The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Here is an old(antique) Large. Pull down map of ancient Greece(looks like the Pauline age) It does have some discoloration at the bottom- in some of the pictures you'll notice some lines and shading that aren't on the map they are just shadows behind it(sorry bad pictures) the map is in otherwise good shape. There is no date on the map itself but the latest patent date on the pole is 1901 so I'm assuming the map dates around that era. I'm not sure if the coil mechanism works- I have done my best to describe this item and as such it is sold as is.

On the right sides of the map has the four seasons Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and on the left human figures of the zodiac sign Ignis(Fire) Aer(Air) Aqua(Water) and Terra(Earth) All of the writings on the canvas are in Latin. Former Chief Cartographer for National Geographic, died on May 22, 2005. Born July 11, 1928, he earned his BS at the U.S. Military Academy a West Point in 1952. Recognizing his keen geographical intellect and leadership potential in the classroom the Army sent him to Syracuse University in 1963 for training to teach geography at West Point. He completed his MA in 1965 and became and instructor in the Department of Earth, Space and Graphic Sciences at West Point in 1966. In 1969-70, he served as Parachute ... moreand Ranger and earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge while commanding an Infantry Battalion in the Vietnam War and also served as deputy commander of a brigade. He was awarded numerous medals, including four Bronze Stars—two of these for valor. Other assignments took him around the world to various military installations in Germany, the Panama Canal Zone, Saudi Arabia, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Fort Benning, Georgia. Following these assignments. He again returned to West Point as a Professor of Geography and was awarded his PhD from Syracuse in 1981 completing his dissertation topic on the"The Role of the United States Army in the Colonization of the Trans-Missouri West: Kansas, 1804-1861" Meanwhile, he initiated two academic programs within the Geography Department at West Point that are still active today. And Ortelius based the content of the map mainly on the writings of Pliny, Strabo, Herodotus and `other classical authors. On the title page of the Parergon section of the atlas. Ortelius notes that these historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at ... morethe instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present day" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas.
