Exquisitely colored map of Huntingdonshire. England from Thomas Moule's"The English Counties" published in London c. 1840. These steel plate engravings are variously embellished with English coats of arms, crests, pastoral country scenes and architectural wonders. 1657 Genuine Antique hand colored map Hemispheres Polar Projection. by N. Sanson
Genuine antique map"Les Deux Poles Arcticque Septentrional. Et Antarcticque ou Meridional. by Nicolas Sanson, published in Paris. Map is dated 1657. This double hemisphere map is based on the polar projections to include the northern and southern thirds of the world. Interesting, more for what is not included than what is, it shows the limited extent of knowledge of these extreme latitudes. Extraordinarily enough, the southern projection shows an outline of a land mass"Australe et Incogneue" long before it was discovered, which roughly corresponds to Antarctica as we know it today. In the north, several possible Northwest passages are conjectured, Greenland is depicted attached to the American continent, and a land mass"Terre de Yezo, ou Iesso" takes up the entire area to East Asia. Original outline color distinguishes ... moreboundaries. Left and right margins supported on verso. Light age toning and minor marginal soiling. Overall a very nice example printed on bright paper.
