BATH ATLAS MAP POSTCARD OLD OLDE ENGLAND BRITAIN U.K. ARTIST CARTOGRAPHER: JOHN SPEED FROM: THE THEATRE OF THE EMPIRE OF GREAT BRITAINE(1611) ON BACK ... moreOF POSTCARD: BATH The most famous of English spa towns. Bath was recommended by physicians in Speed's time"to cure and conquer the rebellious stubbornness of corrupt humours. This map depicts Bath long before the construction of the elegant streets of which Jan Austen wrote. The bridge over the River Avon has yet to appear and replace the ferry pulled across by ropes. UNUSED MODERN CHROME c. 2007 REPRODUCTION NON-LINEN ART POST CARD POSTCARD APPROX. SIZE OF CARD: 6.5" X 4.75" SHIPPING AND HANDLING: FREE IN UNITED STATES; $2 WORLDWIDE With the publication of The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine in 1611. John Speed launched Britain into the modern era of mapmaking. Speed(1552- 1629) was an antiquarian who helped preserve many legends about britain's history, but his unique maps are his chief legacy. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. If so, the maps were then edited by Speed to give them a unified style. The streets are shown in plan, and the principal buildings are drawn in elevation: the result resembles an aerial view. On most of his maps. Speed provides a key

Rare Antique 1627 Map of RUTLANDSHIRE by Van Der KEERE - Minature Speed Map
Rare Antique 1627 Map of RUTLANDSHIRE by Van Der KEERE- Minature Speed Map Description: KEERE. Pieter Van Der(Petrus Kaerius) Rutlandshire(Miniature Speed' Map) London: William Humble:1627] A fine original minature map of Rutlandshire. The map engraved by Pieter van der Keere in c1627. The map with engraved title cartouche and separate scale of distance. Image size approx. 84mm x 122mm. With margins and text to verso. An usually VG+ bright clean impression of this rare'Miniature Speed' map. KEERE. Pieter van der(Petrus Kaerius) Pieter van den Keere was one of a number of refugees who fled from religious persecution in the Low Countries between the years 1570 and 1590. He moved to London in 1584 with his sister who married Jodocus Hondius. Also a refugee there, and through Hondius he undoubtedly learned his skills as an engraver ... moreand cartographer. In the course of a long working life he engraved a large number of individual maps for prominent cartographers of the day but he also produced an Atlas of the Netherlands(1617-22) and county maps of the British Isles which have become known as Miniature Speeds, a misnomer which calls for some explanation. In about 1599 he engraved plates for 44 maps of the English and Welsh counties. The regions of Scotland and the Irish provinces. The English maps were based on Saxton, the Scottish on Ortelius and the Irish on the famous map by Boazio. These maps were not published at once in book form but there is evidence which suggests a date of issue(in Amsterdam) between 1605 and 1610 although at least one authority believes they existed only in proof form until 1617 when Willem Blaeu issued them with a Latin edition of Camden's Britannia. At this stage two maps were added. One of the British Isles and the other of Yorkshire, the latter derived from Saxton. To confuse things further the title page of this edition is signed'Guilielmus noster Janssonius' which is the Latinized form of Blaeu's name commonly used up to 1619. At some time after this the plates

Norfolk Rare den Keere 1617 Ed. Miniature Speed Latin Genuine Old Antique Map
Norfolcia" A small map of Norfolk(approx. 5" x 3.5" visible in the mount) by Pieter van den Keere. Such maps are known as"Miniature Speeds" as the 1627 English edition of these maps used the text found on John Speed's much larger county maps. However this example is from the much rarer edition issued by WJ Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1617 to accompany a Latin edition of Camden's"Britannia" In excellent condition with attractive handcolouring. In a Hogarth frame double-glazed to reveal the Latin text verso. A guaranteed genuine 17th century map. Miniature Speeds" are highly collectable being most attractive. Very early county maps. This example bears the imprint"P.Kaerius coelavit. bottom left, being the Latin version of den Keere's name. The photos are taken through glass which may mean there ... moreare reflections. Frame size approx. 10" x 9" Starting at the ridiculous price of 0.99p with no reserve. But I expect this item to rise to a fitting level for so old and attractive an item. Please note that I will be away until Tuesday 28th May. However. Assuming the item has been paid for I should be able to send it off on the Wednesday, 29th. I will post worldwide.
