Description: This is an uncommon and detailed 1763 Italian issue map of the Great Lakes and adjacent territories. The map covers all five of the Great Lakes although Lake Superior is only partially represented. It extends northwards well beyond Lake Superior. Southwards as far as Fort Dequesne(Fort Pitt, Forks of the Ohio) westwards to Green Bay, and eastwards to include parts of New Jersey. The map identifies geographical features, various rivers, trading post, and fortifications. American Indian tribes are identified with curious Italianized names such as the'Irocchesi' and'Algonquini' The site of Niagara Falls is identified. This map was issued at the close of the ... moreFrench and Indian War. The cartographers seem to have drawn primarily from French sources published during and before the war, hence the identification of Fort DuQuesne, which by this time has been renamed Fort Pitt(Pittsburgh, PA) Another reference to French sources appears in Lake Superior, where two of Count Charlevoix and Nicholas Bellin's fictional islands: I. S. Anna(referencing the count's patron saint) and Pontchartrain(named after the family seat of Charlevoix' s patron, Jean-Frederic Phelypeaux) The borders here defined suggest French dominion extends eastwards beyond the Apalachian Mountains into Pennsylvania- most of this territory was lost to the French during in the 1763 Treaty of Paris which formally ended the war. It is marked"CANADA" and is very nicely hand colored in green, red, and yellow showing"Upper Canada" Lower Canada, New South Wales, Hudson Bay, East Main, Labrador, New Brunswick, Nena Wewhock Indians, Lake Michigan, Dis of Three Rivers, Montreal district and various cities are noted: Boston, Portland, C. Cod, C. Ann, Eastport, Buffalo, Detroit, etc. There is even a"copper mine" noted on the south side of Lake Superior on the American side. The map was issued by the Depot de la Marine in Paris under the supervision of Antoine de Sartine(1729-1801) It was engraved by Petit. The map measures 23" tall. By 15 3/8" wide(58.4 x 39.1 cm) to the neat line. With wide margins. It is blank on the reverse. And entirely suitable for framing. The paper shows no obvious imperfections. Overall. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' A 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. One of his earliest map contributions was to Pierre Charlevoix's'Histoire.de la Nouvelle France' published in 1744, a seminal work in Canadian history and geography This map of Chedabuctou Bay. Nova Scotia comes from from the Charlevoix work and is dated 1744. Then part of Acadia before the English conquest fifteen years later, it shows the entrance to Milford Haven with a fort close to present day Guysborough. This is the earliest obtainable map, preceded only by a 1742 proof noted by Kershaw, to depict the four fictive islands in Lake Superior(Philippeux, Pontchartrain, Maurepas, and St. Anne) islands that nonetheless significantly influenced the structuring of post-Revolutionary War borders between British Canada and the fledgling United States. 1861 United States Coast Survey: Coast of Labrador and Eclipse Bay (Original )
These items were published by A. Hoen& Co. Baltimore for the United States Coast Survey, Washington, D. C. cartographer was Oscar Licher, late State Geologist of South Carolina) and Ledr. A. Murray, USN. Source is the 1861 Annual Report of the Superintendent, United States Coast Survey. Survey conducted in 1860 in Labrador, Canada. VG condition, thin paper that these surveys were printed on, there is minimal toning along the fold lines. From the scarce 1861 edition which had several of the listed maps not published as it was“ deemed inexpedient at the present time, for obvious reason, to publish for general circulation. Apparently Labrador was exempt. Also of interest, this is one of the very few Coast Surveys to cover a non U.S. Coastline. Here are 2 maps/surveys on one sheet and a series of images of a solar eclipse on the other( the ... morereason for the USCS trip in the first place) The bay was, in fact, so named by the USCS expedition which visited the harbor in July, 1860 to observe a total eclipse of the sun. They were fortunate enough to see the eclipse as the weather was generally lousy. It was noted that calms were of short duration, seldom lasting more than a day. The gales were frequent and very violent; that experience by the( ship) Bibb, lasted three days and was heaviest gale experience on the Coast. A scare survey and an interesting subject. Cartographically this map is essentially an elaboration upon the 1688 Nolin/Coronelli map, Partie Occidentale du Canada ou ... morede la Nouvelle France. Coronelli was particularly fascinated with the Great Lakes region and this map includes numerous updates and elaborations. The several explorers who influenced this map are La Salle, Hennepin, Marquette, Jolliet, Dablon, and Allouez, among others. The traces of their passage can be found throughout. Baron de Lahontan, was an adventurer, explorer and author who travelled in Canada(Nouvelle France) in the late 1600's and had his memoirs published as'Nouveaux Voyages. dans L'Amerique Septentrionale' by the Honore Brothers in The Hague in 1703. These contain often exaggerated stories of his exploits but they are invaluable for several reasons: he was the first European writer to show sympathy with the native people and predict the eventual fall of New France, and his drawings of native life are some of the earliest we have. This engraving is from'Nouveaux Voyages' and shows a very early depiction of native Indian smbols from the various tribes living around the Great Lakes. An important early piece of Canadiana. This is a really great map of Canada by Weber Costello. This was from my kids old school and when they consolidated they sold off a lot of this type of stuff. This is the last one that I have of the maps.
