewn fabric. I have listed this as a twin to allow plenty of overhang but it could possibly be used for a full sized bed. Beautiful workmanship and condition!
