Earrings: From Antiquity to the Present by Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 224 pages. Publisher: Thames and ... moreHudson; 1990) ISBN: 0500014930. There is an inexplicable magic about earrings. Unmatched by any other kind of jewelry. Uniquely, they move with a life of their own, voluptuous yet pure, cold yet provocative. Earrings have been worn since prehistoric times; ancient civilizations offered earrings to their goddesses, and today they remain the most demanding and rewarding exercises of the jeweler's art. Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi, both experts from Sotheby's, are themselves under the spell of earrings, and their erudition does not disguise that this book is as much a romance as a fine piece of art-historical research. The authors relate how the fashion of wearing precious earrings spread from ancient Egypt to the Classical Greek and Roman worlds to Byzantium. Techniques in the cutting of gemstones and diamonds. Perfected in the eighteenth century, allowed earring design to evolve towards its most stylish and glamorous. Extraordinary and imaginative revivals of Classical and Roman motifs are here. The opulence of exquisitely crafted creations of gold and precious stones, the bold lines of Art Deco, and a rich proliferation of modern designs, from the most traditional to the most innovative, created by leading European and American designers. The book covers every period and style up to the present. The great names among designers and international jewelry houses; Cartier. Boucheron, Mellerio, Van Cleef& Arpels, Verdura, Andrew Grima, Merina B. David Webb, Harry Winston, Graff and Bulgari, are all represented in dazzling displays of precious and semi-precious earrings. Illustrations range from Rococo flowers and long, heavy girondoles thick with diamonds and emeralds to chaste Neoclassical disks and the delicate nodding sprays of the late nineteenth century. A wide-ranging study that will be a rich source of inspiration and delight for collectors,

DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 167 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Paul Hamlyn; 1966) When we see the range of marvelous objects produced by medieval goldsmiths. From brooches and belt clasps to crowns, chalices, reliquaries, and even altar frontals, we appreciate the multitude of skills they had at their fingertips. And when the author traces the various influences that contributed to medieval Europe through the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic periods, we begin to understand why the production of medieval goldsmiths was so prolific. The ingenuity of the craftsmen was limitless, and they did not hesitate to use pearls, precious enameling, and cameos in abundance. We can imagine how medieval ceremonials must have glowed and glittered with the breathtaking magnificence of these extravagant creations. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Lightly read hardcover w/dustjacket. Book looks like it has been flipped through a few times. Perhaps at worst, read once, very lightly. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly only lightly browsed(i.e. someone browsed through it a few times looking at pictures) However the front and back end papers(the first and last blank pages in the book) show very mild age tanning. Likewise the edges of the closed pages show very faint age tanning(visible only when the book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges) Gray cloth covers are clean, however the upper and lower open corners of the front cover show faint damp-staining- though there is NO evidence of damp damage anywhere else in the book) Dustacket is likewise very clean, but does evidence very edgewear, principally at the spine head which shows mild chipping. DESCRIPTION: HUGE hardcover in dustjacket w/magnificent color plates(199 pages) Metropolitan Museum of Art(1972) Composed in the tenth century by the poet Firdowsi. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Court artisans and craftsmen continued their work on the 759 folios for the better part of two decades. As a consequence, the book offers a fascinating mixture of artistic styles. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time. One commentator wrote then of Sultan Muhammad's page representing"The Court of Gayumars" the boldest painters hung their heads in shame before it" While that superb image. Reproduced within the book in color and gold, is called by Stuart Welch"perhaps the greatest painting in Iranian art: others of the pages he has selected for color reproduction and special comment are clearly in the same area of merit. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 7 1/4(U.S. Diameter: 19mm x 18 1/2mm(outer dimensions) 18mm x 17mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 12mm(height) 12mm(breadth) Fixed Width 2 1/2mm Band. Weight: 2.20 grams. CONDITION: Very Good! Completely intact. Moderately light wear evidenced consistent with ancient usage. Very faint porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A very well preserved silver ring circa 9th or 10th century A.D. As you can see. The ring is very handsome and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring bears a very distinct abstract design, however though we’ve scrutinized the engraved design carefully, we’re unable to determine what it represents. Some believe it to be the abstract representation of a shaman’s face. However it seems most likely to be the abstract representation of two stags with antlers locked in combat. Given the cultural popularity of such depictions in the region during the ancient and medieval world, this seems most likely. This is a fairly light weight ring, more like a contemporary ring than the thick and lumpy rings often produced during the early years of the Roman Empire. It is a very handsome and complex design, and probably was a very significant personal possession of whomsoever originally owned the ring. There are unmistakable indications that the ring was worn fairly often by whomsoever the ancient owner was. But the ring is in no way“worn out” Before expressing dismay over the fact that the ring evidences some wear, you must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer wit
