This map is from the book Our Western Empire or the New West Beyond the Mississippi by L.P. Brockett. A.M. M.D. All known topographical features are detailed but in Alaska. Must was still unexplored. There are almost no cities in Alaska, Sitka being the largest. A"Russian Village" is shown at today’s site of Tyonek. Very few of the mountains are identified. This is 17 years before the Gold Rush. To the east is labeled"British Possessions" In Manitoba. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 ... morein 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. According to Worldcat.org only one other 1890 enlarged business atlas exists and it is held at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Size/ Format In millimetres(and inches) Sheet: 364 x 262(14¼" X 10 ¼" Margins range from 14mm- 26mm(½" 1" The maps are all printed on one integral sheet with a fold in the center. This fold becomes nearly invisible when the map is laid flat. If the map is framed. The fold becomes completely invisible unless inspected very closely. Condition The maps are in very good condition. The colors are bright and there is almost no age-toning. There is an occasional spot or unobtrusive mark in the margins of a few of the ... moremaps. The scanned images are un-edited(except for size) and are of the actual map you will receive. I've noticed that some of the scans look a little blurry or grainy. This is a 1892 Railroad map of Manitoba. Canada. It is genuine, not a copy or reprint. Long considered the most beautiful of all 19th Century Railroad maps; this is the best of the best. You are looking at a map from Walker’s International Atlas. The map covers the whole of Manitoba as it was in 1892. The maps themselves were the product of George Cram. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. Walker took the base Cram’s maps and added hand colored lithography, giving a light Easter egg pastel richness that is eye stopping in expression and exact detail. We have acquired another copy from 1896. Worldcat.org does not list any 1892 editions. This means that the historical societies. The pictures are of a Buddhist Temple in Siam and the Vatican Library. Rome. I purchased this at auction and it was being sold by an antique dealer. He said all the maps being sold were from the late 1800's to early 1900's at the latest. The bottom left corner says Rand, McNally, Co. Engr's, Chicago.
