It is undated but from the late 1800's, this was found with a bunch of maps from Bacon's 1880's map book(which i have also listed) you are considering one map. The map shown, the paper is aprox 18 by 27 inches, with the printed map a bit smaller(as you can see in the pics) i do not have all the maps from this book, only a few, the scale of this is 4 inch to the mile. the paper is thin, and shows some edge wear, zoom in on the pics for good detail. Pieter Van Der(Petrus Kaerius) Worcestershire(Miniature Speed' London: William Humble:1627] A fine genuine antique seventeenth century minature map of Worcestershire with later fine hand-colouring. The map engraved by Pieter van der Keere in c1627. Image size approx. 84mm x 122mm. With text to verso. A generally VG+ clean impression of this'Miniature Speed' map. KEERE. Pieter van der(Petrus Kaerius) Pieter van den Keere was one of a number of refugees who fled from religious persecution in the Low Countries between the years 1570 and 1590. He moved to London in 1584 with his sister who married Jodocus Hondius. Also a refugee there, and through Hondius he undoubtedly learned his skills as an engraver and cartographer. In the course of a long working life ... morehe engraved a large number of individual maps for prominent cartographers of the day but he also produced an Atlas of the Netherlands(1617-22) and county maps of the British Isles which have become known as Miniature Speeds, a misnomer which calls for some explanation. In about 1599 he engraved plates for 44 maps of the English and Welsh counties. The regions of Scotland and the Irish provinces. The English maps were based on Saxton, the Scottish on Ortelius and the Irish on the famous map by Boazio. These maps were not published at once in book form but there is evidence which suggests a date of issue(in Amsterdam) between 1605 and 1610 although at least one authority believes they existed only in proof form until 1617 when Willem Blaeu issued them with a Latin edition of Camden's Britannia. At this stage two maps were added. One of the British Isles and the other of Yorkshire, the latter derived from Saxton. To confuse things further the title page of this edition is signed'Guilielmus noster Janssonius' which is the Latinized form of Blaeu's name commonly used up to 1619. ISLE OF WIGHT J.Blaeu c1645 Superb detail. ISLE OF WIGHT(Vectis Insula) Description Decorative title cartouche surrounded by Stags and Water Fowl. Arms of England. Four shields bearing Coats of Arms. Several ships in full sail adorn the sea. The engraved size approx. 390 x 500mm. with wide margins and normal centre fold. Renowned in the seventeenth century the name of BLAEU was known as the foremost mapmakers of their time. Not only in their native Holland but stretching into most of Europe and even further where magnificent specimens of their atlases were being sent as lavish gifts to Oriental rulers etc. The majority of Blaeu’s maps have elaborate title cartouches usually displaying some characteristic of the county and an ornate scale of miles. And generally most of Blaeu's maps are adorned with large shields bearing coats of arms ... moreof the nobility of the county, and on coastal counties galleons or ships usually adorn the sea. This is a superb and scarce facsimile from his atlas published in 1645 and is most appealing and gives the great feeling of antiquity. It has been said that a map by Blaeu. Possibly more than that of any other mapmaker, makes one grasp how enjoyable the skill of mapmaking can be, his meticulous execution makes these maps a delight to own. These superb maps. When mounted and framed, make very attractive items of history, adorn any wall and make excellent conversation pieces. Very Rare Philips Tape Indicator Map of London c1850 Hand Coloured Lithograph Here we have a very rare copy of the Philips Tape Indicator Map of London c1850. This is a hand coloured lithograph map of London mounted on Linen with original colour and was published by George Philips& Son. It Includes an alphabetical list of streets, public buildings, railways, etc; also underground& electric railways, bus and tram-car routes. This map is currently advertised on the net for £360. Condition: one tear between sections. See pictures. There are no age marks to the map. An old repair has been done using linen tape to the rear or the street list booklet, a very old name has been written on the back of the map which has now faded somewhat. What is quite rare apart from the map and its condition is that the original tape measure is still ... morepresent, these were often removed and lost. Several coats of arms add to the visual appeal and sailing ships adorn the sea area. Presented in its original uncoloured format but if preferred can be supplied with attractive later hand colour. Professionally applied to the original pattern at extra cost(please email) This is a scarce blank verso edition therefore devoid of the bleedthrough of text which is often seen. Please scroll right down for further images. Willem Janzoon Blaeu(1571-1638) founded the Blaeu publishing company which dominated the mapmaking industry of 17th century Netherlands. His sons Joan(Johannes) and Cornelius continued the family business after Willem's death in 1638. Their greatest achievement was perhaps the famous atlas"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive. Atlas Novus" which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635- 1662. The print shop and warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1672 and Willem's last son died the following year. 1720 Decorative Bowen Road Map of Somerset Roads
1720 Bowen Road Map- Somersetshire Emanuel Bowen was one of three pre-eminent cartographers who attempted to build on the popularity of the first-ever road strip atlas of John Ogilby published in 1675. These three atlases by Bowen. Senex and Gardner were published between 1719 and 1720 but Bowen's'Britannia Depicta' proved to be the most successful and went into many editions. This elegant map from the first edition of 1720 is typical of the series. The map follows the roads from Bridgewater through Willet. Dulverton, into Devonshire. There are many decorative details, showing the small villages, churches, houses, hills, and rivers, that an 18th century traveller would pass by along the route. The map has several compass roses, and the coats of arms of Devizes and Torrington. There are charming descriptions of the towns in the ... moremargins. Antique Map of Middlesex - 1700s (?)
This is an old map of Middlesex on a complete page taken from an ancient map book. The text on the reverse gives historical data about the county. The map itself has been hand coloured and the item is in good condition. There is no date but an appropriate expert could probably date it from the information given in the text on both sides of the page. Based on some of my other maps. And the fact that the text uses the old form for the letter's' I would guess it was 18th century. The map measures 5 inches by 6 inches and the entire page about 10 inches by 7 inches.
