Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of Spain& Portugal- ancient, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) Corrected to 1st Feby. 1845. This map is from the first edition of the atlas published under the imprimatur of Charles Knight, who purchased the Society's inventory, including the map plates, in 1846. The title-page carries a date of 1848. Knight was undertaking a revision of the maps for the Society even before he took possession of the plates, and as with the initial series, revisions were issued over time rather than all at once. For map sheets that had not been revised, including only to update the publisher's name, Knight drew from the existing inventory. Thus this atlas includes many map sheets with the imprimatur of Baldwin and Cradock, the original publishers. The SDUK began its map publishing project ... moreunder the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved and delicately colored in outline, these maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. Original hand color. This is a unique and rare vintage map of the BoraBora Island. It is the Maraes- Ancient Sacrificial Altars- as you can see in the pictures they are marked thru-out the map. I do not know much else about this map- It does have some bends in it from being folded. I have it rolled up to try and roll out some of the marks. The pictures are the best description of this map, as well as its condition. I have two of these maps to sell- both are in the same condition. Vintage Trimmed Classroom Wall Map Ancient Italy Linen Back
This vintage linen-backed wall map was cut down from a larger map and has slightly irregular edges that could be evened out if desired. The map is faded and has age toning and creases. But I think these just add to its vintage appeal, especially given its ancient subject matter. The map measures approximately 25&1/8" by 29&15/16" As shown. The linen back has age discoloration but no significant wear and no tears. This would look fabulous in the right frame!
