Nova Totius Terrarum Antique Blaeu Old Color World Map 1630 in Mid-Century Frame
Estate find. This colorful framed map measures approximately 16 1/2" X 12 1/2" inside border measurements) It has slight creases from being folded and a tear in the upper right hand area, hard to see with it being framed. I don't know how old the actual map is but it looks to have been framed in the 1940's to 1950's. From what I have researched, it was originally made in 1630 by William Blaeu. A classic Blaeu world map with the following border figures: A border depicting the seven planets: the Moon. Mercury, Venus, The Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, at the top; the four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water, to the left; the four Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, to the right; and the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Colossus of Rhodes, Pyramids at Giza, Mausoleum of King ... moreMausolus at Halicarnassus(Bodrum) Temple of Diana at Ephesus, Statue of Zeus at Olympia and the Pharo's(lighthouse) at Alexandria, to the lower border. Jansson Denmark Antique Map, kort Danmark excellent condition (Hondius Blaeu)
We are selling an original Johannes Jansson( Jansonius) Denmark Map circa 1670 and printed in Amsterdam- this map is nearly 350 years old and is not a copy. This is a very large decorative antique map with several nice decorative cartouches. Cherubs, Royal Danish coat of arms, stippling of the water shallows and a whole fleet of ships- many of the nice aspects of an antique map. This Kingdom of Denmark map is relatively rare and is entitled Totius IVTIAE Generalis Accurata Delineatio. The overall condition is very good to excellent. There are no worm holes. The center fold is fully intact but does have some slight cracking near the bottom which does not take away from the map appearance, the map impression is strong and the paper is in excellent condition with only slight browning over the ages. This map has been in our family and framed ... morewe believe for at least 100 years(it was hanging in an old family farm house in the 1930s) so we are certain the color is at least old if not original. The coloring is quite muted and nicely done without the modern bright colors. The map is approximately 24 1/4 inches by 19 1/2 inches(62 cm X 50 cm) and the map impression is 22 1/8 inches by 17 1/2(56 cm X 45 cm) The map is framed in a fine cherry one inch frame. Most of these maps have verso printing but the paper on this map is so strong that the verso is not showing through. We would be willing to ship in frame or remove from the frame and ship just the map in the US- buyers choice out of frame is free shipping. For in frame- contact seller for a quote. For overseas shipment, we recommend shipment of just the map shipping pricing listed is for map only.

BLAEU WALES BRECKNOCKSHIRE BRECONSHIRE BRECON original antique map c.1670
A copper-engraved map of the Welsh county of Breconshire by Johannes Blaeu. Published in Amsterdam in c.1660. The map which has later hand colouring is centred on the town of Brecon‘Brecknoke’ and has a decorative title cartouche and scale of miles as well as the British Royal coat of arms and the coronet and feathers of the Prince of Wales. The map measures approximately 500mm x 380mm with generous margins beyond and latin text verso. The condition of the sheet is excellent but buyers should be aware that there is slight toning along the centrefold, occasional light smudging of the colouring in places and there is what appears to be a light ink stain running across the right part of the sheet, presumably due to an error at the time of printing(see photograph) The map remains attractive but is priced accordingly. Offers considered.

Cartographer: The Amsterdam based Blaeu clan represents the single most important family in the history of cartography. The firm was founded in 1596 by Willem Janzoon Blaeu(1571-1638) It was in this initial period. From 1596 to 1672, under the leadership of the Willem Blaeu and with this assistance of his two talented sons Cornelius(1616-1648) ... moreand Johannis(1596-1673) that the firm was most active. Their greatest cartographic achievement was the publication of the magnificent multi-volume Atlas Major. To this day, the Atlas Major represents one of the finest moments in cartography. The vast scope, staggering attention to detail, historical importance, and unparalleled beauty of this great work redefined the field of cartography in ways that have endured well into to the modern era. The cartographic works of the Blaeu firm are the crowning glory of the Dutch Golden Age of Cartography. The firm shut down in 1672 when their offices were destroyed during the Great Amsterdam Fire. The fire also destroyed all of Blaeu's original printing plates and records, an incomparable loss to the history of cartography.
