1896 Wide Date, Portrait 2, Small "96", Newfoundland 20 Twenty Cents AU+
1896 WD. Por.2, Sm. 96" NFLD 20 Cents which, in my opinion, grades AU55. This coin is well struck and, with the exception of a few contact bag marks, is problem-free. It is an extremely nice example of the scarcest of these three varieties, with its light, golden toning covering brilliant and lustrous surfaces. Note: For comparison purposes, I have also included photos from the Portrait 2, Small"96" Narrow Date and the Portrait 1, Large"96" varieties, in the last two positions respectively. Finally as a personal note; It is thought by some collectors and dealers that there also exists a Portrait 1, Small"96" and a Portrait 2, Large"96" varieties but in 7 years of looking for these variations, I have never seen a single example, in any condition, of either variety. I have seen several examples that ... morewere supposed to be from these two varieties but in every instance, they were incorrectly identified! 1882 H Re-Engraved, Closed "D", Newfoundland 50 Fifty Cents Fine
1882 H Re-Engraved. Closed"D" Last"D" in the word"NEWFOUNDLAND" NFLD 50 Cents which, in my opinion, grades F12. This coin is well struck and problem-free, without any major surface marks or rim nicks. In spite of the heavy circulation that this coin has seen, it is still a decent example of this very rare and important variety. Nearly all of the 1882 H 50 Cent coins are found to have the last"D" in the word"NEWFOUNDLAND" struck with an open bottom, which seems to give this letter a stylistic appearance. However, not all of these coins were struck with this type of"D" There is a very small number, from this mintage, which were apparently struck with a Completed Letter"D" Some of the examples from this scarce variety, exhibit definite signs of having been modified, which ... morewould imply that these changes came after the initial production of these coins. It is also possible that these were minted first and the Reverse production die was slightly damaged at this location, or it might have been an entirely different die used for this group of coins! In any event, it should evoke many interesting debates on this subject! Note: For comparison purposes, I have also included a more detailed photo of a 2nd Closed"D" which exhibits apparent signs of Re-engraving and finally, the last photo in this group, is from one of the more common Open"D" varieties. 1894 "Beads" (Dots), Newfoundland 20 Twenty Cents F+ (5)
1894"Beads" NFLD 20 Cents which, I believe, grades F15. This coin is well struck but it does have a number of issues which should be noted. It has been cleaned and their are some fine hairlines associated with this and also, there is a light dent in front of the Queen's neck. In spite of these problems, it is an interesting variety which has"Beads" Dots) suspended from the Queen's hair at the back of her neck. This variety is also generally known to have the numbers"8" 9" Repunched and the Letter"S" in"CENTS" has been Re-engraved but they are difficult to recognize on this example because of the considerable wear.
