Dated 1860 Sheet measures 12.5" x 15" Samuel Augustus ... moreMitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps, many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior. Entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. The younger Mitchell became as prominent as his father and published atlases well into the late 1880s. Fine condition on great paper. Housed in mylar. See photo.

It is from Morse and Gaston's Diamond Atlas. Published in New York by Samuel Gaston. 1857. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. It is by Samuel Gaston and Sidney Morse, the brother of Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. Their father was Jedidiah Morse, also a mapmaker and publisher in New York. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pic. Overall, a nice antique miniature map that would frame up nicely! Size: The map image measures approximately 5 by 6 inches(12x15cm) on a 6 by 7 1/4" 15x18cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. There are a few minor spots around the margin as seen in the pics. Dated 1860 Sheet measures 12.5" x 15" Samuel Augustus ... moreMitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps, many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior. Entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. Walker took the base Cram’s maps and added hand colored lithography, giving an Easter egg pastel richness that are eye stopping in expression and exact detail. We have heard about a few later and one earlier than 1896. Worldcat.org shows that a few pages. I.e. Maps from the 1896 edition, this one, are at the University of Chicago and the Detroit Public Library. This means that the historical societies, reference libraries, ... morerailroad collections, and museums have never seen these or are unaware of their existence and the importance these maps made on the future of Railroad maps in the United States and Canada. Condition: The map is in Good condition with overall tonal aging and original hand color as issued with a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pic. There is some darkening and light handling around the edges and a few random spots as expected. There are a two repairs on the left side near the centerfold of lost paper from insect damage. Margin only not affecting map, as can be seen in the main pic. In the event, three innocent people were killed after what has been called ever since a“riot” In his excellent book James Jackson establishes that the riot never actually happened and there was no mob present when the soldiers opened fire. Jackson’s proof is supported by affidavits presented to a“stacked” grand jury which exonerated all of the soldiers. Their officers and the magistrates who called initiated the event. The grand jury was composed of a majority of recently arrived English-speaking Protestant farmers notwithstanding the three victims were Catholic French Canadians. It covers from the North Georgian Islands to the United States including Greenland. Iceland and Russian Territories of what is now Alaska. Upper Canada(Ontario) Lower Canada(Quebec) Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland are depicted in detail. The boundary settled in 1825 between Canada and the Russian Territories is noted here. It also shows all the Great Lakes Ontario, Erie, Superior, Michigan and Huron. This map is from a very rare 1865 illustrated textbook entitled"National Geographical Series: Revised Edition. An Improved System of Geography Designed for Schools, Academies and Seminaries By Francis McNally” published by A. S. Barnes and Co. 111 and 113 William Street, New York. Maps are full color- very attractive and interesting! This map has Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, etc. on one side and miscellaneous geography lessons on the flip side. Pages are about 11 7/8 inches by 9 ¾ inches. The pages have quite a few age spots and almost all have small rectangles of paper missing from the margin where the pages were bound, but does not affect the viewing ... morearea. See pictures. All pages are slightly yellowed from age but map colors are bright and clear. Maps may have small dog-eared corners or small pieces of corners missing. Also edges are no longer razor sharp. See individual pictures. This page has some small rust spots and one rust spot about 3/8 inch round. Every map has a page number in one margin. Partie de la Nouvelle Bretagne 56 cm x 47.5 cm lithograph. 72 cm x 54 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Brussels, 1827 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of what is now the of southern in Canada compiled and published by the brilliant Belgian geographer Philippe Vandermaelen(1795-1869) Working from Hudson's Bay Company charts. It is indisputable that Vandermaelen's maps of these remote areas of Canada were the most detailed general atlas maps of the region yet published. The map was issued for his monumental Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 ... moremeters in diameter. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 in 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. The income from the atlas as well as a significant inheritance enabled Vandermaelen to found the Brussels Geographic Institute along the Chaussée de Gand and Charleroi Canal(along with two adjacent and rather opulent homes for Vandermaelen and his brother) the library of which housed the only example of the giant globe ever constructed from the plates of the atlas. Employing a team of draughtsmen, lithographers and geographers Vandermaelen's Institute continued producing maps of all types throughout his life- nearly 5000 published maps in all. Discerning collectors have in recent years come to appreciate Vandermaelen's importance as a visionary geographer- a worthy follower of Mercator and Ortelius" as his biographer Eugene Gilbert de Cauwer put it- as well as the beauty

This is an 1896 Railroad map of Northwestern Ontario. Canada. It is genuine, not a copy or reprint. Long considered the most beautiful of all 19th Century Railroad maps; this is the best of the best. You are looking at a map from Walker’s International Atlas. The map covers the whole of Northwest Ontario. As it was in 1896. The maps themselves were the product of George Cram. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. Walker took the base Cram’s maps and added hand colored lithography, giving an Easter egg pastel richness that are eye stopping in expression and exact detail. We have heard about a few later and one earlier than 1896. Worldcat.org shows that a few pages. I.e. Maps from the 1896 edition, this one, are at the University of Chicago and the Detroit Public Library. This means that the historical societies, reference libraries, ... morerailroad collections, and museums have never seen these or are unaware of their existence and the importance these maps made on the future of Railroad maps in the United States and Canada. Possibly the title has caused it to be overlooked. Nowhere is to be found that this is a Railroad atlas by its title. It would fall through the cracks and be filed under the numerous names of regular atlases so popular during this time period. Each map measures 17 1/2 X 25 inches. The maps in this listing are in near excellent condition. With only very minor handling. Truly this is an investment to cherish. One could frame them and sell at a later date, or one could make copies and recover the investment in short order. With exceptionally bright colors. And crisp, bright paper, these maps are in excellent condition and are superior to all other atlases of this time period. This finely detailed map shows lakes and rivers, cities and towns, regions, railroads, and topographical marks. A fine addition to any collection!
