GJPaw Auctions is very pleased to offer a Rare Koma Burial Figure. The figure is an excavated burial piece from a 15th to 17th century tomb in the Komaland area of northern Ghana. These figures were first discovered by locals of Yikpabongo village in the 1960s during the process of excavating mud for building village houses. Soon after their discovery. Archaeologists started professional digs in Yikpabongo and examples of these terracottas started appearing in museums and for sale in European galleries. Interest in these terracottas grew and in 2000 they officially appeared on the ICOM Red List. Many of the terracottas found are broken fragments and only heads, but this piece is a full figure and a figure that appears in"janus form" with two faces. The figure measures a large 7.6 inches tall by 8 inches long by 4 inches wide(19.3 ... morecm by 20.3 cm by 10.1 cm) It is in good excavated condition with the legs being reattached and missing, a feature which is likely original to when the piece was first found. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height(including detachable head) 299 millimeters(12 inches) Breadth: 97 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) Thickness: 63 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) Base: 99 x 68 millimeters(4 x 2 3/4 inches) CONDITION: Very good though partly restored. Hind leg of baby horse was broken off and not recovered. Was restored by conservator. Chip to one corner of top side of pedestal. A little wear consistent with any funerary item which is over five(perhaps ... moreclose to six) centuries in age including the customary little blemishes expected with hand-produced ancient porcelain. Not absolutely flawless, but certainly in a very good state of preservation. DETAIL: Here's a nicely conserved. Relatively well-preserved, and considerably larger than customary sancai glazed statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Ming Dynasty artwork. Sancai, or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. The production of such exquisite porcelain items required multiple firings of fine white clay at temperatures near 1000c(1800f) degrees. A wide variety of statuettes were commonly produced such as musicians, chamberlains(butlers) maids, cooks, even animals; all designed to serve their deceased master.
