Antique Mallory Wheeler "Arabic" Pattern Passage Lock Set, Cast Bronze c.1890
Item description Antique Mallory Wheeler"Arabic" pattern passage door lock set in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition. This is an original matched set of a very popular Mallory Wheeler pattern with the less common drum type knobs. As with most Mallory Wheeler lock sets the casting and construction quality is very good. The pieces are cast bronze with a background pattern that mimics water washed sand. The set originally had a complete copper tinted finish. Some of which remains intact. The mortise lock and strike plate are reversible. Included with the set is a difficult to find reversible pattern matched strike plate. The lock has good springs and is in excellent working order. As pictured, the lock is setup for a right hand swing door. Let me know if you need this changed and I'll reverse it for you. The bronze pieces ... moreshow some light pitting and the lock box cover has a repaired crack. The crack doesn't affect the locks function. The lock's back set to the keyhole is is 2 3/8" The lock face is 5 9/16" by 7/8" The lock box is 3 3/4" tall x 9/16" thick x 3 1/4" deep. The door plates are 5 1/4" tall by 1 5/8" wide. The knobs are 2 1/8" in diameter. The strike plate is 3 5/8" tall x 7/8" wide. The set includes one cast bronze faced mortise lock. Two cast bronze knobs, two cast bronze door plates and a matching strike plate. Also included is a working vintage deadbolt key and reconditioned knob spindle with two new set screws. The set screw holes have been deburred so the screws turn in easily. This is a very nice functioning lock set ready to be installed. Condition All of my pieces have been carefully cleaned with attention given to preserving original finishes where they remain intact. Many pieces fall victim to wire brushing and high speed polishing which only results in a rough pitted surface and erosion of the sharpness and detail of the pattern. Enough to fit four doors, these four sets are by Mallory Wheeler and were made around 1885. The eight handsome doorknobs and eight doorplates have a vernacular Victorian geometric design. The knobs are cast brass and the plates cast iron with brass collars- we like the contrasting hues very much. The mortises locks are a match; two are brass with slight bends and two are cast iron. These locks(which can be easily reversed for either hand door) are in fine working order with newer keys. All of these pieces are in very good to excellent condition with light wear(note one scrape on a doorknob- see pic) We include the rods and rod screws. Such elegant sets.
