Hamm, published in Philadelphia by Carey& Lea, circa 1831. This is a copper engraving, outline hand colored. It measures 10 3/8" in height. x8 3/4" in width. This is a historic map of the area surrounding the northern part of the Adriatic Sea. It shows places such as Austria, parts of Switzerland and Bavaria, Slovania, Croatia, and Bosnia Herzegovina. It shows the Greek names of the cities as well as the rivers and mountain ranges. A historic note from the internet: In ancient geography. Vindelicia is a country bounded on the south by Raetia, on the north by the Danube and the Hadrian's Limes Germanicus, on the east by the Oenus(Inn) on the west by the territory of the Helvetii. It thus corresponded to the northeast portion of Switzerland, the southeast of Baden, and the south of Württemberg and Bavaria. Its chief town was Augusta Vindelicorum(Augsburg) Its inhabitants, the Vindelici were probably Celtic(Gaulish) or Germanic, and a possible etymology of their name includes an element vind-cognate to Irish find- white" compare Ginevra) Together with the neighboring tribes they were subjugated by Tiberius in 15 BC. The Augustean inscription of 12 BC mentions four tribes of the Vindelici among the defeated. Condition: The map has light browning and a crease in the middle where it was part of a book. Other than that the map is in excellent condition with no tears or repairs and vivid colors. Please note that since the map was folded in a book. A faint imprint of each side is apparent on the opposite side. The map is not matted, however, it comes in a transparent plastic cover with cardboard to give it a strong backing. Antique Irish Mountmellick Night Dress Case-Gold Thread Work- Unique Design
A unique rare design Irish Mountmellick night dress case in excellent condition featuring under the sea conch shells. Clam shells, coral, see grass using various Mountmellick embroidery and crewel techniques i.e. bullion stitch, indented buttonholing stitch, fish bone stitch, double knot stitch, satin stitch-flat, cable plait, French knots etc. The case measures 13" x 20" and finished with a padded button hole stitch and a knit lace edging which is not the typical Mountmellick finish which leads me to believe this was made at later time(end of the 19th C) The embroidery work is done with gold silk threads. The textile itself is a heavy jean material used for this type of needle work. The case has not been laundered and could use a light wash. It is without mends, stains, or weak areas. You are buying an antique unused ivory white Irish linen damask tablecloth with a design of ROCK OF CASHEL and other Irish motifs. There are Irish wolfhounds. Towers, celtic crosses and the Rock of Cashel at either side of the centre. The border includes harps and more celtic knots and shamrocks. So very Irish! Measures 90" by 70" so a very generous size. In excellent condition with no damage however it has been stored unused for a long time so has some storag emarks. It is currently ivory white due to the glazed dressing but after a hot wash will come up bright white. It will last for years and become more beautiful every time it is washed and ironed. Antique to vintage Irish? insert lace 1 1/2 yards by 1 1/2 inches wide handmade?
Over the next couple of weeks I will be listing loads of lace items. All were given to me 40 years ago by a 90 year old woman. Who has worked as a seamstress in London from the age of 10 years old! so the pieces I have are from about 1886 onwards. Nonw of the lace[this piece or any I will be offering] has a musty smell, but it does need washing to remove yellowing from age. I used many of the pieces I had in dressing antique dolls that I had either collected or reproduced myself. Unfortunately my hands and eyes don't enjoy doing such fine work anymore. So it's time to stop hoarding! As I am not a lace'buff' I will try to do my best in naming them. But could very well get it wrong. I much prefer to let the pictures speak for themselves. GEE, I am not a photographer either but I will try. When I know a piece has faults I will ... moremention them as well as showing them in the pictures. Particular item listed: This antique Irish[ insertion lace has delicate raised roses and the whole piece is knobby. On close inspection the lace is so uneven I am sure it is hand made and not machine made. I am not totally sure whether it will wash to white or not. It could be ecru in color. Under a magnifying glass it almost looks like a piece that was crocheted by'fairies. Much more beautiful in real life than in pictures because of the very, very delicate work. It was acquired from an antique dealer in Dublin. Ireland on one of my trips as culinary historian for Irish America Magazine. At the time of purchase, it was yellowed with age, so I had it professionally cleaned by a restoration expert who wrapped it in acid free tissue in which it has been stored dust free for ten years. I imagine that thousands of hours went into its fabrication. Please excuse the color quality of my pix. The photos were shot in artificial light. The lace is actually bright snow white. Irish Carrickmacross is rare to find in this size and condition. There are some minor separation/ breaks in the net. None are easily seen, they are very small. This has not been treated and does have an overall patina with a couple light tanning spots. All would easily come up with a light soak if you wish. The patina is soft and very nice. Antique Tambour LACE scarf or vestment scapular 56" possibly Limerick Irish
BEAUTIFUL. HIGHLY DETAILED 56" long and 5.75" wide with the ends flaring to 7" wide. Most likely a 19th c piece. This beautiful tambour lace, hand stitched onto soft netting, is a family piece that I believe is Limerick lace because of our 19th C connections to County Limerick and Limerick City. It is clean but not bright white, possibly the tan coloring is age. It is in very good to excellent condition with a few minor tears in the netting. The chain stitching is very detailed with the scarf being covered in a repeated patter of three leaf clovers and dots. Edging work is scalloped with what appears to be another clover or plant. The ends of this scarf or clerical scapular is filled with designs including leaves, repeated clovers, possible thistles and a harp, so Irish.
