HEREFORD ATLAS MAP POSTCARD OLD OLDE ENGLAND BRITAIN U.K. ARTIST CARTOGRAPHER: JOHN SPEED FROM: THE THEATRE OF THE EMPIRE OF GREAT BRITAINE(1611) ON BACK ... moreOF POSTCARD: HEREFORD A cathedral town on the River Wye. Hereford is now known as the home of the medieval world map. Speed omits the cider-making for which the city and the county were renowned in his era, but at the foot of the map, the single tree- scaled far above the actual size- may hint at that distinction. UNUSED MODERN CHROME c. 2007 REPRODUCTION NON-LINEN ART POST CARD POSTCARD APPROX. SIZE OF CARD: 6.5" X 4.75" SHIPPING AND HANDLING: FREE IN UNITED STATES; $2 WORLDWIDE With the publication of The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine in 1611. John Speed launched Britain into the modern era of mapmaking. Speed(1552- 1629) was an antiquarian who helped preserve many legends about britain's history, but his unique maps are his chief legacy. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. If so, the maps were then edited by Speed to give them a unified style. The streets are shown in plan, and the principal buildings are drawn in elevation: the result resembles an aerial view. On most of his maps. Speed provides a key to the streets and the main buildings. In some cases, the u

Robert Morden Antique map Somersetshire Somerset dated 1695
An antique map of Somersetshire by Robert Morden dated 1695. The date(1695) looks to have been added at a later date and I am told that these early maps weren't dated so the age could be genuine.I must add that I'm not an expert on maps so please study the photographs. Photo 2 shows the map from the back and held up to the light. Holding the map up to the light I can see. What looks like, faint grid lines almost like a watermark. These lines cannot be seen when laid down on a surface. There is a small nick out of the paper just West of Martock. Approx 2mm x 3mm. Paper Size = 17" x 15" 43cm x 38cm) I am always happy to answer any question concerning this item or any other of my listings. I’ll do my best to reply as soon as possible. Check out my! I would like collection within 7 days of end of auction so if there is a problem please write to let me know immediately. I do not have a BIN(buy it now) price. Feedback. Please accept my apologies. In advance, as I no longer give feedback. This has come about since Ebay decided to adopt the unfair system of not allowing sellers to give negative feedback, even if it is deserved. It is totally wrong that sellers are unable to warn others that they could be dealing with potentially dodgy customers whereas buyers have the privilege in this matter. I have been let down more times in the past few months since this new system came into practice than I had in the previous 5 years of dealing on Ebay. I have on several occasions written to Ebay but with no sensible reply. I would urge just minded Sellers and Buyers to also write in the hope that we can again return to the old. Non-discriminatory system. Many thanks for taking the time to read this passage.

COUNTY MAPS BY ROBERT MORDEN (c.1650-1703) THE COUNTY OF WARWICKSHIRE.
The perfect Present for those with a love of local History. The County of Warwickshire by Robert Morden A Facsimile copy of an original County Map by Robert Morden in excellent condition. The map is 45.5cm x 38cm and comes unframed The perfect Present for those with a love of local History. A Little Bit About Robert Morden(c.1650-1703) was a British bookseller, publisher, and maker of maps and globes. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His cartographical output was large and varied. His best known maps are those of South Wales, North Wales and the English Counties first published in a new edition of Camden's"Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and ... more1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. Each had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names[1] Morden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens. In 1695 he published a map of Scotland. It is in parts(e.g. Skye and the Western Isles) essentially a copy of the 1654 map done by Robert Gordon of Straloch, published by Joan Blaeu; other parts show evidence of more accurate cartography. He published a new map of the Tamil homeland, Coylot Wanees Country, in 17th century Ceylon island. He is also known for several very rare early maps of the British colonies in North America, which are now among the earliest and most sought after maps for collectors of old American maps. He also produced a series of miniature maps of the world, which appeared in both playing card format and in a series of atlases, including his Atlas Terrestris and Geography Anatomiz'd, beginning in 1687 Powered by

Original 1892 map of the Brightlingsea area of Essex
Normal 0 Normal 0 Original 1892(the printed date is 1882 but there is an indented OS crest saying'Sep 92' regional map/chart of the Brightlingsea area of Essex. It shows areas including Wivenhoe. East Donyland, Fingringhoe, Langenhoe Marsh, Pyefleet Channel, River Colne, Brightlinsea'Limb of the Cinque Port Liberty of Sandwich' The map is printed on thick paper and the condition is good overall. It is a bit grubby and does show its age. Mainly due to the size of it. It is also partly due to this that there are numerous tears around the edges of the map- one to the right edge of 6cm, one to the bottom edge of 15.5cm which is mostly reinforced with matt selotape, one to the top edge of 14cm also reinforced with matt selotape, as well as the area of the top left corner being jagged and with a part missing of 6cm width at worst ... moreand 19cm high- this is just in the blank section around the edge so does not quite interfere with the map itself. It has the stamp of'E Stanford' of Charing Cross, OS'sole agent' to the bottom right hand corner. Though it is rather battered in places it is still a very interesting map/ sea chart of the area and will look great once it is reinforced. Size: 102.4 x 69.6 cm Thanks for looking and please see my other many and varied items. including maps of Nottinghamshire. Long Eaton, Alfreton, Balderton, Matlock, Worthing, Dulwich(London) Shrewsbury, Lake District. If you are in Nottingham. 1598 (1614) Münster (Petri) BRAUN & HOGENBERG LONDON Iconic Woodcut City View
Londinum Feracis: Ang. Met 37.5 cm x 24 cm woodcut. 42.5 cm x 35.5 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Sebastian Heinrich Petri, Basel, woodblock carved in 1598, printed 1614 We are pleased to offer this scarce original city prospect/map of London(Howgego#6) from the 1614 edition of the Cosmographia of(1488-1552) Widely considered one of the most influential publications of the 16th century with 24 editions published over more than a century. The map is of course a close copy of the famous Braun and Hogenberg of London first published in 1572 and itself derived from a 1559 wall map commissioned by the Hanseatic League of which only three of the original 15 sheets survive today. Remarkably. Despite being slightly smaller than the Braun and Hogenberg Civitates copperplate map and being executed as a woodcut. The map includes a similar level ... moreof detail as the Braun and Hogenberg plate, a considerable achievement given the medium of the woodcut. Cosmographia featured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic events. But it was also so successful because of its many woodcut maps, which as we shall see came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1570s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. More importantly. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate maps and their ornate engraving work many of the old woodcut maps of the Cosmographia were truthfully rather crude

NORTHUMBERLAND : John Cary Fine Original Hand Coloured, Antique County Map 1809
NORTHUMBERLAND: John Cary Fine Original Hand Coloured. Antique County Map 1809 Description: CARY. John, 1754- 1835) Northumberland. London: Published by John Cary. Circa 1809] A fine highly detailed antique map of Northumberland with fine original handcolour published by John Cary and credited to him at the bottom of the plate. The map printed on hand-made paper with printed title cartouche with compass rose and separate scale of distance. Image size approx. 260mm x 210mm(10.5" x 8.5" with good margins beyond. A VG+ bright clean impression. John Cary(1754- 1835) was a renowned and active map engraver and publisher. Working between 1787 and 1834 in London. Cary’s publications did much to advance the quality and clarity of data presentation on maps. His county maps for Richard Gough’s edition of Camden’s Britannia in 1789 evidenced ... moremuch improved hachuring(shading to show land relief and physical features) when compared with earlier examples– Cary’s hachuring was much less overbearing than that used by other mapmakers at this time and did not obscure map data. Cary’s career really began when he was apprenticed to William Palmer. A noted engraver, in 1770, and he soon gained a reputation as a maker of globes, both terrestrial and celestial, becoming the foremost globe-maker of his day. Under Palmer he also learned the delicate art of engraving that was to stand him in good stead for the rest of his career. He set up his own publishing business c.1783 and, with his understanding of engraving and his interest in the country’s growing transport networks at this time, his map publications were well received. Cary was also to foster the talent of later mapmakers. Aaron Arrowsmith worked for Cary and did much of the research(making measurements and producing drawings) for Cary’s 1784 publication. Great Post-Roads Between London& Falmouth. This relatively early and scarce work illustrates Cary’s interest in the transport network. Many of his later atlases were directed at the traveller and his works were o

Original 1882 map of the Lake District - areas between Grasmere, Borrowdale etc
Normal 0 Normal 0 Original 1882 regional map of the Lake District areas between Grasmere and Borrowdale. It shows marked areas including Langdale Combe. Greenup Edge, Seatoller, Stonethwaite Fell, Rosthwaite Fell, Wythburn, Blea Tarn, Easdale Beck, Goody Bridge inbetween. The map is printed on thick paper and the condition is good overall. It is a bit grubby and does show its age. Mainly due to the size of it. It is also partly due to this that there are two tears to the left edge, one of 2cm, one of 3cm, as well as a piece missing of 5.5cm width- these are in the blank section around the edge so do not interfere with the map itself. It previously belonged to Nottingham Trent University and has their purple stamp along the top. Lastly, there is a big tear of 28.7 cm up the middle of the map from the bottom edge- this has been reinforced with ... morematt selotape and actually does not detract much from the map at all. Size: 98.5 x 68.8 cm Thanks for looking and please see my other many and varied items. including maps of Nottinghamshire. Long Eaton, Alfreton, Balderton, Matlock, Banbury, Worthing, Dulwich(London) Shrewsbury, Brightlingsea. If you are in Nottingham. You can always pick up from me or I can drop off to you, if you buy between 20th April and end of May, as I will be in Nottingham. After this time I will be in the Birkenhead area. Apologies for the cost of postage- Royal Mail have just changed their prices significantly- more than doubling what the price was before!
