Canadian Propaganda map. Shows all railroads. Map may show projected railroads. Look closely at the enlarged scans. They show the routes as it was in 1882. Note also the large type across map that states, Vast region of excellent farming land. The map measures 21 X 15 inches. Rand McNally was known for printing maps using the latest surveys. We have shown the scans of the map and a close up to get a great idea of the beauty and workmanship that went into the detailed engraving along with the colors not found on modern maps. Would look fantastic framed under glass. Imagine this map displayed in a professionals waiting room. A restaurant, or railroad museum. Shadows and blurry edges are my scanner. Not the map. Now we specialize in rare Railroad maps of Museum quality so are no strangers to having rare editions. We have previously had an 1882 edition of the Rand McNally Business Atlas, possibly the last one known to exist) and can attest that the maps from this atlas, known as the"Indexed Atlas" are similar, so if this proves to be an 1882 atlas you have previously bought an 1882 Railroad map from us, then you already have this map. However, we are still not sure of what we have here. We have sold out of our previous holdings and have nothing left to compare these maps with and to add more problems, there appears to be no more 1882 Business atlases around. So we have included a scan of the cover of this atlas and the index page which is dated. Copies of both the index page and the cover, printed out at letter size will be included with the map, upon request. Further research allows us to make a guess. Baron de Lahontan, was an adventurer, explorer and author who travelled in Canada(Nouvelle France) in the late 1600's and had his memoirs published as'Nouveaux Voyages. dans L'Amerique Septentrionale' by the Honore Brothers in The Hague in 1703. These contain often exaggerated stories of his exploits but they are invaluable for several reasons: he was the first European writer to show sympathy with the native people and predict the eventual fall of New France, and his drawings of native life are some of the earliest we have. Covers mildly worn at extremities and spine chipped at head and foot and hinges cracked, otherwise a very good map in very original condition. Worldcat only locates eleven copies of this rare map which shows the soon to be completed Canadian Pacific Railway. The map was engraved and printed in Edinburgh by J. Bartholomew and was published by the Dawson Brothers in Montreal. Edward Mohun"arrived in Victoria in June of 1862. He was married to Emmeline ... moreJane Newton(widow of W.H. Newton) in New Westminster in 1878. From 1863-1871 he worked as a surveyor throughout Vancouver Island. The Okanagan, Fraser Valley and Haida Gwaii. In 1871 and 1872 he was a the Canadian Pacific Railway Divisional Engineer of the"H Party" in charge of surveying the Yellowhead and Eagle Pass. Mohun was appointed as a surveyor to the Joint Indian Reserve Commission in 1876. He surveyed reserve allotments throughout Vancouver Island and the coastal areas. In 1884, with the direction of the Honourable W. Smithe, Chief Commissioner of Lands and works, Mohun created a map of the Province of British Columbia" Federal and Provincial Collections of Minutes of Decision, Correspondence, and Sketches Online) The covers were produced by M.W. Description: A fine example of Robert de Vaugondy's 1778 map of former French dominions in Canada and in the vicinity of the Great Lakes at the outset of the American Revolutionary War. Essentially two maps on a single sheet. The primary map covers the Gulf of St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence River, and surrounding territories including Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, as well as parts of Quebec, Ontario, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The secondary map, dominated the lower left quadrant, detailed the Great Lakes, or as the map defines them'Les Lacs du Canada' Although initially issued in 1755, the ... morepresent map is an updated edition dating to 1778 which has been re-engraved to reflect the outcome of the French and Indian War. The secondary map roughly follows the 1744 map of French cartographer Nicolas Bellin in detailing the Great Lakes and surrounding territories; however, it does extend significantly westward into the lands of the Sioux and the rivers surrounding the Lake of the Woods- no doubt a response to additional French information gleaned from fur traders in the region. Vaugondy's influence on French cartography was significant and this became the standard template for the mapping of this region for roughly 50 years from its original publication. The present example is the 4th state of this map, the last to be issued directly by the Vaugondy Family before the map plates were passed on to Charles Delamarche. The French and Indian War dramatically transformed political and colonial relationships in the New World. According to the 1763 treaty of Paris, which officially ended the war, France ceded most of its North American Territories to Great Britain.
