A FINE. ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAP OF MANITOBA Provenance The Victoria Regina Atlas Published Edinburgh& London: W. A.K. Johnston. Ltd. 1906. These are original maps that I removed from the atlas myself. They are all guaranteed to be 102 years old. Cartographer A.K. Johnston Size/ Format Map: 26 cm x 19.5 cm(10.25" x 7.75" Page: 30 c. X 25 cm(12" X 9.75" Condition Very good. The maps are bright and crisp. There is only very slight age-toning to the extreme margins. The maps are clean and free of foxing. Tears, or other compromises. Remarks This 1906 atlas. Finally published a few years after her death, was dedicated to Queen Victoria. Most of the maps had been previously published by W. A.K. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 ... morein 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. The income from the atlas as well as a significant inheritance enabled Vandermaelen to found the Brussels Geographic Institute along the Chaussée de Gand and Charleroi Canal(along with two adjacent and rather opulent homes for Vandermaelen and his brother) the library of which housed the only example of the giant globe ever constructed from the plates of the atlas. Employing a team of draughtsmen, lithographers and geographers Vandermaelen's Institute continued producing maps of all types throughout his life- nearly 5000 published maps in all. Discerning collectors have in recent years come to appreciate Vandermaelen's importance as a visionary geographer- a worthy follower of Mercator and Ortelius" as his biographer Eugene Gilbert de Cauwer put it- as well as the beauty and historical importance of the Atlas Universel maps. The last one we saw in auction ran over $1400.00. And worldcat.org shows only one of these in the major libraries. and it is a 1878 edition. Oregon) northwards past Vancouver Island as far the northwestern top of the Baie de Clonard(The Queen Charlotte Islands or Haida Gwaii) The cartography here may be a little hard to understand for most casual observers due Perouse’s use of archaic French ... morelanguage place names and well as a number of major errors. Perouse, like Cook, entirely missed the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, consequently Vancouver Island is erroneously attached to the mainland. Nonetheless, many of the sites visited by early explorers, including the Nootka Sound, the Bay of St. Louis(Quatsino Sound) Pointe Boisee(Cape Cook) Mont Fleurieu(Silverthrone Mountain) Cape Fleurieu(Goose Island) Cap Hector(Cape St. James) and many others are noted. Cartographically Perouse’s mapping of this region, though still quite incomplete, is a major advancement over the work of Cook who after leaving Nootka Sound was forced offshore by stormed and skipped much of the coast until he reached Alaska near Sitka. This is thus the first chart to map the British Columbia coastline between 49°34' and 57°. In its day the importance of this chart went largely unknown for, though the survey work and original engraving date to 1786, the atlas of La Perouse’s discoveries was not officially published until 1798, by which time other more advances mappings of the region had reached the mainstream. Bellin originally prepared this map to illustrate Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix's Histoire et description generale de la Nouvelle France. It was engraved by Desbruslins Fils of Paris. Charlevoix's history thus proved exceptionally influential as one of the most comprehensive works on North America predating the French and Indian War. Copies of the Histoire et description generale were to be found in the libraries of many 18th century luminaries, including Voltaire, Franklin, and Jefferson. Jefferson especially admired Charlevoix work, calling it'a particularly useful species of reading' and no doubt influenced his decision to pursue the historic 1802 Louisiana Purchase, possibly the most significant event in the post-colonial history of North America.
