Mother Bourgeoys Saint Marguerite Relic Second Class Touched to Remains This is a vintage card with a relic of(Mother) St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. This card has a small piece of cloth touched to the remains of St. Marguerite. It measures 1 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches The back has a seal that is from the Congrégation de Notre-Dame De Montreal. The relic is in good. Pre-owned condition but does have some creases. I am selling it as I found it- with a picture of a little girl pinned to it. On the picture is a small fragment of cloth. There is no indication as to who the little girl is or any other information about her. I believe this relic could pre-date St. Marguerite's beatification/cannonization as it states Mother Bourgeoys and not Blessed or Saint. Please see the pictures. Feast Day 16 October Biography Eldest of six children born to Christophe Dufrost de Lajemmerais. Who died in her youth, and Renee de Varennes; niece of Laverendrye, who‘discovered’ the Rocky Mountains. Her father died when Marguerite was seven. Educated for two years by the Ursulines in Quebec, she returned home at age 13 to help her mother raise her younger siblings, and to teach them what she’d learned. Her mother re-married, her step-father an Irish physician who ... morewas considered an outsider by their friends; the family fell out of favour in their own town, and moved to Montreal. There on 12 August 1722 at age 21, Marguerite married François de Youville, and the couple lived with his mother. François proved to be a negligent, adulterous bootlegger. Marguerite was mother of six children, four of whom died in infancy; both surviving sons became priests. Widowed in 1730 at age 28; François left her nothing but debt. Marguerite opened a small store to support herself and her children. And spent much of her profits helping those even poorer than herself. With the help of Father Louis Normant du Faradon and three like-minded women, she founded the Sisters of Charity of the General Hospital of Montreal(Grey Nuns) on 31 December 1737; the congregation received diocesan approval in 1755. She and her sisters took over operation of the failing and decrepit General Hospital in Montreal on 7 October 1747; Marguerite lived in the hospital the rest of her life, served as its director, and through the work of the sisters it became a success and beacon to outcasts. A Certificate of Authenticity, and a silver color theca containing a Second Class relic from the coffin of Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys. Wax seal and threads were not applied, as is frequently the custom for Second Class relics. You are bidding on the theca, the relic is a gift to the highest bidder. Note: Reliquary and theca are relatively small. Reliquary measures 6.75 inches high and about 2.5 inches at widest part; theca is about 3/4 inch in diameter. The governor of Montreal, Canada, was in France looking for teachers for the New World. He invited Marguerite to come to Montreal to teach school and religion classes. She agreed and spent the rest of her life in North America. Marguerite gave away her share of her parents’ inheritance to other members of the family. And in 1653 sailed for Canada. She began construction of a chapel to honor Our Lady of Good Help, and opened her first school in 1658. She returned to France in 1659 to recruit more teachers, and returned with four; in 1670, she went to France again, and brought back six more. These brave women became the first sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame. Marguerite and her sisters helped people in the colony survive when food was scarce. Opened a vocational school, taught young people how to run a home and farm. Marguerite’s congregation grew to 18 sisters, seven of them Canadian. Reliquary Saint Marguerite-Marie Alacoque w/ print, frame & DOCUMENT Seal MCLX
With this auction you will received: 1 relic of St. Marguerite Marie Alacoque in oval filagreed edged frame with part to hang from a chain/ribbon. Measures: approx. 1 1/4 x 1 inch. Looks like 800 stamped onto the silver backing. I have not attempted to open this up. 1 print of the saint. Print is in good condition. Paper it is attached to has tears at bottom(please see photographs) In frame, tears do not show. Fits the 5 x 7 frame which is included. 1 document of this relic from the Vatican and dated MCLX. I've attached many photographs of this so you can see condition and writing as it is signed. There is a tear at the center fold line which can be seen in the pictures. I found the documentation behind the print when I took the frame apart to clean the glass(glass is scratched) This is from a collection of 3. Please email me before the ending day of auction. A little background on Saint Marguerite. Marguerite-Marie Alacoque was born at L'Hautecourt in Burgundy. France. In her youth she was healed from a crippling disorder by a vision of the Blessed Virgin, which prompted her to give her life to God. From 1673 to 1675 she experienced a series of visions of Christ speaking to her and showing her His heart. Before long she entered upon her work. The spreading of public and liturgical devotion to the Sacred Heart. The devotion to. And an official feast of the Sacred Heart was later approved and recommended by the pope.
