The handle is 5" high, 1" diameter at the widest part. The thumb is 1 1/4" wide, 1 1/8" deep, and the thumb lever projects 3 1/4" from the back plate. It will accommodate up to a 2 1/2" door. This early latch is hand forged and is quite pitted but solid. It appears to have a coat of oil on it to help preserve it. There are no visible cracks, breaks or repairs, but the handle appears to be bent slightly to the right of center. There are no interior door parts included. This is a Large Heavy Antique Solid Bronze Door Handle/ Pull with Thumb Latch. There is no maker's mark nor any other marks. The overall length of this large handle including the upper and lower back plates is about 10 5/8" It weighs jsut under two pounds(1 pound. 14.2 ounces) and it has a nice heavy feel. The four mounting holes in the top plate are on 1 3/4" centers horizontally and 2 3/8" centers vertically. The two mounting holes in the bottom plate are on 1 3/8" centers horizontally. The vertical center to center measurement from the bottom holes in the top plate to the holes in the bottom plate is 5 7/8" The holes in the bottom plate are also slightly inset horizontally with respect to the corresponding holes in the top plate. Antique Hand Forged Iron Gate Latch - Thumb Latch Lever for Primitive Gate, Door
Offered for Auction: Old 19th or very Early 20th Century Primitive Gate or Door Latch Lever with Mounted Housing. The latch was crudely hand crafted probably by a farmer to suit a purpose rather than an aesthetic need. The lever has an elongated thumb pad and longer shaft with 90 degree angled lifting end. I do not know exactly how the lever was mounted. It is balanced when it is in a vertical rather than horizontal position so it might have hung on the side of a post instead of its top. The pivot is a bolt with a hammered end and the shaft is a bit longer than the lever's width so there is a little play from side to side. Condition: Fair given its age and use. The latch pivots freely. There is surface rust and discoloration. Scratches, dings and nicks and the way it was forged is very irregular. The edges of the mounting bracket are ... morerough and they are different lengths. Antique wrought iron suffolk Lima Bean Thumb Latch door hardware 8 1/2"
Antique wrought iron Suffolk thumb latch with parts The latch is 18th/early 19th century. it is 8 1/2" long. The lima bean cusps are 2 1/2" wide-very nice. This latch could be used as an interior or exterior latch_ The thumb piece is 2 1/8" long. The latch bar is period and is 7 1/2" long and has a nice lift knob The keeper and staple are wrought reproductions. Antique thumb latch door handles wrought iron large lot hand made
Up for bids is a great lot of old thumb latch type door handles from an old estate. The smaller ones measure about 6 1/2" long. Hammer marks are visible on the back sides of the mounting plates. The larger one measures about 9" long. All in good vintage condition with some wear and stray paint from use. Thanks for looking.
