CONDITION: Exceptionally good! Extraordinary! Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial since ancient times. All quite normal for a 2.000 year old vase. DETAIL: A splendid. Exceptionally well preserved large sized earthenware jar from the Han Dynasty of Ancient China. The jar is the size of a very large melon– almost the size of a soccer ball. What’s really remarkable is that it is seemingly about 2,000 years old and is entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little dings and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then spent twenty centuries buried. There are simply the normal blemishes(bumps and dips) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware jar such as this) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! There are some light soil accretions which could be brushed or washed off if one were gentle and careful. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Eur

The production of such exquisite porcelain items required multiple firings of fine white clay at temperatures near 1000c(1800f) degrees. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia. First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some

CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Impressed Design Pot. ATTRIBUTION: Ancient China. Warring States Period(475-221 B.C. in the Style of Chou. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 191millimeters(7 2/3 inches) at bowl; 108 millimeters(4 1/3 inches) at top lip. 130 millimeters(4 1/4 inches) at base. Height: 112 millimeters(5 1/2 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times including a few of the customary(almost obligatory) tiny rim chips. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware pot/jar in the style of the third or fourth century B.C. Warring States Period. The style of pot, the intricate impressing, and the grey clay color suggest it might be of Chou origin. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. In more ancient times, more often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. Later more sophisticated techniques such as this vessel saw wood blocks used to impress the design into the vessel. If you look closely at this vessel, you can see that indeed a wood block was used to impress the same design over and over again into the wet clay. You can see in many instance where the alignment of one block was not quite square with the next, some overlapping, others with a clear boundary between the impression blocks. It is a fairly large-sized piece. The size of a very large honeydew melon. You can also see that two(non-functional) handles” were added to the vessel, likewise made from grey clay, and attached to the bowl while both were still wet. What

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Secret of the Hittites: The ... moreDiscovery of an Ancient Empire by C. W. Ceram. Translated from the German by Richard and Clara Winston. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 279 pages. Publisher: Knopf; 1956) ISBN: 0880295937. The Secret of the Hittites" returns to the startling panorama of the author's first book. Gods, Graves, and Scholars" in the continued examination of the most ancient world known to man. Since the publication of C. W. Ceram's famous first work, a new discovery of enormous significance transformed the perception of ancient history. The darkest archaeological riddle of the Orient is on the verge of an ultimate and improbable resolution. And this with dramatic suddenness in the space of a few momentous years. The mysterious ruins discovered in central Turkey in 1834 were perplexing. Yet no one was willing to ascribe them to the Hittites, a people given scant acknowledgement in the Bible and dismissed as a minor Syrian tribe. It was not until 1880 that a hero of archaeology advanced the dynamic theory that there had once been a mighty Hittite Empire stretching from the Black Sea to Damascus. By 1910, only archaeologists and historians had begun to gain a faint and fragile knowledge of its lost history. Furthermore. Only in the years since 1946 has there been any hope of reading the fantastic Hittite hieroglyphic inscriptions, and only recently has anyone actually done so. Finally, almost twenty centuries after Christ, we know that twenty centuries before Christ the Indo-European Hittites descended into Asia Minor. We may now establish a third great empire beside the Babylon of Hammurabi and the Egypt of Ramses II read the first fragments of a profound unknown literature, of which Mr. Ceram provides stirring excerpts. The truth about Kadesh as one of the few battles that truly shaped world history is now known to us. The first great political treaty. Betwee

CLASSIFICATION: Roman/Moesian Terra Cotta Oil Lamp of Very Basic and Simple Style. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia(Present-Day Bulgaria) First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 78 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 66 millimeters(2 2/3 inches) Height: 24 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Excellent. Typical soot stains around wick hole indicative of ancient use. Some alkaline deposits. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved red-colored terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

NOTE: Resizing is available(may incur nominal extra cost depending on size required) DESCRIPTION: The oldest silver artifacts found by archaeologists date from ancient Sumeria about 4.000 B.C. At many points in the ancient world, silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians believed that the skin of their gods was composed of gold, and their bones were thought to be of silver. The first large-scale silver mines were in Anatolia(ancient Turkey) and Armenia, where as early as 4,000 B.C. silver was extracted from lead ores. From Turkey and Armenia silver refining technology spread to the rest of Asia Minor and Europe. By about 2,500 B.C. the Babylonians were one of the major refiners of silver. The high value ancient cultures place on silver is demonstrated by the fact that some of the richest burials in history uncovered by archaeologists have been from this time frame; that of Queen Puabi of Ur, Sumeria(26th century B.C.
