You are looking at an old map of Nova Scotia. New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island. This was originally out of an atlas book that has extra information in it. The writing on the back of this portion is titled The Bible Verified. I purchased this at auction and it was being sold by an antique dealer. He said all the maps being sold were from the late 1800's to early 1900's at the latest. The label on the plastic cover says 1881-1882. Chicago& NY. 1900. Interesting snapshot of the areas just before the turn of the 20th century. Either map would frame up handsomely for display. Printed on sturdy medium-weight stock- measures approx. 11 x 14.5" Map was bound in on a thin paper strip. So there are no binding perforations at the edge, just residue of the strip. The print does NOT show through from side to side. There is plenty of margin for framing. Each map has a list of the chief cities and a few statistics in the margin. At the time this map was published. For example the entire NW Territory had 906,000 sq. miles but only about 99,000 people! Latitude and longitude ... moremarks. Scale of miles. Towns. Rivers, some topographical marks, railroad lines, Indian reservations. The NW Territories map is especially interesting. As it shows territories that only existed in this configuration briefly and that were subsequently reorganized: Assiniboia earlier referred to the Red River Colony and part of Rupert's Land but in 1882 the District of Assiniboia was created. And that is what appears on this map. In 1905 this District was absorbed into Saskatchewan and Alberta. The District of Athabasca shown here was created in 1992 but ceased to exist in 1905. Parts being absorved into Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Saskatchewan and Alberta as shown here have very different borders today. Changes having occurred just after the turn of the 20th century. And likewise, Manitoba on the other map changed configuration as well. Note: We did not disbind this atlas. Nor do we have the entire atlas. But we do have the front board and title page- see the last photos for reference. CONDITION: Near Fine. Overall light uniform yellowing but no other condition points. Created to illustrate a voyage of exploration and discovery across the world to the Southern Ocean and Pacific region. In the 18th century. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were often sold individually and as part of illustrated travel ... moreaccounts. All of which are now scarce and valuable today. They are much sought after as a visual record of a bygone era and are great conversational items once framed for display. When you stop to consider their age and the fact they are original engraved works of art. It's amazing how affordable they actually are. What is also very interesting is that many of these views were continually re-engraved over time. So that while titles may be identical, in fact the engraved plate may be an entirely different one.
