John Thomson was one of the leading exponents of the Edinburgh school of cartography which reached its zenith between 1800 and 1830. Thomson& his contemporaries such as Pinkerton and Cary redefined European cartography by abandoning such 18th century decorative elements as elaborate title cartouches and fantastic beasts in favour of detail and accuracy. Baron de Lahontan, was an adventurer, explorer and author who travelled in Canada(Nouvelle France) in the late 1600's and had his memoirs published as'Nouveaux Voyages. dans L'Amerique Septentrionale' by the Honore Brothers in The Hague in 1703. These contain often exaggerated stories of his exploits but they are invaluable for several reasons: he was the first European writer to show sympathy with the native people and predict the eventual fall of New France, and his drawings of native life are some of the earliest we have. This engraving is from a 1728 edition of'Nouveaux Voyages' and shows the title page. Here the native warrior is holding a bow in one hand and an arrow aloft in the other. This auction is for an original map of Ontario from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in very nice condition given its age. It is in its original unrestored condition. The colors(all hand colored) are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very readable. The seam is still complete but shows a small tear near the bottom. The inset shows the Canadian Niagra River. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. Baron de Lahontan, was an adventurer, explorer and author who travelled in Canada(Nouvelle France) in the late 1600's and had his memoirs published as'Nouveaux Voyages. dans L'Amerique Septentrionale' by the Honore Brothers in The Hague in 1703. These contain often exaggerated stories of his exploits but they are invaluable for several reasons: he was the first European writer to show sympathy with the native people and predict the eventual fall of New France, and his drawings of native life are some of the earliest we have. 1728 Scarce Lahontan Engraving of Bison Hunt, Crocodile
1728 Lahontan Engraving- Bison Hunt& Crocodile Baron Louis-Armand de Lom d'Arce. The third Baron La Hontan published his'Voyages du Baron de Lahontan dans'L'Amerique Septentrionale' in 1703 and it had a profound effect on geographical perception although much of his journey was probably fictitious. His'Riviere Longue' running west from the Mississippi to the unknown west coast was accepted by none less than Guillaume de L'Isle but is clearly false. This engraving is from the 1728 edition However Lahontan did observe Indian life and practices and this engraving shows a bison hunt. Very interesting original 1689 4 x 5-3/4 inch engraved map of Greenland. Including a substantial section of Arctic Canada with Baffin Island and Labrador, engraved by Alain Manesson Mallet, Paris. Alain Manesson Mallet(1630-1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. He commenced his career as a soldier in the Army of Louis XIV. Rising to Sergeant-Major of Artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. His military engineering and mathematical background led to this position of Mathematics Teacher at the French court. Good condition. Some paper creases, including one into the image at lower right. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. The income from the atlas as well as a significant inheritance enabled Vandermaelen to found the Brussels Geographic Institute along the Chaussée de Gand and Charleroi Canal(along with two adjacent and rather opulent homes for Vandermaelen and his brother) the library of which housed the only example of the giant globe ever constructed from the plates of the atlas. Employing a team of draughtsmen, lithographers and geographers Vandermaelen's Institute continued producing maps of all types throughout his life- nearly 5000 published maps in all. 1728 Lahontan Engraving- Untitled Baron Louis-Armand de Lom d'Arce. The third Baron La Hontan published his'Voyages du Baron de Lahontan dans'L'Amerique Septentrionale' in 1703 and it had a profound effect on geographical perception although much of his journey was probably fictitious. His'Riviere Longue' running west from the Mississippi to the unknown west coast was accepted by none less than Guillaume de L'Isle but is clearly false. This engraving is from the 1728 edition However Lahontan did observe Indian life and practices and this engraving shows various forms of hunting carried out by the Iroquois. These include herds of deer. A bear in a tree, shooting a fox and using a dog to trap birds. The engraving measures 3.5" by 4" Is uncoloured, and is in very good condition. Baron de Lahontan, was an adventurer, explorer and author who travelled in Canada(Nouvelle France) in the late 1600's and had his memoirs published as'Nouveaux Voyages. dans L'Amerique Septentrionale' by the Honore Brothers in The Hague in 1703. These contain often exaggerated stories of his exploits but they are invaluable for several reasons: he was the first European writer to show sympathy with the native people and predict the eventual fall of New France, and his drawings of native life are some of the earliest we have.
