The handpainted portrait of the woman has a slight watercolor effect that seems to have been created by the glazing or firing process. The beaded border is raised and also hand painted. There are 2 hairline cracks, one on the back and one on the front of the plate(as shown) They are hardly noticeable and difficult to photograph. Antique Belleek Ireland Porcelain 4 Strand Henshall Twig Basket 8.5"
click images and expand window for a larger view. Antique 4 Strand Henshall Irish Belleek Basket Up for auction is a very rare authentic charming antique Irish 4-Strand Belleek Basket. This porcelain basket was produced in Ireland at the Belleek Company in Fermanagh County between 1921-1954. It measures 8.5" long. The basket is woven from fragile strands of ivory coloured porcelain. There are some chips and some missing pieces but still is a beautiful and rare example. The basket can be professionally repaired if need be but still displays amazingly. The decoration of the basket is completely delightful. Adorned with the flowers that could be found blooming in the hedges and waysides around the rushy fields of County Fermanagh, Ireland, where the Belleek pottery was and still is located. It also includes the moss briar rose, so called ... morebecause the mass of tiny thorns on its stems looks like moss. All is covered in a pretty'nacreous' pearlescent like mother-of-pearl) glaze. This design is called a Henshall's or twig basket after the Victorian ceramic artist William Henshall who designed most of the early floral pieces and especially these floral baskets for Belleek. Way back in the 1870s. This is a four strand weave. Which was first produced in 1921(nineteen years after Henshall was dead and gone) and, with the wording"Belleek Co Fermanagh" we know it to date to the period 1921 to 1954. Antique Muller Volkstedt"Carmen" Figurine This is a gorgeous. Rare Irish Dresden lace figurine by Muller Volkstedt depicting the beloved"Carmen, the Spanish flamenco dancer from Georges Bizet's opera of the same name. Carmen's dress is a froth of lace in striking black and white. Set off by red heels and choker and gold details. Her face is beautiful, her demeanor fierce, and her pose in dance captures the movement of the Spanish flamenco. This figurine is delightfully detailed and stands 6" high. The mark of the the bottom is the crown MV mark which dates this to the years between 1907 and 1949. It is also marked"Dresden, Ireland. On close inspection I find one spot of missing black lace at her back, and there may be other losses that are too tiny to find. Hidden underneath the white ruffles I find some yellowed ... morespots which are probably glue from an old repair to the lace. I don't see any sign of damage to the base, her body, or her head. Tinori Corn Cream was the made and produced in Cork by a man called Eugene Mac Sweeny proprietor of his own pharmacy at Patrick Street Cork. In this Advertisement. Tinori is aimed at the outgoing middle class ladies at the time. Wearing the newest style of shoes. As true even now as back then, the ladies would develop severe corns from wearing high heels and from wearing poor footwear in general. The advertisement was likely to be in print around the early 1900s period due to decor in the background and period styles of the dress worn by the ladies depicting the use of the Tinori Corn Cream. Tinori was later to expand into advertising corn creams depicting soldiers in World War One using ... moreit as ammo to fill their guns. Corn and other foot ailments were common in the trench due to often wet and rancid conditions. So Tinori was also sold both genders in equal measure. ANTIQUE IRISH CUT GLASS - IRELAND GLASSWARE -And with Faked & Forged Glass
Old Irish Glass. The Walter Harding Collection. Including old English& other pieces" By Walter Harding. Printed in Liverpool in 1925. DISCUSSION: An infamous collection within the world of Irish glass collectors–though more through guilt by association than actual defect. Harding had been one of the best customers of Elizabeth Graydon Stannus. Collector, glass dealer, glass factory owner, and author of a well-known book on antique Irish glass. Unfortunately, Stannus has also been called“ the greatest villain in the manipulation of the history of Irish Glass” McConnell. Magazine Antiques, Sept.2004) I suppose we all want to be"the greatest" something. But villain probably isn't at the top of most people's lists. In a talk in 1924 Stannus seems to have obliquely admitted that she had produced some fake Irish glass ... moreusing genuine old molds. And she was also thought to have“improved” some of her genuine old pieces with extra engraving and cutting. As if that was not enough to endear her to the hearts of collectors, she also admitted to melting down pieces of antique Irish colored glass and using the metal to produce new pieces that would have the"correct" antique color. Such stories inevitably have endings. And this one came in 1936 when the Harding Collection was auctioned by Sotheby’s for about 1/12th of what he had paid for it. The irony of that is that the Harding collection is not known to have had a many fakes, although in the auction, and in this earlier, private catalog, some of the date attributions are improbably early. Still, the collection was large and varied, and is presented elegantly, with most of the glass photographed against a black background. And if you are looking for a famous collection of Irish glass(for better or worse) this is certainly it. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 6.5”x10” 108 pages, many black& white plates. Bonne's work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor. Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses.
