17th. Century Reliquary-28 Relics from Saints
In an ornate carved horn frame. Covered by small hand blown glass crystals, this reliquary once held what appear to be First Class Relics from thirty Saints. Sadly, two have been lost to time. The piece is double sided, with twelve repositories arranged around a large central gallery, decorated with strands of cut and coiled paper and foil, this in turn is covered by a crudely beveled pane of glass. I have not been able to decipher all the saint's names, these are written on small labels with in the repositories themselves, however the following is what I have come up with-to the best of my knowledge and ability: On the Obverse: 1. Marian? 2. Visolan, 3. Cipriani, 4. Maurine 5. 6. Nemerin, 7. Carone 8. 9. 10. Cristine, 11. 12. A? Verso: 1. 2. Justine, 3. Daniel, 4. Silvian, 5. 6. 7. Maurine, 8. 9. 10. Corne, 11. Benadict, 12. Felcin. ... moreThe center gallery holds several relics that the labels of which I have not been able to figure out, however St. Simon appears on the center of the verso gallery and St. Lucian appears to be in the left part of the obverse gallery. The horn frame has minor losses due to brakeage and insect damage commiserate with it's age. It has been suggested by a local curator that this reliquary may have originated in Germany or the Low Countries in the early 17th. Century
