Larger knob Made by Russell and Erwin MFG Co We are pleased to offer this Lot of 5 Antique 19th Century Bronze Doorknobs. All are ornate c. 1870. Two Lion Head and one ornate Bronze are from Russell& Erwin and the other two lion heads unmarked, made by another quality hardware firm of the day. These knobs are from the golden age of hardware, when quality hardware was manufactured to last and has. This lot is perfect for the collector or restorer and we are now seeing where furniture remakers and talented artists are making coat and clothing racks using these beautiful knobs. After the Civil War, door hardware changed radically. Some early design patents for decorated hardware were for coffin handles, but it didn't take long for decoration to spread to ... moredoor hardware. By 1869, design patents for hinges, escutcheons, and an outside door latch were granted. The fervor for decorative door hardware was soon heightened by a new casting technique that introduced molten bronze into a mold under pressure, producing castings of exceptional detail. This process was spearheaded by Russell& Erwin Manufacturing Company of New Britain, Connecticut(R&E) which turned out a host of popular designs, the most famous being the"doggie" knob. Other whimsical R&E creations included an escutcheon depicting a flamingo drinking champagne and a large lion's-head knob like ours. Once the R&E designs debuted, a flood of imitations followed. Pair of white porcelain knobs from the late 19 th century and salvaged from a Victorian home in the Chicago area. One of the knobs has a very fine hairline crack in the glaze. But is not broken and doen’t affect the integrity of the piece. These will be great cleaned up and that task is being left up to the new owner. Here’s the scoop: Knobs: 2 ¼” dia. Rosettes: 2 ¼” and 1 ½” diameter; Mortise: 3 5/8”h x 3”d x 1/2” thick– Plate is 1 3/8”w x 5”h(stamped“July 15, 1882” There is also a stamp on the mortise case that I have included a picture of which is the Russell& Erwin mark. I'm not sure what the age is on these. They measure approximately 2 ¼” in diameter. All the knobs are tight and secure to the bases. The lockset set turns with the knobs but the key does not open the deadbolt when turning. One of the single knob bases and the lockset plate appears to brass(They’re non magnetic)There appear to be no cracks on the knobs but there are some small scratches, some scuffs, some flea bites and some paint. Really nice hard to find Russell Erwin lockset for your consideration. US and Canada Patents March and May 1900. Unusual hard to find set which includes two nicely patterned ornate backplates. Two doorknobs with patterning, mortise lock with matching faceplate as the included latch and deadbolt slide catch marked 1900 and a drive rod with a few set screws. Mortise lock latch springs feel good although should have a good cleaning and lube for optimal operation. Mortise box looks pressed and peened. not cast iron. Marked Russell Erwin mfg co. and some other stuff that is hard to read. Original finish on all the pieces is worn although it looks like a craftsman period style black with copper Jappanned appearance. Collars on backplates are good and the set screw opening are good on the knob necks for reuse. Questions encouraged and welcome otherwise ... morewhat you se is what you get. Item description Antique Russell& Erwin Classic design pocket door lock set c.1880. This great cast bronze set in a highly desirable pattern. The set is in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition. The lock face plates and door pulls are beautifully finished in corresponding patterns typical of R&E at the time. This is a complete set and is designed for a double pocket door with flat stiles. The keyed lock works smoothly. The finger pulls extend properly and the locking bolt is in excellent working order. The key is adjustable to the doors thickness and works as it should. The receiver lock is one of the better designs with a spring loaded cover for the latch bolt opening. The receiver lock's face plate has some tool marks from an improper attempt to loosen the pull, but the unit has been restored to complete and proper function. ... moreThe primary lock's backset to the keyhole center is 2" and both face plates are 7 7/16" tall x 1 1/4" wide. The lock boxes are 5 1/2" tall x 11/16" thick x 3 1/2" deep. The door pulls are 5 1/4" x 2 3/4" at the widest point. The recessed part of the pull is 2 1/8" in diameter x 1/2" deep. The set includes one cast bronze faced pocket door lock with a working key. One matching receiver lock and four matching door pulls. This is a very nice functioning lock set ready to be installed with no broken or internal parts missing parts. If your going to spend real money on a vintage lock set you should expect no broken or missing parts. Pieces that have not been abraded and diminished by sand blasting, wire brushing or excessive polishing and at a minimum the ability to make a return. Excellent condition. Super ornate heavy cast brass or bronze doorknob set. It was made by The Russell and Erwin Mfg. Co in New Britain Conn- this is stamped on the inside of the doorknobs. The larger knob is nearly 2 1/2 inches in diameter, the smaller knob nearly 2 1/4 inches in diameter. THe door plate has the swing piece for the keylock and is MINT. The door plate has the escutcheon for the large knob built into it, the smaller knob would mount on the doo backside and has a ferrel plate with it. Lot of 5 Bronze & Brass Yale & Town/Russell & Erwin Door Hardware
The plate appears to be bronze. Has been previously polished and is made by Yale& Towne. It measures approx. 8" long by 2.25" at the widest point. The rose also appears to be bronze and has some paint splotches and green oxidation. There are 2 oval knobs. One has a spindle attached and is approx. 2 5/8" long. It dates from 1910. Is made by Y& T and is the Largo pattern. This appears to be bronze and was previously polished. The other knob is from Y& T and also from 1910 in the Navarro pattern. It is 2 5/8" long and seems to be polished bronze. Note: The set screw is frozen tight and may need a good dose of WD 40. The round knob looks like red brass but may be bronze as it seems to be heavier than a brass knob. It is c. 1888 from Russell& Erwin and measures about 2 1/8" in diameter. Congratulations you are bidding on a a set of four matching Russell& Erwin mortise lock sets. Pat.Jan.28, 1889. These are steel with copper and smoke finish on the back plates, strike plates and lock faces. Some of the black porcelain handles still have a hint of copper tone on the metal. The mortise lock boxes are marked Russell& Erwin MFG. New Britain Conn.USA Pat Jan 28, 89 June 11, 89. Included is a bag of screws and some washers for the handles. The handle catches can be reversed, for use on right or left hand opening doors. These have a decent return spring on the handle, working skeleton key deadbolt With Key MEASUREMENTS: The back plates are 5 1/2" x 1 1/2" The locks face plates are 5 1/4" long x 7/8" wide. The lock is 3 1/8" deep from face. 3 1/2" tall, 1/2" thick. The handle center sets ... moreback 2 1/4" from face plate. The top of key hole is 2" below the center of the handle opening. Cast bronze door knobs in the finely cast"damascene" pattern by Russell and Erwin. This sophisticated pattern consists of swirls and flower motifs and to this day remains a classic style. The bronze ornate rosettes are not of the same pattern as the knobs but they are Russell and Erwin rosettes from the same period and they look beautiful with these knobs. Russell & Erwin Doorknob Set & Plates
Knobs are in good condition they are not dented or damaged. But the knobs has a coat of paint thats peeling, they will need to be refinished, The door plates that go right behind the knobs are in good condition also. One I believe is copper and the thicker one is a type of alloy.They would also need to be refinished too The strike plate is bent some and will need straightening. The lock body turns the latch bolt smoothly and it retracts nicely as it has a good spring, The major problem is the face plate is only partially connected to the square lock body(see picture of where the pen is pointed) its connected at the top but not at the bottom. That would Need to be repaired, I do not have a skeleton key so I cannot assess the lock bolt mechanism

Complete 1869 Antique Brass Bronze Door Hardware. Russell& Erwin Polished This auction is for a complete set of door hardware. It is a high quality set. From the golden age of hardware. The back of the striker plate says; patent Dec. 29 1869. Made by Russell and Erwin; it is signed on the dead bolt end. as seen in photo) The brass or bronze hardware has been polished, to restore its' orignal granduer. The set includes a set of door knobs, back plates, mortice lock, and matching striker plate. The key, and any screws etc. you may need are not included. The lock works, we tested it with our own key. It should not be difficult to find a skeleton key that will work. It is in good vintage condition, no breaks or cracks. The back of one knob, is starting to tarnish. It looks like rust in the photo, but is actually verdigris. Upon closer ... moreinspection; I noticed the two knobs, are not an exact match. They are both equally beautiful. Because they are polished, it is difficult to notice. I tested everything with a magnet; the only thing it adhered to was the actual lock its' self. This is as it should be. Approx. measurements are as follows: striker plate-5&5/8" high x 1" wide, the lock front measures the same, the actual lock extends into door 3&1/2" back plates- 2" round, and the knobs- 2&1/4" across. Please view all photos, as they are part of my description. The items I list are primarily vintage. And may have some minor flaws. I try to mention damage or wear; but I don't hold these pieces to the same standard as I would if they were new. Good vintage condition means the piece is in the condition consistent with it's age. This set is complete. Iron and pressed steel. Unusual lockset- Has a large screw on the lock plate which locks the knob mechanism- When the knob mechanism is locked the latch may be operated by the upper key from the the outside and with the small twist knob from inside. A second. Different, key is used to operate the bar lock. This key is required to operate the bar from outside or in. I have neither key. On the inside the number 124 appears.

Antique Russell & Erwin Door Knob Set Plate Latch Assembly Sets 1889
This is for a lot of 2 complete sets and parts. They are stamped Russell& Erwin with the date June 11. 89 Knobs are in great condition. Please note these were painted over. The knobs worked fine. We just replaced the old doors in the house with new ones. No keys included. These were on doors we had stored away so the insides of the cases may not be completely clean.

The design on the solid brass door knobs almost looks like a Tudor rose encircled with laurels. The back plates measures 6-1/2" x 2" and appear to be brass as well. Although I am not an expert. The lock part is marked Russell& Erwin Mfg. Co. and the latest patent date is 1898. The inner box measures 3-1/2" high x 3" deep x 1/2" thick. The latch turns easily. Connecticut, c. 1875. It is copper clad over lead and has a fourfold-symmetrical design to it. Diameter measures 2-1/2" and it weighs 9.35 ounces. Still retains over 95% of its original copper clad. The one knob has most of the copper worn off reveling the brass. The back plates and other knob have virtually all of the copper plating in tact. see photos. It consists of a handle, back plate, and 2 installation bolts. Both handle and plate are made of solid, heavy, thick, cast iron, not flimsy wrought iron. This pull was removed from a big. Beautiful pair of doors(see last photo) that we salvaged from Northeastern Ohio. At the point of salvage, the pull was found dirty and rusty(see 2nd to last photo) Since then, we've cleaned it to the best of our ability. There are still a few spots of rust here and there, but that only enhances its distressed look. Considering that the pull was probably touched hundreds or even thousands of times. These look to be largely bronze or possible red brass with some iron parts. They are heavy duty. I will describe the dimensions as best as I can. The main box ... moreof the lock is about 6-3/8"tall. 3-1/2" deep from the plate and 3/4" thick. The plate of the lock is stepped. The main dimension is about 9-3/8" by 1-1/2" with each step about 3/4" wide and the inset one about 7/16" back from the top one. The depth of the lock box was measured from the inset step. The striker plate is 8-1/8" long and the width and step dimensions are similar. Overall striker plate depth is about 1-1/8" One plate is about 8-1/4" long with holes at 6-1/8" center and 3-7/8" center. The other side is in two separate pieces, it looks to be made that way. The knobs are slightly different sizes, one has a good scuff on one side. Does come with a key to work the main bolt. Great antique solid brass door set no key. Made in New Britain. Conn by Russell& Erwin Mfg. Co. Last patent date on the lock set is Oct. 18 1898, 116 years ago. Knobs have decorative Grecian egg and dart pattern with Eleusis name a Greek town. Set consists of 2 matching knobs, 1 mortise lock, 2 identical cast brass back plates. Only the face of the mortise is brass. Mortise and lock have a good working springs. No set screws on the door knobs they are available. Door Knobs have a 2 1/2 diameter, Both back plates are 7" tall X 2 1/2"wide, Mortise face plate is 6 1/4 X 1 wide, Mortise body 3 1/2" tall X 3 1/4" deep X 1/2"thick. Antique 1870 Patent Russell & Erwin VICTORIAN DOOR KNOB ~ Vintage
A fancy Victorian door knob marked on the underside"MADE BY RUSSELL& ERWIN MFG. CO. It's also faintly marked on the base"PAT. JUNE 7. 1870" It looks to me like the center design on the face is a different kind of metal than the balance of the knob. The knob measures approximately 2 1/4" in diameter across the face and approximately 2" in length from front to back. It's attached by a fixed rivet to a square shaft which extends approximately 4 3/8" from the base of the knob. It's in very good condition showing moderate wear. It does have paint splatter on the reverse and has grimy residue on some of the details. It might look better if cleaned and polished but I'll leave all improvements to the buyer.
