click images for enlargement(further images below) We offer this superb medieval signet ring. Dating to the 14th century AD. The device is deeply cut ... moreinto the round bezel, in the form of a Lombardic letter"R" or"I.R" Around the letters are sprigs of holly or thistle leaves. This ring would date to the late 14th century- early 15th century when this type of lettering was fashionable, latter signets are engraved with black-letter script during the 15th- 16th century. The round border is decorated in a similar fashion to signet rings of the same period- notably bearing devices such as the crowned stag of King Richard II and the falcon in fetterlock. This ring would have been fully mercurial gold gilded. Though as it was worn for a long time(and buried for six hundred years) it was mostly worn off. What is nice is the gold gilding remains within the seal, giving a wonderful contrast to the design. Signet rings were rarely decorated. Being a utilitarian piece of jewellery that was used almost everyday, for sealing business transactions. Such a ring may have once been owned by a royal servant or alderman, though more likely by a merchant. This is a large finger ring, almost certainly worn over a glove. The gold gilding would have made this ring appear to be of solid gold, so an impressive status symbol to be seen wearing! Today this ring can still be worn and used. Especially if your initials are I.R. OBJECT: Signet Ring CULTURE: Medieval DATE: c. 14th- 15th Century AD MATERIAL: Gold-gilded Bronze RING SIZE: 12 1/2(US) Z(UK) SIZE: 27mm x 26.6mm x 14mm(bezel 14mm dia) WEIGHT: 12.3g This item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described. Beautiful ... moreAncient Chinese Buddhist Shrine Decorative Clay Tile Depicting Eight Hindu-Style Bodhisattvas. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Chinese Buddhist Clay Shrine Tile. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Liao Dynasty(907-1125 A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 243 millimeters(9 3/4 inches) Width: 188 millimeters(7 1/2 inches) Thickness: 25 millimeters(1 inch) Weight: 3 pounds. 6 ounces(about 1½ kilograms) CONDITION: Exceptional. Integrity entirely intact. No significant chips or cracks. Minor surface crazing. Professionally conserved. Can be sealed upon request. DETAIL: This is a very beautiful. Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Europe was an industry for the seafaring mariners of the 16th. 17th, and 18th centuries. Entire fleets of sailing ships plied the trade, especially the Dutch and English. However in addition to porcelain, ancient Chinese ceramics were also extremely popular in Vi
