Genuine Antique map"Marmarica Nuova Tavola" by Ruscelli. Venice, c. 1561. This 450 year old Ptolemaic map of north eastern Africa gives a close-up view of the lower drainage of the Nile, and interesting detail of the coastline on the Mediterranean. Seas are stippled and mountains and lakes are imaginatively illustrated. Ruscelli's maps were some of the first to use the then new copperplate engraving method, rather than historic wood blocks. Ptolemaic maps, representing the early understanding of world geography as mapped by Claudius Ptoloemy in the second century, were the standard for well over 1000 years until exploration expanded understanding in the late 15th century. Good strong impression, margins and center fold as issued. Binding holes present resulting in minor image loss. Faint age toning. Latin text on verso. Extraordinary antique map of 1677 North America based on Guglielmo Sansone's seminal map with revised Italian nomenclature. L' America Settentrionale. by Gio. Giacomo de Rossi. Published in Rome illustrates the imagined new world of early explorers. California is shown as an island. The open ended Great Lakes are imaginatively drawn much further west than they actually lie. The mythical Quivera is shown in modern day Texas. A nonexistant lake feeds the Rio Norte and the Northwest is entirely absent. Indian tribal territories are noted on this hand colored. Copperplate impression embellished with an ornate cartouche. This is an extremely interesting and beautifully executed rendition of the knowledge of North America in 1677. Genuine. Antique map of"North America" entered according to Act of Congress the 13th day of August 1830 by H& F J Huntington of the state of Connecticut. Engraved upon steel by E Huntington. This very interesting hand colored map shows Texas as part of Mexico, Montana as part of Canada, Alaska as part of the Russian possessions and Greenland attached to a larger land mass.
