Hi. This is a relic/reliquary containing an Agnus Dei. And it has also been touched to the True Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It measures 1" X 3/4" One side has the words AGNUS DEI, and the other, in French, TOUCHE A LA VRAI CROIX, or Touched to the True Cross. After Vatican 2, NO NEW AGNUS DEIS HAVE BEEN CONCECRATED. This is a shame, as the Agnus Dei is a powerful SACRAMENTAL, in the same category as holy water and blessed palms. The history of the Agnus Dei: Agnus Dei means Lamb of God. And is the name given to certain wax discs upon which are impressed the figure of a lamb, and the blessing of which, actually a consecration, is reserved to the reigning Supreme Pontiff. All this is fitted masterly inside a silvered 2.5 inch pectoral opening crucifix. The cross is an ebony inlaid one. The corpus rests on the inlay and it opens by a hinge mechanism that clicks into place and then screwed tight with the fastening nut. Very solidly too. This is from around 1880-1900 and was probably acquired by an Austrian Pilgrim in Rome. On 6 December 1273 he experienced a divine revelation which so enraptured him that he abandoned the Summa. Saying that it and his other writing were so much straw in the wind compared to the reality of the divine glory. This one is certainly from the early 1900. It's a great travel shrine. In the center is a tiny miniature statue with The Holy Family. It is made in chalkware and painted with gold metalic paint. Around the statue is a great scrolled art work of old paper. Beneath the statue is situated the Agnus Dei relic. And at the sides are the relics of saint Agatha and saint Victoria. This antique rosary is made up of"spina cristi" the seeds from a thorny plant said to be what Christ's crown of thorns was made of. Comes from the Zizyphus Spina-Christi plant. Native to the Middle East. The reliquary crucifix opens with a screw which is in working order. Inside are 3 relics: St Dominic, Lamb of God(Agnus Dei) and the Earth from the Catacombs. The main strip reads"Lignum arboris S. P. Dominici" which translates from Latin to"The wood from the tree of Holy Father Dominic" Portions of the word Agnus can be seen and I believe would probably read"Agnus Dei" and refer to piece of wax in the center, which is the Lamb of God. Also there is a small bit of dirt on the right side which is dirt from the Roman catacombs. Relic in mint condition from my uncles collection(he passed away) and was very devoted to passionist saints. he had a lot of these relics with documents and all bare seals of wax at the back. no damages or humidity effected these relics. This is the blessed domenico of our lady a true humble and holy man who prayed and prayed for salvation of souls. He was attacked by demons while he used to do penance.
