Relic Reliquary STAFF SAINT JOSEPH Sp. Virgin Mary ~ Foster Father Jesus Christ
This is another relic from the estate of a French Archbishop's extensive relic collection. This is a relic of Saint Joseph's staff or walking stick. The relic is labeled: S. Joseph Sp BM. Saint Joseph, spouse of the Virgin Mary There are no first class relics of Saint Joseph. Ancient church tradition says he was assumed into heaven. Like the Blessed Mother, but this is not church dogma. There are 3 different relics associated with and venerated for Saint Joseph; his cloak. His staff and his belt. This relic is from his staff. The main relic of his staff is encased in silver and kept in the Hermitage of Camaldoli in Central Italy. The staff St. Joseph holds comes from an apocryphal tale. According to The Golden Legend. Several men besides Joseph wanted Mary's hand in marriage. Each suitor, the story goes, was instructed by the ... morehigh priest to place a staff on an altar. The staff that Joseph brought miraculously burst into leaf, a sign that he was God's choice to be Mary's husband{compare this story with the account of Aaron's rod blossoming in Numbers 17:16-23} In artistic representations of the scene, the unsuccessful suitors are usually portrayed breaking their staffs across their knees, while Joseph holds his leafy staff. These other suitors from the legend are not seen in this window(again, probably due to size constraints) but the foster-father of our Lord is shown holding his staff, the leaves and flowers of which can be clearly seen. This is why Saint Joseph is usually represented holding a staff with lilies blooming from the tip. This relic measures 1 1/2" x 1" Threads and seal are perfect. Ensuring the integrity of the relic. This dates from circa 1800. The name of the Archbishop will be given to the relic's new custodian. As per the request of the family. Please see my other auctions. I am listing many French and Italian antiques and relics, most of them very rare, including instruments of Christ's Passion, The True Cross and the Stone of Anointing. THE STAFF OF S

Felice Desa was a poor carpenter who died before the boy was born. Creditors drove his mother. Francesca Panara, from her home, and Joseph was born in a stable. Starting at age eight, he received ecstatic visions that left him gaping and staring into space. He had a hot temper, which his strict mother worked to overcome. Apprenticed to a shoemaker. At age 17 Joseph applied for admittance to the Friars Minor Conventuals. But was refused due to his lack of education. He applied to the Capuchins. Was accepted as a lay-brother in 1620.
