The legend key identifies routes of prominent explorers, including Davis, Baffin, Franklin, Kane, Nordenskjöld, Peary, and Nansen. The text labels two explorations under way when the map was printed: 1] Sverdrup on the north coast of Greenland and[2] Peary in Smith Sound on his way to the North Pole. The map labels a large"unexplored" area and shows the limit of the ice pack. The coverage area includes Spitzbergen. Martin Miller, Chicago, Illinois, and is dated 1899— a very active time for Arctic explorations. Near the end of the 19th century. Explorers regarded the North Pole as the last prize in the Northern Hemisphere, and the quest for the Pole turned into an international race with teams from Britain, Norway and America vying for the distinction of reaching it first. Robert Peary, a Commander in the U.S. Navy, made his first attempt to reach the Pole in 1893, six years before this map was printed. Baron de Lahontan, was an adventurer, explorer and author who travelled in Canada(Nouvelle France) in the late 1600's and had his memoirs published as'Nouveaux Voyages. dans L'Amerique Septentrionale' by the Honore Brothers in The Hague in 1703. These contain often exaggerated stories of his exploits but they are invaluable for several reasons: he was the first European writer to show sympathy with the native people and predict the eventual fall of New France, and his drawings of native life are some of the earliest we have. This engraving is from'Nouveaux Voyages' and shows a very early depiction of a dance from one of the various tribes living around the Great Lakes. This suggests that it lasted from midday until sunset. 1757 Bellin Map- Plan de la Ville de Quebec J.N. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' A 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. One of his earliest map contributions was to Pierre Charlevoix's'Histoire.de la Nouvelle France' published in 1744, a seminal work in Canadian history and geography This map of Quebec City comes from" Histoire" but is virtually the same as the one in the Charlevoix work and is unusual in that it contains no date. The detail is excellent with the heavily fortified upper town(Haute Ville) in a near impregnable position and only the daring of Wolfe fifteen years later ... moreallowed it to be captured. The undefended lower town(Basse Ville) shows a heavy concentration of housing. There is a comprehensive legend on the right. this map was to remain virtually unchanged through all of Bellin's later publications. The map measures 8" by 11" with several folds(as issued) Has outline hand colouring, and is in very good condition. The map is guaranteed to be over 250 years old. This is a tastefully colored map of New England and Part of Canada. Extending east to Newfoundland, with a large inset map of the Great Lakes. There is an exorbitant amount of detail with regard to rivers, lakes, and the locations of towns, forts, and Native American tribes. Arguably the most important feature of the map is the prominent insert of the Great Lakes based upon Bellin’s map(1744) Like Bellin’s map, the Vaugondy ... morefamily included the three fictitious islands in Lake Superior, I. The map folds accordian-style revealing panoramic view following the Great Lakes waterway from Goat Island(Niagara Falls) to the city of Quebec. The panorama illustrates both Canadian and US communities along the shoreline. The panorama was illustrated by Alfred R. Waud of Boston. The map is printed on several sheets. Which when joined measure about 11 feet in length. It's about 7 1/2 inches wide. The map folds into a hardcover binding, measuring 7 1/2" tall by 4" wide by 1/4" thick. This example of the chart was published in the 1828 edition of Franklin's First Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea. In the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22 which was published concurrently with the account of his second expedition of 1825-1827; the plate is unchaged from its first publication in 1823 other than the date below neatline. The survey is in large part the work of Midshipmpan(1797-1821) ... morewho along with ten of the original party of twenty did not survive the trek. Poorly planned and inadequately provisioned. The journey recorded on the chart is of unquestionable historic importance but also a deadly debacle that almost certainly involved cannibalism by some of the survivors on the return journey. Nevertheless, his(admittedly compelling) account made Franklin famous as"the man who ate his boots" on the return journey although the events on this journey certainly were a harbinger of his final Arctic command ending in the horror of 1848 when Franklin's crews from HMS Erebus and HMS Terror began butchering and eating their comrades. Antique 1890 "In & About The Queen City Of The West" Toronto Pictorial Souvenir
This is an antique pictorial souvenir of Toronto. Canada entitled" In And About The Queen City Of The West" It was published by James Acton, Publisher and printed by R. G. McLean in 1890. The front cover reads"City of Toronto Souvenir" and below that in fine print is"Jas. Acton, Publisher" Also on the top right corner, someone wrote"Comp. compliments? M.D.K. Excluding the covers there are twenty-four pages(counting front and back) and 39 pictures. The only advertisement is a seal on the back cover for The T. Eaton Co. which reads"The T. Eaton Co. Ltd. Toronto" and inside that is"Main Entrance 190 Yonge St. At that time, they were the largest department store retailer in Toronto. The first picture has the New Union Depot and the County Courthouse on the left side and on the right side is a ... morepicture of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Toronto Canoe Club, Argonaut Rowing Club and the Water Front. We could not photograph all of the pictures but to summarize, the book has pictures of street scenes, colleges and schools, churches, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Humber River and a"Bird's Eye View of Toronto" The book measures 9-1/8" wide x 5-3/4" tall. It has the usual browning due to aging, some tears on the front and back covers as well as the tops of the first two pages, a small hole on the back cover and last page and one of the strands of the cord is frayed; however, there does not appear to be much fading and it is still very legible. Please enlarge the pictures to determine the overall condition. This would be a nice addition to your collection or for someone who would like to see what Toronto looked like in 1890.
