This auction is for a rare hand colored map of Bohemia from 1630. This map was made by Petrus Kaerius and published by Joannes Janssonius. Also known as Jan Jansson. Jan Jansson was one of the greatest cartographers and map publishers of his time and the son in law of Hondius. This map is composed of two pages of an atlas and is framed with glass on both sides so the text is visible on the reverse. This map is about 22" by 18" and is in excellent condition. There is some very light foxing and a few pencil marks on the edges of the map, but no tears, holes, or stains. The frame has some wear and scratches but is also in excellent condition. This map is beautifully hand colored and has two crests at the top corners. This is a rare map and very hard to find in this condition. What we have here today is an antique map of Bridgeport. Very nice piece. Has some waves from minor water damage. Mostly in lower right corner. See rear lower left. Looks way better than pictures, and I prefer it that way. Just loosely mounted due to age, and looks very good if I press the back against glass. No real discoloration to speak of. Says"First Edition 1943" on lower left with a bunch of other stuff. Antique map of South America by George Philip& Son. Circa 1880. The map is in very good condition with only minor age-related yellowing. The colors are uniformly muted; they are consistently soft overall. You might say faded. But the colors are uniformly faded if that makes sense. Beautifully& professionally framed in an antiqued gold gilt-like painted frame with carved detailing. Behind thin plexiglas(I think it is plexiglas, it might be regular glass, it is cool to the touch) The map has a small horizontal crease right in the middle. Up for your consideration is a beautiful quality Antique Map of Pomerania. The map was done in the 1630's by Johannes Janssonius a cartographer and publisher born in 1588. His father was a publisher and bookseller. He married the daughter opf a cartograpgher and puiblisher and set up a business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. He published his first maps in 1616 and contiued publishing a large amount of maps. From 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius. The map shows Pomnerania and the island of Rugen. There are 4 nicely hand colored cartouches and a heraldic cartouche. The map shows ships sailing in the ocean with a sea serpent close to the center of the map. One of the cartouches shows the king of Popmerania Bugislav Ivnior XIV. There is also a Coat of Arms. In another cartouche it reads Nortarum ... moreExplicatio Urbes. Urbes cum arcibus, Ducalibus, Pagi. The bottom right hand corner reads Nova Illustraissimi Ducatus Pomeraniae Tabula, antea a Viro cl.d.d. Eilhardo Lubino edita, nune iterum correcta per Frid.Palbitzke, Pomer. L.L. Studiosum. The bottom left cartouche shows the distances on the map, and reads Amstelodami, Apud Ioannem IanBonium. The map is very detailed and shows castles, forests,cities, lakes and rivers. I believe the Baltic Sea surrounds the land. The map seems to be in good condition with some discoloration here and there and a small tear in the upper left hand corner. The frame looks like an older one with wood nails and I believe is maple. The paper on the back of the picture looks newer and was replaced at some point. The map has writing on the back that you can see thru the paper. This must have come out of a book because there is a crease down the middle of the map. I'm no experty on antique maps and got my information by research on line. Please ask questions if in doubt and I'm always interested in any info if you know more about this map. Up for your consideration is this rare antique map of Colt's Neck. New Jersey in a beautifully matted new frame. This area used to be called Atlantic in the 19th century. It features the names of the property owners of the time. The hand colored map is in very good condition for its age with some light age yellowing on the edges and a penciled in name above Edinburgh. It has been backed with acid free materials and matte board and measures about 22 3/4 by 25 inches, overall. The frame includes its glass and backing. RARE ANTIQUE N & S S JOCELYN FRAMED ENGRAVED HAND OUTLINED MAP OF ITALY 1823 !
Here we have an extremely rare plate featuring a map of Italy dated 1823 which was originally housed in an early 19th century atlas of maps produced by Nathaniel Jocelyn and his brother Simeon Smith Jocelyn. Born in New Haven. Connecticut in 1796, Nathaniel was a talented engraver and went on to found the N. S.S. Jocelyn Co. with his brother, producing"A New Universal Atlas of The World" 1st edition published 1822, second edition published 1825. Having been removed from an atlas and with the border dated"Anno(year) 1823. I can only assume this is from the first edition. As can be seen from the enscription to the reverse of the frame this was given as a wedding present by a Mrs Samoje and Miss Bernstein of New York. I cannot say when this happened but probably 100+ years ago. Whether the aforementioned border and inscription ... morewas added at the time. Seems likely and it may be the case that the original 1st edition atlas was believed to have been purchased in 1823. Knowing that The Kingdom of Sardinia acquired Liguria and Genoa through the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The map is definitely historically accurate. The engraving and colouration appears correct in accordance with other Jocelyn maps of the era. The map itself measures a little over 20 cms by 25 cms and the framed piece. About 32.5 cms by 39 cms. I have endeavoured to provide as many photos as possible and can only apologise for any shadows or flashes. There is some discolouration. Light damage to the frame and light foxing. Hopefully, you can gauge this from the pictures I have posted to accompany this lot. Having said that, for a framed plate from an early 19th century map, I believe it is in decent order. I have also been unable to find another available example. A truely fantastic piece of cartographic and Italian history!
