The map has north oriented to the right and identifies the four provinces of Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht as well as many counties, cities and towns including Dublin. Very detailed and beautifully engraved, the map is decorated with a banner style cartouche as well as a scale of miles and calligraphic labelling. Mapmaker: Herman Moll(1654- 1732) was an ... moreimportant 18th century map publisher and engraver based in London and Holland. Moll's origins are disputed with some suggesting he was born in the Netherlands and others Germany- the Moll name was common in both countries during this period. Most likely Moll was a German from Bremen. As his will, friends, and contemporaries suggest. What is known for certain is that he moved to London in 1678, possibly fleeing the Scanian War, where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt and other London map publishers. Around the turn of the century, Moll set up his own shop where he produced a large corpus of work known for its high quality and decorative flair. As a new émigré to England, Moll made himself more English than the English, and through his cartography proved a fierce advocate for his adopted nation. Antique Killarney Ireland Celtic Carved Bog Oak Box St Patricks Day Robert Black
Up for bid is a spectacular antique 19th century hand carved bog oak box from Killarney. Ireland. This is a stunning piece and available just in time for that special gift for St. Patrick's Day. This rare box has a deep rich patina and has ornate carvings throughout. The box has carved images of clovers on all sides and with the inside doors. The lid with a leaf scalloped edge surrounds a celtic cottage with tall trees flanking both sides. The doors have roses on all corners and a celtic castle on the right door and a cathedral/ church on the left door. There are three draws, top draw has carved grapes and leaves, middle draw has acorns and oak leaves and the bottom draw has clovers. Box is in good condition for age. There seems to have been repairs to it over the years. It is titled"Usher. Archbishop of Armagh. And it shows a classic portrait of this historic Irish cleric. Adding greatly to the artistry of this image are the many detailed engraved symbolic images of books, scrolls, emblems, etc. surrounding the portrait. This is an original antique copper plate engraving by George Vertue. Made in the year 1738, his name and date inscribed inside the very clear platemark.
