Hi. What an incredible reliquary! Containing a 5" section of Saint Julias. Veteran Soldier. Please see below for more information about this miraculous saint! This was part of a French Archbishop's major relic collection. In his hand written inventory. He listed this as a" cathédrale reliquairy de l'évêque. Beziers, St. Jlias, Vet. M. or"Cathedral bishop's alter relic. Beziers Cathedral, Saint Julias, Veteran" also known as" Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse de Béziers" whose bishophricate was terminated in 1800's. That means that while the cathedral remained. It was no longer the seat of a bishop. Many such"demotions" occurred after the revolution, not as a punishment or true demotions, but more as a reorganization under the new order. It is not unusual ... morefor a Cathedral relic to be removed and to change hands during this time. Not all Catherdral relics were truly owned by the Cathedral which housed it, but oftentimes"lent" to the Cathedral by an ecclesiastic or bishop. Who had the rights to remove the relic and/or gift it. This gorgeous reliquary stands almost 16" high. It is made of brass gilded with 24 karat gold. Inside is housed a HUGE relic of saint Julian. Soldier, Martyr. Arm. The relic is sealed with a wax seal on the top, and also on the underside of the reliquary with 4 red silk threads and a perfect wax seal. The entire relic is covered with a bell Shaped crystal cover. The relic is marked, and written S. Julian, Maytyr. The relic itself measures 5" high. The entire reliquary weighs 6.3 pounds. It has a"roof" and cross which is removable to access the relic, although the relic is completely sealed 2 times. You can touch the actual relic, but not remove it. This is the most prized relic ever. From the estate of a French Archbishop. Here we have a very very large piece of the TRUE CROSS, 2" long. This relic is housed in a hand blown glass vessel. I have seen these types of reliquaries before. Convents and monasteries who fashioned reliquaries would store prized relics, not in folded paper as more than a few ebay sellers always list.mysteriously always with the same handwriting and seal, contact me if you have any questions about whether a certain relic is authentic or a possible forgery. These hand blown glass reliquaries were usually STACKED ON THEIR SIDES, with the paper or velum sealing the opening exposed and written of for identification, exactly as this one is. The measurements are as follows: height 4 3/4" high. 2 1/2 wide. The relic of the true cross measures about 2" long and 3/8" wide at least. The wood of the true cross is a deep dark, dark deep brown color. It is wrapped in pure white cool. With a piece of velum wrapped around it reading LIGNO CRUCIS DN for Wood of the Cross of our Lord. It is hard to describe actually looking at the wood of the Cross in person.as for me, I feel an incredible reverence when looking at this relic. A sense of peace and awe. Antique silver reliquary theca containing a relic of"S. Mauri Abate" it has the ecclesiastical seal in good condition inside of the case. On the obverse of the theca is a relief of The Holy Mother with The Ave Maria in Latin. I do not know the provenance of this piece or this Saint and could only find a San Mauro di Abate in Italian with no information in English. I would love to know what diocese the seal emanates from. In any case this is a lovely and beautiful piece in absolutely excellent condition it is suspended on a Sterling Silver snake chain hallmarked Italy etc. With a swivel eye hook. Good luck. Eymard Relic Theca ossibus Pendant Certificate 1925 Vintage Reliquary Antique
Truly beautiful item. Please look carefully at the pictures for the detail to the piece. I tried to translate the certificate online. But please forgive any errors as it may not be exact. I did take a picture of the online translation and included it. An amazing, important piece, and I'll let all of the pictures speak for themselves. Certificate is the original and not a copy, the imprint of the border is raised on the back side of the paper. Some pictures were with flash, others were not, so note the following. Theca is silver in color, I left the original patina and did not polish it, with gold colored interior accents on/in the case and gold paper accents behind and rimming the white paper inside. Certificate paper is slightly yellowed as seen in some pictures and not a white color that may show in other pictures with a flash where ... morethe color is washed out. The stamp in the lower left corner is light but visible. I will gladly send more pictures upon request. Check it out.Here's a Unique Original& most likely One-of-a-kind 3" wide by 4" long by 3/4" thick very ornately made& EARLY(Original owner dated it to the Civil War Era and it certainly looks like it could be that old) theca reliquary from the Catholic Saint Camillus de Lellis-The relic is contained in the original finely made case that contains a color image(hand painted? Don't know) of the Saint at top and has 9(NINE! different individually hand sewn relices. All with small slips of paper identifying each inset on the ornate red cloth swatch under the glass on front-The reliquary has two identification papers inside- One is handwritten in Italian and described the relics and the other is a typewritten translation(obviously done much later) titled: Translation of Manuscript relating to Reliquary of the Saint ... morePatriarch Cammillus de Lellis" that reads: I the undersigned bear witness and affirm the truth of the following. That the particles collected by me in this reliquary, ornamented with a metal consisting of copper and zinc, in the form of a double oval, in the one which is superposed appears the portrait of the Saint Patriarch Cammillus de Lellis, each of which ovals is provided with a glass cover well closed and bound together with a silk thread of a red color and sealed with my small seal impressed on Red Spanish wax. These particles are extracted from the authentic bones, Praecordia, Velum(tinged with blood) The Albe, The Stole,Planita, and the Subuculum and also the Belt of Saint Camimillus de Lellis of the order of our regular clerics. In testimony whereof, dated at Lisbon 22d Oct. 1782(Seal) Joans Bapt. Marchetti" on the other piece and the thread and red wax seal are contained(although loosely) inside the original handwritten document with an official seal inset inside!
