With 64 Illustrations. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 396 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications; 1992) ISBN: 0486273482. From his exalted throne. A mighty watchtower, Odin surveys the world; a world of gods, giants, elves, dwarves, and men. Below, the Valkyrs ride forth, their golden hair streaming through the clouds, the pale northern sun glinting on shields and spears. Through the battlefields they swoop, bringing the kiss of death to the warriors bound for Valhalla, hall of the chosen slain. The myths of the Norsemen are darkly romantic. Heroic and tragic. For sheer adventure and high drama, they are without equal. Their sagas are stirring tales that are as powerful now as they were a thousand years ago. But less well known are the stories themselves, stories with all the classic qualities of a long-lost age. Valor, nobility, and a triumphant greatness of spirit. These were the human attributes the medieval Norsemen admired most. What dazzling inspiration for young Viking warriors these tales must have been, vividly told beside blazing fires on dark and frozen nights. Their preservation. From the oral tradition to the prose sagas that have come down to us, owes much to the Norse colonization of Iceland. Here the art of storytelling lived on, vivid, dramatic, and realistic. The stories feature well-defined characters, colorfully portrayed. For deeply imbued with the values of the Norsemen though they were, the intention was entertainment, the emphasis on action and pace. And on these northerly shores, the sweep of Christianity across Europe was delayed long enough to allow learned men, proud of their pagan past, to adapt the art of storytelling to the written word. The laity continued the practices of pilgrimages, veneration of relics, and belief in the power of the Devil.

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Medieval Goldsmith’s Work. 71 ... morePlates in Full Color by Isa Belli Barsali. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 167 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Paul Hamlyn; 1966) When we see the range of marvelous objects produced by medieval goldsmiths. From brooches and belt clasps to crowns, chalices, reliquaries, and even altar frontals, we appreciate the multitude of skills they had at their fingertips. And when the author traces the various influences that contributed to medieval Europe through the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic periods, we begin to understand why the production of medieval goldsmiths was so prolific. The ingenuity of the craftsmen was limitless, and they did not hesitate to use pearls, precious enameling, and cameos in abundance. We can imagine how medieval ceremonials must have glowed and glittered with the breathtaking magnificence of these extravagant creations. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Lightly read hardcover w/dustjacket. Book looks like it has been flipped through a few times. Perhaps at worst, read once, very lightly. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly only lightly browsed(i.e. someone browsed through it a few times looking at pictures) However the front and back end papers(the first and last blank pages in the book) show very mild age tanning. Likewise the edges of the closed pages show very faint age tanning(visible only when the book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges) Gray cloth covers are clean, however the upper and lower open corners of the front cover show faint damp-staining- though there is NO evidence of damp damage anywhere else in the book) Dustacket is likewise very clean, but does evidence very edgewear, principally at the spine head which shows mild chipping. The bottom corner of the front inside flap of the dustjacket is clipped(to remove the manufacturer's suggested re

Antique medieval German or Swiss Landsknecht sword 14. century
A late medieval German or Swiss Landsknecht sword of massive proportions. 100% a authentic sword antique Landsknecht sword. Circa 1400 As used by German& Swiss mercenaries in the Middle Ages. Although Excavated in Europe many years ago it is in a very solid& stable condition. Heavy surface pitting throughout. The blade still has a distinctive edge& the steel/iron is in very good solid bright condition& could still easily be used with devastating efficiency. The grips have long rotted away. The upper hand grip would have likely been bound in leather only with the lower grip in leather bound wood. The wide cross guard is round This quillion would have been used to deflect& trap the opponent’s sword. The sword was found on a castle in south germany. The pommel is made of bronze with a very nice green patina. The quillion. ... moreThe cross guard. The pommel. That firm fit is still present to this day; nearly 500 years later. The sword is still solid with no looseness or movement. The sword is 75 cm long( 750 mm) This is certainly a tough rugged massive fighting sword& not the type of Landsknecht used for ceremonial purposes. You can feel its balance. Designed to be effective in battle without being too big& unwieldy, combined with a weight& balance not to wear out the swordsman too quickly. The sword is not cleaned. MEDIEVAL WAR SICKLE - 1524-25 GERMAN PEASANTS WAR, RIVER FIND , NO SWORD
UP FOR AUCTION IS A WONDERFUL MEDIEVAL WAR SICKLE. MOST PROBABLY FROM THE GERMAN PEASANTS' WAR, DATING BACK TO 1524-25. THE SICKLE WAS REPORTED TO BE FOUND NEAR THE IIIER RIVER, A TRIBUTARY OF THE DANUBE. THE IIIER RIVER IS LOCATED IN KEMPTEN, BAVARIA. ONE OF THE FIRST BATTLES WAS THE KEMPTEN INSURRECTION, WHERE THE PEASANTS REVOLTED AND THE IIIER RIVER DIVIDED THE FREE IMPERIAL CITY OF KEMPTEN AND KEMPTEN ABBEY. GIVEN THE TYPE OF WEAPON, THE TIME PERIOD, AND POSITION FOUND, IT MAKES SENSE TO HAVE BEEN FROM THIS WAR- NO OTHER EXPLANATION REALLY FITS. IRON HEAD IN EXCELLENT. MUSEUM QUALITY CONDITION. THE LONG HAFT IS BELIEVED TO BE ORIGINAL, AS THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF REPLACEMENT. THE SICKLE WOULD HAVE BEEN USED TO TRIP UP MOUNTED HORSE AND THEN GOUGE THE FALLEN RIDER. IT WAS ALSO SOMETIMES USED TO DISEMBOWEL THE ENEMY( the last scene ... morein the movie BRAVEHEART is a good example) WHEN WILLIAM WALLACE WAS LAID ON THE TABLE AFTER BEING HANGED BUT STILL ALIVE, THE COVER WAS TAKEN OFF THE TRAY OF"TOOLS" AND ONE ITEM OF TORTURE LOOKED MUCH LIKE THIS ONE. THE SICKLE SHAPED WEAPON WAS SUNK INTO HIS ABDOMEN AND FINISHED HIM. DIMENSIONS: 30.5" OR 770 mm IN TOTAL LENGTH HEAD w/o SHAFT: 11" OR 280 mm THIS WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION TO A MEDIEVAL COLLECTION. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PROVENANCE IS KNOWN! AUTHENTICITY FULLY GUARANTEED. PAYPAL ONLY FOR NON-U.S. BIDDERS BIDDERS WITH LESS THAN"10" FEEDBACK REVIEWS NEED TO CONTACT ME BEFORE BIDDING. GERMAN DAGGER - circa.1626 FROM THE THIRTY YEARS' WAR, POST MEDIEVAL, NO SWORD
A RARE GERMAN DAGGER FROM THE BATTLE OF DESSAU BRIDGE. OCCURRING ON APRIL 25, 1626. IT IS RARE DUE TO THE FACT THAT VERY FEW 400 YEAR-OLD WEAPONS HAVE THE PROVENANCE OF NOT ONLY THE WAR IT WAS USED IN, BUT ALSO THE SPECIFIC BATTLE. A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE WAS IN A SMALL GROUP THAT DETECTED IT. SINCE THE ONLY BATTLE THAT OCCURRED ON THE ELBE NEAR DESSAU WAS THAT BATTLE AND ALSO SINCE AN EXPERT DATED THE DAGGER TO THAT PERIOD, IT IS ALMOST CERTAINLY FROM THE BATTLE OF DESSAU BRIDGE. THE BATTLE OF DESSAU BRIDGE WAS A SIGNIFICANT BATTLE IN THE THIRTY YEARS' WAR BETWEEN DANISH PROTESTANTS AND THE IMPERIAL GERMAN CATHOLIC FORCES ON THE ELBE RIVER. OUTSIDE OF DESSAU, GERMANY IN 1626. THE IMPERIAL GERMAN FORCES OF ALBRECHT VON WALLENSTEIN HANDILY DEFEATED THE PROTESTANT FORCES OF ERNST VON MANSFIELD. ALMOST 6,000 SOLDIERS WERE KILLED IN THIS ONE ... moreDAY BATTLE! THE DAGGER IS ALL ORIGINAL. KEEPING THE WOODEN GRIP WITH THE SMALL TACKS. WOOD GRIP HAS A SMALL CHUNK MISSING ON ONE SIDE(see last pic) BUT EXPECTED FOR THE AGE. WOOD IS ALSO SPLIT ON BOTH SIDES, SHOWING THAT THE GRIP WAS MADE IN TWO HALVES. BLADE IS THIN, BUT VERY STABLE AND HAS A NICE PATINA. A RAISED MIDDLE GROOVE EXTENDS THE LENGTH OF THE BLADE. VERY NICE OVERALL. THE IRON GUARD CAP, BETWEEN THE BLADE AND THE WOOD GRIP, HAS PITTING. THE POMMEL LOOKS TO BE BRASS AND COULD BE A LATER ADDITION, ALTHOUGH I BELIEVE IT NOT TO BE. TOTAL LENGTH IS 11" OR 280 mm AND THE BLADE LENGTH IS 6" OR 150 mm. DAGGER HAS BEEN PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED. A GREAT DAGGER THAT WAS PROBABLY CONCEALED THAT DAY TO BE BROUGHT OUT AS A VICIOUS SECONDARY WEAPON. IT IS VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS DAGGER DID NOT SPILL BLOOD THAT DAY! A FANTASTIC PIECE TO ENHANCE ANY MEDIEVAL/ ARMS& ARMOUR COLLECTION. OFFERRED AT AN EXTREMELY LOW STARTING PRICE WITH NO RESERVE AND.FREE SHIPPING! PAYPAL ONLY FOR NON-U.S. BIDDERS. AUTHENTICITY FULLY GUARANTEED! A STATEMENT OF AUTHENTICITY WILL BE PROVIDED TO THE WINNER. SOME ADVICE(AGAIN) PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM" NO RETURN" ITEMS- THERE
