As with all the maps I am listing just now. Close examination can show many of the place names have since changed or simply do not exist, many borders and bounderies have been altered. It can be extremley interesting comparing with a modern map to see just how much the world has changed in the last 120 or so years. From humble beginnings in Edinburgh in the early part of the nineteenth century. The Bartholomew firm became the world's pre-eminent publisher of maps and atlases, carrying for many years the ... moretitle of Geographers and Cartographers Royal. Bartholomew maps have served as a benchmark for cartographic detail. Accuracy and variety, covering all areas of the globe, taking in all nature of geographical, topographical, geological, hydrographical, political and statistical detail. Their aesthetic qualities are cleverly balanced, drawing attention to the relevant detail graphically when required, but rarely over-decorating for no good reason. Genuine antique map"Carte Physique et Routiere de La France. De la Suisse" by Adrien Hubert Brue. Map is dated 1831 and published in Paris. Impression is hand colored and printed on sturdy paper with full margins. This attractive map of France and Switzerland shows the roads and routes in 1831 and nice detail of coast lines and mountains. Two insets show the Isle of Corsica and the area around Paris. A delicate seal states"propriete de l'Auteur" This oversize map is in good condition with some foxing and minor ink transfer from folded storage. Jodocus Hondius(1563- 1612) One of the most notable engravers of his time, is known ... morefor his work in association with many of the cartographers and publishers prominent at the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century. In 1604 Hondius bought the plates of Mercator's Atlas which. In spite of its excellence, had not competed successfully with the continuing demand of Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. To meet this competition Hondius added about 40 maps to Mercator's original number and from 1606 published enlarged editions in many languages. Still under Mercator's name but with his own name as publisher. These atlases have become known as the Mercator/Hondius series. The following year the maps were re-engraved in miniature form and issued as a pocket Atlas Minor. After the death of Jodocus Hondius the Elder in 1612. Work on the two atlases, folio and miniature, was carried on by his widow and sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, and eventually in conjunction with Jan Jansson in Amsterdam. In all, from 1606 onwards, nearly 50 editions with increasing numbers of maps with texts in the main European languages were printed. Mapmaker: Paolo Santini( 1729 Venice- Belluno 1793) was a priest of the church of Santa Maria Formosa in Venice and professor of drawing at the public schools of the Jesuits. From the best papers from the time he realized his brother Francis. The famous Universal Atlas. Divided into two volumes and contains 123 cards. Francesco Santini he published between 1776 and 1780. Subsequently, the branches etching of the cards were purchased in 1781 from the press Remondini Bassano reissued the atlas. Cartographer: Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period.
