BATH ATLAS MAP POSTCARD OLD OLDE ENGLAND BRITAIN U.K. ARTIST CARTOGRAPHER: JOHN SPEED FROM: THE THEATRE OF THE EMPIRE OF GREAT BRITAINE(1611) ON BACK ... moreOF POSTCARD: BATH The most famous of English spa towns. Bath was recommended by physicians in Speed's time"to cure and conquer the rebellious stubbornness of corrupt humours. This map depicts Bath long before the construction of the elegant streets of which Jan Austen wrote. The bridge over the River Avon has yet to appear and replace the ferry pulled across by ropes. John Speed launched Britain into the modern era of mapmaking. Speed(1552- 1629) was an antiquarian who helped preserve many legends about britain's history, but his unique maps are his chief legacy. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. If so, the maps were then edited by Speed to give them a unified style. The streets are shown in plan, and the principal buildings are drawn in elevation: the result resembles an aerial view. On most of his maps. Speed provides a key

1849 Cruchley Pocket Map of London. England WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Cruchley's New Plan of London Shewing all the New and Intended Improvements to the Present Time. 1835 Hall Map of the British Isles: England, Scotland, Ireland
1835 Hall Map of the British Isles: England. Scotland, Ireland WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: British Isles. Description: This is a beautiful map of the British Isles from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It includes England. Scotland and Ireland and covers from the Orkney Islands to the Scilly Isles in the south. An inset in the upper left quadrant details the Shetland Islands. This map notes towns, rivers, mountains, railroads, and various other important topographical details. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and territorial boundaries are outlined in color. As this map was being printed, the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland had already amalgamated into a single political entity. England and Scotland were in the midst of the Industrial Revolution. ... moreThough England and Scotland flourished throughout the 19th century, Ireland suffered a series of famines, the worst being the Great Irish Famine, which lasted from 1845– 1849 and killed about a million people. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ this type of border, it is possibly the earliest to use it on such a large scale. Both the choice to use steel plate engraving and the addition of the attractive keyboard boarder are evolutions of anti-forgery efforts. Copper plates, which were commonly used for printing bank notes in the early 19th century, proved largely unsuitable due to their overall fragility and the ease with which they could be duplicated. In 1819 the Bank of Englan

1867 British Admirality Map , the Java Sea & Passages to China, Rare Ships Map
This lot offers the map that measures 39 x 27 inches. The legend shows that it was compiled from information from the British and Dutch government surveys of 1867. The map shows the southern passages to China and the Sunda Straight. The very bottom of the map shows that it was published in London at the Admirality. Also. Along the bottom it shows dates that corrections were made. The last of these is dated October of 1877. I believe that was the actual print date of this map. There is a stamp with the name B. Falconer Company of Hong Kong. I believe that would be the company that owned the map and carried it on its shipping vessel. The map is made of a somewhat thick material. I believe it is parchment. The entire border of the map has a fold of canvas sewn onto it. This has protected the edges from tearing. The map has been rolled up somewhat ... moreloosely for more than 100 years and it no longer lays flat. There are some stains probably caused by water, which are mostly confined to the lower part of the map. There is one spot in the lower left hand corner that has a crack, this can be seen on the photo. The upper portion of the map; which shows Sumatra, Borneo, and the China Sea, is remarkably clean and in good condition. Please see the close-up photos for more details. Please see my other listings for more interesting items. I will combine shipping in order to save costs. Please wait for the invoice. Thanks for looking!

1835 Hall Map of England and Wales
1835 Hall Map of England and Wales WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: England and Wales. Description: This is a beautiful map of England and Wales from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It covers both England and Wales from Northumberland to Cornwall and includes the Isle of Man. Towns. Rivers, mountains, railroads, battle sites, and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and territorial boundaries are outlined in color. Additionally, several battlegrounds are marked, including the sites for the War of the Roses at Northampton in 1460, the First English Civil War in Newbury from 1642-1546 and the Battle of Solebay in 1672, among others. As this map was issued, both England and Wales were in the midst of the Industrial ... moreRevolution during which much of the rural agricultural population relocated to urban centers. In 1819 the Bank of England introduced a £20,000 prize for anyone who could devise a means to print unforgeable notes. The American inventors J

An appealing decorative title cartouche appears in the upper left quadrant depicting maritime cargo being loaded unloaded from a busy harbor– possibly Bristol? Bowles and Carver issued their'one-sheet' maps series from approximately 1792 to 1801. The series consisted of independent issue maps of nearly every part of the world, prepared either in broadside, wall, or case formats, upon request. Some of the maps in this series are highly sought after and historically important, however, most examples appear on the market with some regularity. This map, curiously, is the exception, as we have been able to identify no other examples in either private or institutional collections and no auction record whatsoever. Given the title, New one-sheet Map of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland' we can assume that this is indeed a'New' map, drawn to reflect the January 1801 merger of the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland in to a new singular'United Kingdom' At the time this was a popular union and strongly supported by the mostly Catholic Irish population, however,
