Vintage School Map Ancient Italy
Recently came into possession of a bunch of old school maps. I was going to save them for myself. But have recently left the teaching profession, so onto eBay they go! This is a General Reference Map of Ancient Italy, put out by the George F. Cram Company of Indianapolis. It is not a pull-down map, but rather comes on two wooden dowels that roll up and tie together. This is a large wall map, measuring about 54 inches wide. Not sure of its age, but its definitely vintage- I would guess 60's to early 70's, but that's just a guess. It's in wonderful shape for its age- looks like one pin went through it above the"An" in"Ancient" at the very top. Otherwise condition and color are great. Use it in your classroom, or frame it for your living room- choice is yours. In French, is a volume from a reknowned set by the famous historian and philosopher of education Charles Rollin(1661-1741) Rollin's Ancient History and Roman History were quite famous in their own day, and became standard referencse work in France for generations. This volume of Roman History gives a lot of detail about the 6th century B.C.544-542) including the first Punic War with Carthage, the general Scipio, and expeditions in Greece. Excellent! But there is more. Bound in between pages 494 and 495 is a wonderful eighteenth century MAP of ancient Greece. With original coloring, in practically mint condition, a total pleasure to contemplate. It's by the great Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville(1697-1782) considered to be the best mapmaker ... moreof his time. There are 630+ pages to this substantial volume. Publication date on the title page is 1712. But at the end of the book we find the date 1741. Condition is generally good, with slightly worn but sturdy leather binding and a raised and gilded spine. There is a little weakness to the binding around page 312. The pages have toned a little but are still easily legible; the original endpapers are present, as well as a bound-in leather bookmark. This very interesting book is offered at a reasonable opening price. An excellent find for lovers of ancient history. Rome, Greece, old maps, and fine bookmaking. Patented in 1838, was an early attempt to replace expensive hand colouring of engravings by a reliable, mechanised method.
